In talking to Basil today, I began thinking about performance issues with various gaming rigs. With Stalker it's difficult to have a "powerful rig" in a few aspects (although if you can get 80+ FPS on Crysis, I think your rig is WAY over to play Stalker in which case you can ignore this thread.) There's a few very basic ways to increase Stalker's overall performance that many people don't really even know about.
Tip 1: Uncheck the V-Sync box.
Reason: V-Sync is for games like Crysis where smoothness at the edges of the frames in important when turning or running. You need to have Anti-Alising enabled for this feature to even work and AA just hurts Stalker more than it helps. The X-Ray engine just does not play nicely with AA and V-Sync
Tip 2: Turn AA Off.
Reason: As stated above, Stalker doesn't play nicely with AA. You'll have to be sure to go into both your graphics card settings AND into your game's settings to turn this off completely. The game won't look as smooth, but it'll run MUCH faster.
Tip 3: Have at least 2gb of RAM.
Reason: Although the game states 4gb in the "recommended" settings, 2 is often more than enough on a fast computer. (I have two on mine as of this post and I don't get "out of memory" crashes.) Just be sure to limit what you're running in the background and save often!
Tip 4: Have at least a 512mb gfx card.
Reason: Stalker is very graphics intensive, you'll need a bigger card to let the game run freely. In this case, bigger is always better. I highly recommend SLI/Crossfire if you're going for more power. For some reason, nVidia cards seem to work better with Stalker than ATi ones do.
Tip 5: [When Running DX10 Mode on CS] Turn off God Rays, Volumetric Smoke, and Volumetric Fire.
Reason: The above things will REALLY slow your game down unless your rig is capable of running Crysis at full settings.
Footnote: Pseudo-God Rays and some bump-map tweaks are available for SoC by installing Sky4ce 2.0
Tip 6: Turn Grass Density down.
Reason: Less stuff on screen for the game to have to render/keep track of.
For any other tips you'd want to share, send a PM to this account-Afterburner-and I'll add them to this thread. Please, don't post anything in this thread.
