Hey everyone. My main computer is a bit old. To be exact I do have a:
Pentium IV 2.8 GHz 2 GB DDR-Ram Radeon X800 GTO with 256 MB
Well I know you might call me a technological caveman, but I still could play Shadow of Chernobyl acceptable fluid with it and also various Valve games like Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress 2. I bought Call of Prypjat one year ago and played it a bit. I noticed that the performance worsened horribly and also that I lacked of the time to play.
I orignally played Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl in static lightning but later was capable of patching it to dynamic lightning mode by manually rescaling all the important textures of the game. After all, the only performance problem were high detailled parallax maps for me. The dynamic lights worked with no performance problems. Clear Sky then was a disappointment for me. While the prequires were the same as for Shadow of Chernobyl, a lot of new effects were built into the game which were hardcoded in a way so I wasn't able to make the game running smooth and having it decent looking at the same time. Not even with selfmade patches. However I finished the game since I was interested into the story.
Anyways, since there are already half a dozen of patches out for Call of Prypjat I'm wondering if the performance increased with those and if I should give it a try again?
Else I would consider to wait one year again and get a better machine then.

Your computer should be able to 'run' it, but the video card is grossly inadequate to get any impressive effects out of the game, I'm afraid.
I have a GS9600-based rig with triple the graphics memory, and twice the RAM, and I still get considerable stutter with good weather on maxed out settings. On the other hand, it could just be that my vidya card tries to 'out-do' itself with it's overkill memory for the processing unit. I found the same to be true for CS on full dynamic lightning and God Rays as well.
The latest S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games are quickly becoming huge requirement hogs due to their terrible optimization. I've been told that I NEED a GT260 or above equivalent to max out CoP with acceptable performance levels. With S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 on the horizon, I doubt that it'll get any better.
Your best bet is just to get a superior system, IMO.
