Why don't they drill for it? I'm sure an automated drill can't be that hard to make, especially with the budget NASA has.

I think it might have cost them more money to launch a probe with an automated drill to the Moon. The design would have been more complex, more testing would have had to be done to see if the drill would work etc...crashing into the Moon and punching through its surface were probably easier and cheaper to do.

If everything goes right . . . both the US and RUS have a horrible track record with moon-projects completing successfully . . . even landing probes and such . . .

I thought they were crashing into it? If they some fuck that up it'll be damn funny.
