Rurik nodded "Chances are this was Seth's work, but without anything to back that up it could anyone with a high powered rifle, however this is definitely one of the men on that helicopter that was shot down." he paused, "It would seem these men chased something or put something into this pipe and caved it in, after that, someone didn't care for that and shot them." Rurik checked the man for papers or orders. Nothing he found interested him, "That vest he has is probably worth something." Rurik prodded it. "Chances are they didn't know anything we could use, the only one who knew anything shot himself." Rurik said as he stood up. "I've been ordered to stay here, but that will only aid Seth. As for Lutiy and Jurgen, they were here maybe 6 hours ago, they sold the gear they stole from my Sergent. They will be looking for Seth most likely, however I'm not sure Seth is aware that Lutiy is moving towards him. Which is interesting because I need Seth alive, and Vasily, who is in charge here normally. He must be interested in going north in an attempt to research unexplored areas." Rurik looked around, "As for where Seth is going, since he took mercenaries I'm assuming he wants an audience with whoever is in charge there. Maybe he plans to try and make it to the center of the zone." Rurik scoffed at the idea. "Let's look around a bit more, I've a feeling I've missed something, let's try over there by that old vehicle." Rurik and Victor walked over to it, someone had been here, shooting zombies most likely, upon closer inspection he found several foot print that lead in a running stride towards the pipe, Did someone run for the pipe and then get caught? he thought, walking back towards the pipe following the new prints, he guessed "Someone crept into the swamps, hid by that wreck, something spooked them and they ran to this pipe, either they were followed or they stumbled upon the soldiers?" But why would they seal the tunnel if they killed them? Unless whoever they chased put up more of a fight than they expecting. What can two stalker do against a squad of Spetsnaz that would make them retreat? He thought. "What do you think?" He asked Victor who was standing quietly looking over the swamps. Looking about Rurik decided to investigate the hill side from where the sniper had been hidden. Walking back and forth he found several casings. Looking down to where the army men had been ambushed. Foot prints leading towards the factory. Noting that Rurik continued searching, This must be Seth's doing, he sniped the military, and now their following him. And mercenaries, I need to know more about them. He thought as he walked back to the lab, something wasn't adding up in his head. Another message beeped on his PDA. There was no name, just a simple Freedom knows of your plans for the center, help is coming... Rurik was confused by the message again, had the whole zone gone mad? The General wanted to talk to Seth, Someone had broken into the armory, and this mystery message. Victor was looking around, walking over to him, "What have you found?" Rurik asked.

"Not much." Victor admitted. "I saw some pretty large footprints in the marsh by the lab. Very much alike to those of your own, but heading back there, and then out towards the factory. It looks like one of Seth's group is pretty big, and wears an exo as well. I found Jurgen's tracks as well, they're a bit smaller. Lutiy's still with him apparently. The tracks go all the way to the factory courtyard, but disappear there." The loner shifted about. Not a living soul was in sight. Apparently all stalkers, including those that the group was pursuing had left the area some time ago.
"Doesn't look like there's much left to find here. I don't know what's in that collapsed tunnel, but Seth would have to be a damn fool to hide in there for so long." The loner stated. A light fog was beginning to cloud the area, hiding the surface of the marsh from view.
"We'd better get back to the base before anything decides to go hunting in this fog. I'd hate to get stranded alone out here." The loner set off at a calm pace back towards the lab. "So lieutenant, what will be our further orders?" Victor asked, "Are we going even further north after Seth?"

Rurik looked at the factory, it seemed to be right way to go. "We'll get the others and move out, I'll need to inform Voronin, he has asked I hold this position, but chances are we'll lose any chances of finding Lutiy or Seth if we stay here." They were walking back to the lab as he spoke, it occurred to Rurik that we hadn't repaid the loners for their help. I'll do so once we're all assembled. He thought, "I'll call in a back up squad to follow us and hopefully they will be able to catch up, or at least secure this area properly." He said as they approached the door, it swung open immediately letting Victor in first. The group was lounging about on the bunks making up for the terrible sleep, nudging each in turn, "We'll be moving onwards into and through Red Forest, if any of you wish to pull out I understand, there's a reason why it isn't occupied by any faction for long, it's more dangerous than here easily. However I believe each of you have earned a reward for your efforts in assisting me." He gave each stalker 25,000 ru. Sending a quick message to Voronin Send hunting squad ahead to secure lab, I'm moving to RF to find Seth, will try to apprehend or contact him, someone has stolen information.
Rurik He decided not to wait for the help that was supposedly coming, instead writing a note and leaving hidden under one of the bunks. Gone north, contact me again with your name if you intend to help... He waited for the rest of the stalkers to leave the room before hiding it in a dark corner. Before standing and leaving the room. "Shall we?" He asked the group as they stood by the door shuffling restlessly. [GLOBAL CHECK]

Chaos rolled over in his sleep, find it very easy to rest in the comfortable bunks. He shifted again, a dark and frightening dream filling his mind. Awaking suddenly, he sat up and held a hand to forehead, staring at his knees. He saw everyone was looking at him and smiled weakly. "I'm... fine I guess..." he sighed, laying back, looking at the underside of the bunk above him.
What the hell was that...? the loner thought, closing his eyes and doing his best to remember the dream. He'd stepped off a bus in Warsaw, watching it drive away before heading down the street toward his parent's home. Suddenly, there was an earthquake accompanied by a deafening roar and... something that made his head feel like it was going to explode. Just as suddenly as it had come, it was gone.
All the dogs that had been barking at him had suddenly quit and an eerie silence hung in the air, the sky slowly brightening. He pulled his sunglasses from his pocket and put them on. He started running toward his home, the ground shaking again, almost knocking him to the ground. The sky began to change color from silver to blazing orange and red. The "exploding head" feeling returned with greater intensity and it began affecting his ability to run.
He fell to the ground, the grass around him going limp as the feeling intensified. Chaos cried out and felt something coming...
Hearing Rurik come in, he looked over at the mountain of a man and smiled, sitting up. "We're going to the Red Forest?" he asked, gladly accepting the money he was being given. "Isn't that... awfully.... close to the power plant?" he asked, remembering his history lessons as well browsing several websites before making his trip to The Zone. Admittedly, he was up for the adventure, but dying was exactly high on his to-do list.

The Red Forest...?
Maginot had heard of the place many years before the Zone came into being. A French TV crew working for France 5 had shot a short documentary on the areas around the CNPP, and had visited the Red Forest, so named because the tree's leaves had turned red when they had died en masse from radioactive fallout. Some of the trees in the forest had been mutated by radiation, growing in ways nature and evolution could never have achieved in such a short period of time...although now the place was probably home to things far more horrible than deformed trees and irradiated boars.
"I'll go, Lieutenant."
Maginot looked in surprise at Adder, who had stepped forward, her face still hidden by her suit's integral helmet. Adder did not particularly want to go to the Red Forest, but felt compelled to do so by a strong yearning, no, need, to go further towards the center. During her brief nap following her quick lunch with Maginot, the same dream she had had the night before had troubled her slumber...only this time, the power plant had spoken to her.
She couldn't really remember what it had said, but the whispering, hissing voice had been full of promise despite the strange, immanent horror that seemed to radiate from it. Adder had never been religious, but the feeling the voice had instilled in her was the closest thing she had ever had to a spiritual experience: total, utter devotion, an unbreakable desire to serve whatever it was that came to her in her dreams.
"-Well...if Adder wants to go, I'll go too", said Maginot heavily. He considered it his duty to watch over her, as she watched over him. If she wanted to go to such a dangerous place, he'd go too. He was getting more and more worried about Adder. Barely a few minutes ago, he had heard her mumble something in her sleep that sounded like "manalita", that and the shocking transformation her eyes had been through seemed to spell upcoming trouble for them both.

"I'm going." Victor announced "if Duty's sending a squad up there, they'll need a medic regardless. And I've got no qualms about it." Rurik and his forces seemed to be in pursuit of an adversary at least as powerful as themselves. It would be a disgrace to back down now, whatever threat the Red Forest posed.
Besides, the loner mused, stalkers had managed to pass through the area before, hadn't they? After all, hadn't many experts reached Pripyat in their own time? And with someone as experienced and capable as Rurik leading them, Victor concluded that the group had a reasonable chance to get themselves past the things that lurked in the dark woods.
"Hey lieutenant!" he shouted for Rurik's attention, pointing to the exoskeleton left by the mercenary. "Since the sergeant's been sent back to base, why don't we make use of this thing and give it to Harmund? He's a Dutier, and it looks like it could just fit, even though he's a few centimeters shorter than the sergeant and mercenary that wore it." the older Myrvang brother was much more heavily set and muscular to compensate, Victor thought. "unless your men object, we could put the machine gun to the same use. How about it?"

Turning towards Victor and Rurik, Harmund said, "What? An Exoskeleton?" Walking over to the heavy armored suit, Harmund picked it up. Walking into the bunk room, he put his stalker suit on a bunk and strapped himself into the massive suit. The suit was just a few centimeters too tall for him, but the small height difference between himself and the Sargent made no real difference. Pulling the gas mask over his face, he walked back out to the main part of the bunker. Picking up a steel rod, he turned and asked a scientist, "Do you need this?". "Testing out a new exoskeleton 'eh? Go ahead." the scientist replied. Holding the rod at both ends, he bent it effortlessly into a loop. "Jesus!" he muttered, discarding the bent rod, he picked up the PKM and looked it over. It was a clumsy and random weapon, but it would do.
Walking over to Sakharov, he put his Abakan and Stalker suit on the counter. "Looks like I won't be needing these anymore."

Rurik nodded to Victor's question, "I see no problems, the suit doesn't signify the Duty faction, and we may be able to use that to our advantage at some point later on." Rurik said, watching Harmund test the suits enhanced strength. "You'll find there are advantages and disadvantages to that suit, the biggest problem is the not being able to sprint, though it is most likely possible to change that." His PDA beeped again. Squad sent, investigating theft. Voronin. Rurik smiled to himself, the hunting squad would arrive within the day, though he was tempted to wait, Rurik decided it would be of no use. "Let's get moving we have a lot ground to cover and time isn't on our side." He said steeping outside, the others followed. The sun was quite high now, making it humid, walking towards the old factory Rurik felt a slight wave of unease amongst the group, despite the gas mask he could still smell the faint decay of death lingering. "Keep alert, the others Seth made it here just before the blowout and Lutiy just after, so there shouldn't be to many mutants around, just the occasional zombie." Pointing to his right a zombie was standing gazing into the unknown. Rurik ignored it, walking ahead as quietly as his suit allowed him. He had to find which way to go, "Spread out, search for anything of interest, but stay within sight of at least two people. We need to find a secret path." The group started searching the area.

The visor made a slight hiss as it sealed, drawing all air out and creating a temporary vacuum. Victor couldn't breathe for a second before the filters began to work, supplying fresh air. The entire place smelt unspeakably unnerving. It was the smell of death, of the many bodies now rotting here, as well as the dozens of stalkers that had met their ends at the factory in the past.
The loner took to the far right wall of the compound, keeping an eye on Chaos and Adder, who were traversing the area nearby. Something had changed about the woman, he thought, almost imperceptibly. Even though the air the SSP suits supplied was just as clean as the one his own SEVA did, the lack of reinforced framing made the bubble-like visor helm a real pain to keep on one's head. Adder had not taken hers off even when contaminant levels were low enough to breathe without a gas mask. Something was certainly off here, the medic reasoned.
In his musing, he had forgotten to search the area around him. He felt his foot trip on something round, and he fell bodily to the ground. "Holy shi-" he cried out as he fell sideways, his head coming to rest inches from a grenade. Well, ain't that convenient? Victor thought, reaching a hand out to pluck the explosive.
Then he noticed something; the grenade's pin was connected to a barely visible tripwire which stretched all the way across an opening in front of a large hole into the ground, covered by a hinged door. Someone had set up a trap for them to walk into.
"Guys!" he called "I think I've found it!" he yelled, waving over the rest of the team.

The old factory was even more sinister close up than it was from afar, and Maginot couldn't help but feel uneasy as the group, and his breathing accelerated, sounding hollow and unnatural behind his gas mask. Adder was completely quiet, simply following the group and not saying anything...which was unusual considering she always seemed to have sarcastic remarks in reserve.
The area inside the factory was deathly silent, with only the occasional, distant bubbling from a Fruit Punch anomaly up North or the croak of a crow overhead. A few rotting bodies dotted the ground around the factory's yard, and the stench of death was still present despite the gas mask's filter. Maginot shivered.
"Spread out, search for anything of interest, but stay within sight of at least two people. We need to find a secret path", said Rurik.
Maginot and Adder both went off looking for the "secret path", but didn't find anything of note except for a few more rotting corpses, three of which belonged to some snorks who had met an untimely end.
"-Ugly fuckers", said Maginot, kicking one of the rotting bodies, causing its arm to fall off and reveal maggots happily crawling in the decaying flesh. He felt like retching.
"-Haha, old Snorky certainly won't be waking up from his sleep", said Adder, completely unaffected by the ugly sight. Maginot was sure she was smiling behind that helmet of hers.
Adder was indeed smiling, but was also feeling slightly irritated by the way the helmet's visor distorted the outside world. She couldn't stop thinking about the strange voice in her dream...beckoning her to the center. It sounded so comforting and full of promise, yet was also as cold as the grave and seemed to crawl with unspeakable horror.
"-Guys! I think I've found it!", yelled someone who sounded like Victor, the group's medic.
"-Sounds like the Doc found the yellow brick road", said Adder.
The two loners went over to where Victor stood. They saw the small, barely visible trip wire in the tunnel's entrance.
"-Looks like whoevere went that way didn't want people to follow him without getting his legs blown off", said Maginot, his voice muffled by his gas mask.

[limegreen]No names, Chaos (although pretty much every oldfag knows Dimitroff's name)[/limegreen]
[Curiously enough, I forgot about it myself.]
Chaos had silently followed the group out of the bunker, more than willing to continue on despite being significantly under-geared for the expedition. A quick check of his PDA told him there would be plenty of time to examine the pair of stashes he'd located. The first was a small, seemingly missable box stashed in the open end of a pipe. Inside was a small oddly shaped artifact that he quickly deduced to be a Battery.
After sticking the odd artifact into his pack, he followed the group, listening to their banter and desperately trying to keep the smell of death and decay from overwhelming him. He finally resorted to pressing a handkerchief to his mouth and nose. As they neared the factory, he forced himself to keep his breakfast of tinned meat down as the number of half-snorks and mummified stalkers sharply increased. He decided to forgo raiding the stalker mummies, instead following Adder as the group split up.
They headed to the northern section of the factory, Adder's orange SSP-99 ecologist suit bringing a fair degree of amusement to the frightened loner. He knew better than to say anything to the female loner as he'd he'd seen her have a rather violent outburst in Rostok. Moving on, he stepped into an abandoned trailer, the location of the last stash in his PDA. After clicking on his torch, he looked around the trailer, closing his eyes and shaking his head as he raided a mummified stalker's backpack. Inside was several boxes of shells and in the stalker's cold, deathlike grip was a SPAS-12 shotgun.
After removing the weapon from the stalker's grip, he turned to leave, but something grabbed his ankle and made him trip. "What the hell...?" he asked, turning over and yelling in fright. "OH MY GOD!!!! ADDER HELP!!!!" he shouted. The stalker hadn't been as dead as he'd thought and was now attempting to dismember him. He fumbled for his handgun, but couldn't find and resorted to using the butt of his G36 to beat the creature about the head and shoulders.

"OH MY GOD!!! ADDER HELP!!!"
Adder and Maginot swung around at the sound of Chaos' voice. The loner was quite obviously in a nasty spot of trouble. Adder dashed off with her TOZ shotgun in hand, closely followed by Maginot. The two loners ran to the old trailer where they had least seen Chaos, and heard sounds of struggle coming from inside. Adder dashed into the trailer, almost tripping as she went through the door.
The trailer was very dark save for Chaos' head lamp whose beam was darting madly about as the Loner struggled on the floor. Had Adder's eyes been normal, she would have had to wait for them to get used to the obscurity or switch her own lamp on. Instead, she could see clearly in the trailer's darkened interior, and easily saw the zombie attacking Chaos with its bare hands.
Adder went calmly forth into the dark interior, cocking shotgun's barrel and loading two shells into them. She was vaguely aware of Maginot arriving behind her. She went over to to the zombie and pressed the barrels of her shotgun against its temple.
"-Eat lead and die...I guess", she said before unloading both barrels into the zombified meance's head, blowing its skull apart and splattering the floor with a nice, slick helping of gore.
Everything would have been fine had not the shotgun's annoying recoil made Adder's helmet fall back off her head, and things still would have been okay had Chaos not looked up at her, shining his light right into her face.
Maginot saw her eyes glow bright green with reflected light, the same way a cat did, before Adder hastily clawed for her helmet and shoved it back over her head.
"All right, I saved your testicles", she said, fiddling with her helmet, "time to get back to the tunnel Victor found."
Maginot stared at Adder as she left the trailer...her eyes had been glowing...
...and he was also rather concerned about Chaos having seen Adder's mutated eyes.

The deafening shotgun blast was a godsend as the zombie finally stopped trying to claw his leg off. He looked up at Adder, shining his torch into her bare face. He thought for a moment that he'd seen her eyes reflecting the light like a cat's, but attributed it to the adrenalin rush from the encounter with the zombie. He rolled onto his stomach and stood up, following the pair of loners out and toward the group gathering around Victor.
He knelt and carefully examined the tripwire once it was pointed out. It was a trap of the simplest kinds, hastily put together in an effort to stop careless loners. After carefully inspecting the wire to ensure it was simply a tripwire and not a closed circuit, he snipped the wire and collected the F-1 fragmentation grenade. He stuck it on his belt with the other two he'd gathered up and waited for further instruction from Rurik.
"Adder, you okay?" he asked, approaching her. "You didn't seem all that pleased you had to come rescue me," Chaos said, feeling a little foolish for getting ambushed by the zombie. He looked around, wary of the other mummified corpses in the area, wondering if they too were simply zombies playing possum.

"Adder, you okay? You didn't seem all that pleased you had to come rescue me."
Adder took her shotgun and quickly cocked it, reaching for two more shells. She was beginning to like the double barreled hunting rifle.
"-Oh I'm fine, Chaos", she answered cooly, "everything's cool."
She fed one shell into one of the gun's barrels.
"In fact, everything is absolutely ice-box."
She put another shell into the gun before snapping the barrels back into place with a swift, precise movement. She laughed to herself.
"Haha...ice-box..."
She slung the shotgun over her shoulder before turning to Chaos once more, her face nicely hidden by her suit's helmet.
"You shouldn't worry really. I seldom look pleased about anything...as a matter of fact, I'm pretty glad I was around to stop that zombie from ripping your leg off."

Rurik went over to where Victor was standing inspecting the wire, he smiled to himself it was a most fortunate thing that Victor had found this device rather. It would been a lethal blow to anyone in the group. "Let's leave it for now, there may be more and everyone should know what to look for." Rurik said, "Hopefully the rest of the group will be along shortly, I hate this place. It's such a shithole." he said while he waited. A cry from somewhere in the area pulled Rurik back to reality, "That sounds like Chaos." Jogging out to towards the noise he could see Maginot and Adder running over towards where Chaos was, a loud ringing shot echoed throughout the courtyard.
The 3 stalkers made their way over to where the rest of the group had assembled, "Having fun with one of the sleeping dead I see." Rurik mused slapping Chaos on the back in jest. "Now have a look at the tripwire, there may be more of these ahead, so keep an eye out for them."
Chaos snipped the wire and picked up the grenade, stepping past him to check the area Rurik spotted the hatch that had been used recently, it was rusted but moved fairly easily, looking into the dark tunnel he turned the NV on his suit on, it was quite wide within the tunnel. "I'll go in first, Maginot and Adder follow me, then Victor and Chaos. Harmund and Sigbrand make sure the hatch pulled back over when you come in. No point advertising where we're going." Climbing into the darkness he looked around quickly. It was silent, looking down the foot prints of several people moved into the darkness. At least I know where to go.
