SoC is open. It's just not a good idea to explore some areas at the very start, CS restricting. I disagree with your claim that all the areas of SoC are accessible by The Marked One from the start. They are not. 1. the gate between Garbage and Rostok guarded by Duty. Closed until a specific part of the Agroprom docs mission is triggered. 2. the one-way gate between Dark Valley and Cordon. Is not opened by Sid until after the X18 docs mission is done. I agree though that for a rookie stalker there are definitely some areas that are best avoided until after gaining some experience and better weapons/armor. Jenifur Charne No, not entirelly. The gate between Garbage and the Bar can be opened - without mods, or having completeled the Agroprom documents task. There are a couple of ways to do so, but the usual trick is to either throw a spare weapon at the gate, or a grenade (sometimes simply shooting it works), and the gate will open. Now, once you've "forced" the gate and passed through, though, Duty turn enemy . . . which can make things interesting later on . . . But, there is a way to get past the gate, without forcing it open, nor having Duty turn enemy on you . . . it will take some serious thinking outside of the box, but it's definitely possible, and not all that hard, either. Digging through the Liquidator's threads over at GSC will turn up some info, if you need some hints . . . Regarding the DV gate, IIRC this one can be forced, too - as can nearly every locked door in SoC (even the door next to Arnie that leads into the "arena"). Thing is, these little tricks - and the way they were found out - comes from playing SoC completely different than how one would a typical FPS . . . your average player, who's never played STALKER before, would probably never figure them out; or merely happen upon them by accident.

Thanks for that info imperialreign. Only having been playing SoC for about 5 weeks, I had no idea of the possibility of the points you talked about. I'll definitely be finding the full info on those ideas and having a go at getting them to work in my game. Jenifur Charne

To clarify ImperialReign's rather vague hints, you simply need to escape the map's normal boundaries to go 'around' the map itself and get to the Rostok level changer. While I can't be quite certain concerning the points at which it is possible to do this at the Garbage, I figure you'll need more than one antirad, as the boundaries of this particular map are heavily irradiated.
I'm sure this is even easier to do with the Dark Valley level, as I'm there are probably a few areas where its fence can be 'jumped'.

Ah, got Carmageddon 2 to work again. The memories of my parents complaining about its levels of violence and the fun had slaughtering things makes me feel all fuzzy inside. I think the 1st time I played it I was 10 or less... lol.

DX has been a permanent fixture on my systems since getting a copy of it in late 2004. Since DX is an Unreal Engine 1 game, there's no need to reinstall it each time you do an OS reinstall, if you installed the game on a drive/partition other than the OS boot partition. Heh. Exactly what I do; games are on E:. And with the Deus Ex GOTY version (1.119fm? Compatible with TNM), you can edit the INI file to eliminate the requirement for the CD in the drive. It has survived quite a few OS re-installs. I play it through completely from the start about once a year. And I completely concur with you on The Nameless Mod -- very high quality, better voice acting in spots than the original, clever plotting (two game paths), good humor, great music. It deserves the 9.8 on ModDB. I'm looking forward to whatever OTP makes. Regarding the STALKER DV gate, part 2: There's a flaw in vanilla where you can push against the fence to the immediate left (east) of the gate and get the prompt to change levels back to the Cordon. But there are definitely some weaknesses in scripting to support the plot. I have heard folks completing the game without following the storyline at all -- and without going into the areas beyond the fences, AKA " The Twilight Zone". There is at least one "run fast" moment, and I think the weapon toss exploit was used to open at least one door, although you can still get several endings without that. P.S. jeniskunk (and others, if interested), you can edit your profile if you want your name CamelCased. I found that out after it forced my registration name to all lower case.

The Nameless Mod is the best Deus Ex mod, hands down. Although I suppose that ZODIAC and The Cassandra Project are also extremely great. The Nameless Mod was called the mod of the year by ModDB, by the way. STALKER is a great game, it's extremely flexible and you can play it how you like. My Dad's coworker had a looong conversation with me about it, and he's never even touched any mods for it out of the box. I pointed him to the old ZSG

Thanks for pointing that out - I remembered there was a way through without having completed X18, but it's been so long since I've been there I had slightly forgotten how it was done . . . Here, ran across this a while ago - shows how it can be done: www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rADP5plS54www.youtube.com/watch?v=18Ib35qd1fs&feature=related

About to install Torchlight. Hopefully it'll do a decent job of sating my Diablo 3 cravings for at least some time, even if it's cartoony as hell.

Torchlight ain't half bad. In fact, it's fun. And you could play it on a calculator, considering its specs.

Fuck yeah. And you get to use weapons like 'Fanged Fanggun'. I don't think even D2 had anything like that as far as name randomizations went...

Whaaat? You're talking about skirting map edges and exploiting bounding boxes like it wasn't the way to survive some of the old-school games. Before this "Playstation" junk. Wait. I just date myself? So, what am I playing? MUSHes, Twilight:2013 (sort of)... as far as graphical stuff? Valkyria Chronicles, still, always, forever. X-Force: Fight for Destiny, an open-source (if you can code in German) X-Com clone. Heavy Rain (OK, OK, teeeeechnically not yet) Stalker ShOC, of course. FreeCol, an open-source Sid Meier's Colonization clone. Commander-in-Chief: Geo-Political Simulator 2009 (way too buggy, I'm debating removing it) Spirited Heart (renai/dating sim from www.winterwolves.com/The Guild 2 (pretty much done with it) Sins of a Solar Empire (lame, the potential for an awesome theme/setting is there but they just hinted at it and left it as a way for Jr High boys to measure their weewees online) Dawn of Discovery (this, The Guild, what can I say, I grew up to Uncharted Waters and SimCity!) JAST USA Memorial Collection (more renai... don't judge me!! *^_^*) Princess Maker 2 (a bit more uh, wholesome, than the JAST collection) ... and maybe I'll get around to playing Mass Effect 1. I hear you can sorta kinda hit on your crew, yum...

Quick update: WTF Mass Effect! I can make a man with rough scars, but all the women have dainty little nicks covered up by thick foundation? No! Screw you, Bioware! WTF, SRSLY. My new mission is to scour the interwebs looking for a scar or eyepatch mod. Then get it for PC instead.

Currently playing thru ME2 as well. I think I'm becoming addicted to that game. Was kinda dissapointed with the customisations for the male character as well - wanted more options for, well, everything.
The game itself is kickarse.
Uninstalled BioShock 2 after about an hour's worth of gameplay though.

Was Bioshock 2 no good? Is it very similar to Bioshock 1?
