"Oh", said Adder in a flat, tired voice as her captor told her he was simply a courier. "A grocery boy sent by clerks to collect the bill..."
She let herself be pushed forward. In other circumstances she might have tried escaping, but right now her spirit was broken. She walked docilely between the anomalies, barely registering the tingling feeling they gave her as she went past.
"I suppose you hate mutants too", she said after a while spent in silence. "I understand. Not that it matters now anyway. I didn't choose to be what I am now...but does that even matter either? No...no...it doesn't."
----------------------------------
"Well, you seem to be taking it in stride", said Maginot hoarsely. "When Adder's eyes took a turn for the inhuman she was quite a wreck."
Adder again. That's all he had on his mind now, even in the catastrophic failure of this Northern expedition. Ferret's announcement regarding his 'gift' didn't even surprise him that much. He was too tired to actually feel surprise.
"Well, use your gift if it can help us save her", he said, looking at Ferret with glassy eyes. "Well...she is the only thing we can still salvage from this fiasco."

Rurik swore under his breath, "What was he thinking?" Rurik muttered.
Picking up his pack he looked to the remaining 2 Dutiers, "I'll see if I can find him before we leave, and maybe stop him from getting himself killed."
"Sir, we'll accompany you, we can cover more area that way." One of the remaining soldiers said, the other nodded.
"Fine by me, we'll head in a north-easterly direction." Rurik instructed.
Walking in same general direction that Sigbrand and Adder had gone, the group could see a tall silo and a tall building overgrown with a thick creeper of some sort, standing out in the desolate landscape ahead of them, the sound of mutated dogs howling in the distance, and the sound of a pack of boars charging around stirring up other mutants.
"No signs of him or Adder. We'll go a little further maybe we'll, they can't be to far ahead." Rurik said checking the old map he'd carried since leaving Rostok. It indicated a wasteland beyond the factory.
With a sigh the trio pressed on, cautiously making their way around the old structure avoiding any unnecessary conflicts with the local fauna.

"All right lads", said a female voice, "we're closer to where Mag's PDA is beeping out. No idea where Adder's it though. I hope she's all right."
A blonde woman clad in a Wind of Freedom suit followed by several other Freedomers bearing the insignia of Penumbra were approaching the rusted chain link fence surrounding an enormous industrial building. The woman was Wasp, one of the oldest members of Penumbra. She had quickly assembled a few volunteers from Freedom's elite when she had received distressing messages from both Maginot and Adder. They had trekked through the Red Forest, fighting bloodsuckers and avoiding anomalies, and now they had arrived in Jupiter.
Wasp had never seen such an enormous building. The thing was a sprawling expanse of steel and concrete that blocked out the horizon with its sheer mass, and it spoke of past industrial might and glory. However, now it was completely abandoned, like the rest of the buildings in the Zone. Wasp cautiously approached the fence, looking around for any signs of mutants or other dangers. Seeing none, she climbed over the fence, followed by her fellow Penumbrans, and they carefully advanced through the decaying buildings of the factory complex.
A few growls indicated the presence of a pack of blind dogs. Thankfully, there weren't many, six in total, and after Wasp dispatched one with one clean shot from her Anaconda, the others quickly fled to the safety of the main factory building.

"I understand. Not that it matters now anyway. I didn't choose to be what I am now...but does that even matter either? No...no...it doesn't."
Sigbrand remained silent.
As the two continued onwards, the buildings of the damned city of Pripyat became visible. Trees and open fields began to give way to streets, dilapidated buildings and warehouses. As they walked into the city itself, Sigbrand occasionally caught glimpses of movement in high windows, silhouettes on roofs and flashes of lights reflecting off of optics. They were being watched, but the Monolithians weren't attacking. Monolithians at their posts looked at Sigbrand and Adder as they passed. None of them said anything and hardly moved as they watched them walk down Pripyat's streets.
When they reached the gate to the Stadium, they found it locked and guarded by two exoskeleton clad Monolithians. As they approached, the guards unlocked the gate and pushed it open. As the two walked into the stadium, the gate closed behind them.

The figure atop the rows of seating peered carefully through the scope of his rifle at the two intruders. Myrvang had come through, Sokol thought. The Monolithian twitched slightly from the pain in his shoulder. The bandit had wounded him only slightly, but the loss of the weighty handgun would be yet a bigger pain to work around.
It didn't matter, he thought. The Dutier had walked straight into his ploy, and had brought along the Freedom commandant along for the ride. It was almost too convenient. He took a look around, eying the figures amongst the rows of seats. The Monolithians were shifting almost uncomfortably.
It was time.
Sokol felt the energy of the Monolith surge through his body, the Power Plant merely a mile away. Focusing every ounce of his mind-bending power onto the taller figure that now stood in the center of the stadium, he spoke.
"Kill her."

Maginot started as his PDA beeped. He was surprised the damn thing was still working after everything he'd been through, so he fished it out of his pocket and looked at the screen. What he saw made his heart leap in a mixture of surprise and desperate hope.
"Ferret!", he said, nudging his comrade. "Reinforcements have arrived!"
Maginot quickly sent a voice message to Wasp and her men. "Wasp? Is that you? Maginot here, I'm with Ferret in some old container depot. A rogue Dutier took Adder North. Come quickly!"
Maginot pressed the "send" button and waited for an answer. Wasp and her men could be their only chance to save Adder.
--------------------------------
"Oh, oh, wait a sec. Got a message", said Wasp, grabbing her PDA. She listened to the voice message, recognising Maginot's voice. "Well damn. Our commandant got nabbed by Duty."
Wasp and the rest of her squad had left the Jupiter factory a few minutes ago and were now in front of some kind of checkpoint building that bore signs of recent occupation. Wasp sent a voice message back to Maginot.
"All right boss, time's probably running short, so my boys and I'll head North as fast as possible to try and get Adder back."
And with that, Wasp gave the order to move out. She and her squad ran off North, down the road that lead to Yanov. Before they reached the station, they bifurcated to the North-West, heading past an odd collection of old trailers and construction material as well as a huge crane-like device. When they reached the old factory they'd seen in the distance earlier, they were tired and panting heavily.
"I really fucking need to get an exo", panted Wasp. "Running long distances with a Guardian suit just doesn't cut it."
The Freedomers were, however, not out of trouble altogether. Their arrival was noticed by a pack of blind dogs, who, seeing an opportunity to get some easy meat, immediately attacked.
"Oh for fuck's sake!", shouted Wasp. She shot two dogs with her Protecta, the buckshot ripping their guts apart. "We can't stop! Go North!"
The Freedomers retreated beneath the factory building, all the while shooting at their canine aggressors. The blind dogs gave up after losing about six of their brethren, but the Freedomers still got bitten. Nursing her leg, Wasp swore between her teeth.
"Fucking mutts", she said. The Freedomers' attention was soon caught by three figures further North. Wasp grabbed her binoculars and observed them. They all wore Duty suits.
"The enemy!", she said. "We have to catch up with 'em!"
------------------------------
"Fancy coming back here, of all places", said Adder, casting a venomous glance at the assembled Monolithians. "So, you going to shoot me? Good. Just to put an end to your fucking around with my head. Hell, you couldn't even come and get me yourself, you had to send your little delivery boy here to collect the bill for you."
She spat on the ground. Some of her old defiance and sarcasm was returning.
"So go on, kill me. Finish it!", she said. "Protect whatever is hiding in your blasted old power plant and save the day!"

“It’s to late,” Ferret said his hope now gone, reality of the situation had broken him down, “ The Monolith freaks have her now, the team won’t make it in time.”
The expedition was a failure, and it had broken him down both physically and emotionally. He felt like he was falling apart at the seams and there was nothing that he or anyone one of the Freedomers could do about, this time around they would not be able to pull their commandant from the dark jaws fate. The Monolith had won; they might have stood a chance if it was not for those Duty goons. He would make they pay even if it cost him his life.
“Mag…I’m sorry,” he said, “they are going to kill her…I should have tired to stop him from taking her…I should have done something.”

The three Duty members were still jogging and occasionally breaking out into a run as the abandon city of Pripyat loomed into view. Where would Sigbrand head? Rurik thought, looking over the PDA's map of city.
"There isn't enough time to comb the city, we'll have to check the obvious places quickly" He said, "if only we had some idea where to start." He added in a mutter.
"Sir, what about the stadium, it's often discussed at the base that it would make a perfect place to defend if you were making a deal of some sort." One of the Sergeants suggested.
"We may as well head there, it's as likely a place as any I guess." Rurik said with a sigh.
Unknown to them that there was a Freedom squad also bearing down on them, the Dutiers pressed forward with caution carefully moving from building to building stopping near a small shop on the outskirts of the city.
"According to this map it's on the far side of the city, we'll have to stick to silent weapons from here on out." Rurik said attaching a silencer to the OC-14, the other stalkers had a VSS Vintorez and a AS Val. Checking that the suppressor was on tightly, he scanned the area looking for any signs of life, a glint of light from above and some distance ahead, near the top of an old apartment block, glancing through binoculars to where he thought he'd seen the light Rurik saw a Monolith troop standing idly looking down the street and back up, almost as if he was waiting for something.
“That isn't good, there's snipers on the top of those building, we'll never get to the stadium that way, there has to be another way.” Rurik muttered couching, while the other two scanned the nearby buildings.
One of the soldiers couched beside Rurik, “Sir, what if we used the drainage passages under the city?”
Looking to the man from where he was crouching, “That just might work.” He replied thinking it through, the sewers under Liminsk had been able to allow them unfettered travel and Pripyat was a much larger city. Looking around there was a manhole cover a couple of paces away, gripping one side firmly he hefted it open to the sound of creaking, rusted metal.
Climbing down after the other two Dutiers he pulled it shut with a snap unaware if their method of travel would be detected. With the cover in place the darkness was engulfing but with a click the headlamp was on as well as NV allowing limited vision in the dark, dank pipes.

A haze seemed to be lifted from Sigbrand's vision. Wait, what the fuck am I doing?! Sigbrand thought. Quickly regaining his composure Sigbrand glanced around the stadium as the Monolithians approached.
Three were walking towards Adder and himself, at least fifteen more positioned around the rows of seats and one more standing on the top row holding a sniper rifle. He was quite taller than the rest and was wearing a familiar looking brown trench coat over his armored suit.
As the Monolithians approached, Sigbrand ran through a mental list of possible ways to escape. An idea came to him, he remembered when Lutiy had shot a flash artifact, creating a blinding flash of light.
All I have is a moonlight. He thought, I hope it'll work.
When the three Monolithians reached them, the lead one drew his sidearm. "Hold on," Sigbrand said, "I'll do it." The Monolithian looked at him for a moment, then handed the pistol to Sigbrand. Cocking the .45 caliber Sig, Sigbrand whispered to Adder "Close your eyes."
Turning rapidly around, Sigbrand shot the Monolithian through the head and tossed his Moonlight into the air, shot the other two then averted his gaze and winced slightly as he fired at where he hoped the artifact would be.
The bullet smashed through the Moonlight and the stadium lit up with a blinding flash of blue and white light. Taking advantage of the momentary confusion, Sigbrand grabbed one of the dead Monolithian's AK-74s and shoved it at Adder. "RUN!" He shouted, "Head for the other side of the Stadium, I'll cover you!"

Adder blinked and stumbled. The flash had blinded her momentarily, and she had no idea where she was going. All she heard was the voice of the Dutier telling her to make a run for it. Why the sudden change of heart? She ignored the question and ran in what she thought was the opposite direction. She heard guns firing and shouts, and as she blindly ran, her sight began to return bit by bit. She tripped and almost lost her Kalachnikov.
She hoped that whatever the Dutier had in mind would work, although it seemed highly unlikely.

"So this is Pripyat", said Wasp in a hushed voice. The Penumbrans were drawing closer and closer to the town, and soon, they reached its suburbs. Empty, gloomy buildings surrounded them, their dark windows staring at them like black eyes. As they crouched behind an old container bin, Wasp and one of her comrades scanned the area with binoculars. She spotted several snipers hiding on top of strategically placed buildings.
"Hm, snipers", she said before putting her binoculars away. "Not very well hidden either, but still...if they spot us, they'll blow our heads off our shoulders."
She looked around, and her sharp eyes soon caught sight of an old, rusty manhole partly covered by an old vine and some dirt put there by rainwater. Wasp kneeled next to it and cleared the dirt and vines away with her hands before lifting the metallic cover up as quietly as possible. She flicked her headlight on and illuminated the large pipe below.
"Coast is clear, everyone in", she said. The Penumbrans went in one by one, carefully dropping down and switching on their NV goggles. Wasp was the last to go in, but as she swung her legs down onto the first rung of the ladder that went down into the drain pipe she heard familiar growls.
"Ah, fuck! Pseudodogs!", she hissed. Soon enough, three of the ugly beasts emerged from a bush and charged right towards her. The lead mutant leaped at her, but Wasp killed it with a deft shot from her trusty revolver before jumping down, shutting the manhole closed behind her and landing heavily on the curved concrete surface below. The pseudodogs clawed and bit at the manhole for a while before giving up and going in search of other prey. Wasp dusted herself off and turned on her night-vision.
The small group set off, none of them speaking and Wasp in the lead, her Protecta cradled in her arms and ready for use should anything nasty show up while they were down in the drainage system.

The occasional scurrying of rodents and the creaking of the pipes was all they Dutiers could hear, apart from their own footsteps, the layout of the tunnel system made it impossible to go directly to the stadium, instead having to crisscross the tunnels occasionally finding their path blocked by rubble where part of the tunnel had collapsed and have to take an alternate, and often longer path.
Once or twice the group thought they'd hear footsteps, or a voice echo in the darkness. Shaking his head to clear it, Rurik motioned for them to continue when the unmistakable growl of several snorks was heard, fractured light glinting off the mutants cracked lenses on it's old gas mask helped pinpoint it, raising his Groza and fired a burst, the silencer making a whisper of the shot but several loud, clear clicks echoed away into the labyrinth, the heavy rounds smashing through the creatures face and skidded off the round pipes ricocheting into the darkness, another growl came, lower more menacing. The snorks were pulling back having meet their match in the tunnels.
"We have to move faster, our scent was picked up, but that explains why this place isn't overflowing with rats and those rodents." Rurik said in a quiet murmur. "And I wouldn't be surprised if we had company down here."
Checking the map they set off in the direction of the stadium again, less than a kilometre from their target now, Rurik hoped there was a way of getting in that didn't involved blowing the gates off the hinges or some other noisy approach. Silence was the key here, with less than 500 metres, Rurik took a deep breath, soon they would be in for the fight of their life just minutes from now.

He should have known.
Sokol felt rage surge through him as he recovered from the blinding flash. The Monolith had erupted in anger. Yet, the vessel himself, at least the part of him that remained, felt that this outcome was almost to be expected. Honor would win over duty, he thought. Perhaps he himself had one been honorable.
The sky over the CNPP behind him flashed red as hundreds of mutants howled in the distance and the ground shook.
He hefted his sniper rifle, but the Dutier and Freedomer had both already leapt behind cover. Bullets riddled the concrete shielding the two stalkers on the other side of the stadium. Even with the momentary diversion, Sokol thought, they had no escape. Dozens of Monolithians were slowly encircling the two as even more pulled in from the streets of Pripyat itself. Looking behind him, Sokol could see reinforcements quickly making their way across the bridge in the distance; the Monolith was bringing more firepower to the fight. A rocket-propelled grenade slammed into the concrete wall of the stadium, throwing up chunks of stone and clouding the entrance onto the bleachers in thick dust.
"Surrender, Myrvang!" Sokol proclaimed, his voice laced and distorted by the Monolith's influence "You still have a chance to save yourself, at the expense of your own mortal enemy. Join me, and I'll grant you power you cannot imagine, the power she turned down!"
The sky flashed with lightning as heavy raindrops hit the ground. Several Monolithians in heavy armor entered the other side of the stadium, and even more stood guard near every exit, ready to shoot any living being that came out. Myrvang's time was running out, yet aside from the sound of the now pouring rain, the stadium was deadly quiet.

Crouched behind his cover, Sigbrand heard the monolithian's booming voice echo across the stadium. "Surrender, Myrvang! You still have a chance to save yourself, at the expense of your own mortal enemy. Join me, and I'll grant you power you cannot imagine, the power she turned down!"
Sigbrand remained silent for a moment, then said to Adder "Get ready for the fight of your life. All hell is about to break loose."
A moment later, Sigbrand shot up from behind the concrete block, took very quick aim at the monolithian and fired. The bullet whizzed within inches of the man's head. Within an instant, Sigbrand and Adder were immediately met with a hail of gunfire. The dutier and the freedomer returned fire whenever possible, but it soon became apparent that their situation was completely hopeless. Gripping his MP5 tightly, Sigbrand said "When I say go, I want you to get to that gate as quickly as possible. Stay low and don't stop moving."
"Go!" Sigbrand shouted, and stood up from behind their bullet ridden cover. As soon as he stood up, a bullet struck him in the chest. His armor slowed it slightly but he could almost hear the ribs crack underneath and saw the blood spurt from the wound.
Adrenaline filled his veins, and Sigbrand ran from cover to cover across the stadium's field. His suicidal rush successfully distracted the monolithians, who didn't seem to notice Adder. He felt another bullet strike him, then another. Just as he began to feel the strength leaving his body, a rocket from an RPG hit the ground a few yards from where he was standing. The explosion threw Sigbrand through the air and he landed on the ground with a thud, and did not move.

[POSTED FOR BASIL]
As soon as the Dutier shouted, Adder took off and ran as fast as her tired legs could manage. She didn't even think about what happened to the Dutier. A couple of isolated bullets slapped into the ground near her, but otherwise, the Monolithians' attention was entirely taken up by the young Dutier.
As Adder reached the square archway that lead out of the old stadium, she found herself practically face to face with two Monolith sentries who pointed their guns at her. Adder raised her hands in the air and half moaned half groaned in despair. Now she really was going to die.
However, the dreaded shots never came. There were two deafening detonations and the two sentries were sent sprawling onto the ground, their backs bloody and torn. Adder looked up from the two fresh corpses and saw two people wearing Freedom's colours. One of them carried a Protecta shotgun and a fancy revolver on her belt.
"Wasp!", gasped Adder before laughing crazily. "Of all people..."
Wasp didn't hang around to share Adder's apparent joy at being rescued. Instead, she dashed forth and grabbed her commandant's arm before dragging her back to the rusty manhole she and the Penumbra covert assault team had used to get to the surface.
"We can't go now...the Dutier, we have to help him!", said Adder, pointing back at the stadium. The gunfire seemed to have died down, which probably meant that the Dutier was dead, but nevertheless she did not want to just run away without at least trying to get him out of trouble.
"-It's too late, boss!", shouted Wasp. Bullets whizzed past them and cracked on the asphalt as Monolithians began to shoot at them. The Penumbrans covered Adder and Wasp, letting them get to safety within the city's underground drainage system before following after the two women. Bullets slammed into the manhole's cover, and several punched through the ageing metal, but thankfully, no harm was done.
By the time the Monolithians reached the old manhole, the Freedomers and their commandant had already vanished into the depths of the city's underground.

Stopping by the exit and giving his gear one last check Rurik gave a nod to the other two, it was sheer suicide what they were risking but it seemed better to try, rather than abandon Sigbrand to the Monolith.
"Ready?" Rurik asked, the two nodded and he climbed up opening the rusted hatch looking about, by luck they'd managed to get onto the far side of the stadium and emerged unnoticed, keeping low and sneaking through the unmanned gate Rurik could see that several troops were converging on one place halfway across the stadium. Pointing without saying a word, the Dutiers spread out keeping low and out of sight, without any sound five of the men converging on the area fell, with their heads imploding as the silent snipers fired from their positions, the last three ducking to avoid getting hit, Rurik however was circling around having spotted on of the snipers standing on top of a building near the stadium, firing at the man several rounds skittered on the ground near him, with one smashing into his foot, making him lose his balance and tumble off the building.
By this stage the enemy was aware that they were under attack, stopping and keeping low Rurik hoped that his men had noticed that the firing had stopped. Very soon the Monolith's whelps would begin checking the stadium for the three of them. Continuing to move would throw off being detected he hoped, keeping the silenced Tunder firmly gripped he made his way into the stadium's seating, chancing to glance over top of the concrete wall, several rounds shouts and accompanying rounds slammed into the wall sending chips of concrete and dusting into the air, moving along the aisle, looking back a couple of monolith troops had made their way to where Rurik had been crouched, one was hit by a barrage of fire from the other two Duty members, the other was taken down by Rurik lining up the man's head and firing.
Making a mental note of where the soldiers had been moving towards, Rurik estimated that he was the closest of the 3, continuing until he came to a section of the stand where there were steps leading down to the stadium's ground level. Taking several steps back Rurik threw himself between the gap, stopping with a start he looked back two more Monolith troops were following, but as he sighted them he fired upon them putting several holes in one of the members chest, followed by the very un-reassuring sound of an empty magazine, the second fanatic raised the MP5 he was carrying and fired, throwing himself back and dropping the Tunder in the process, several of the rounds hit Rurik in the chest, and stopped dead, the titanium plate did it's job well. Snatching the pistol from it's holster he fire two shots, one in the chest and one in the head, dropping the second fanatic instantly. Grabbing the dropped assault rifle and reloading in he continued to make his way towards the point he'd seen.
As he finally neared the point he was moving towards, he spied another fanatic firing blindly at one of the other Dutiers, with a single shot to the head, the man collapsed, the area had been scorched and had a large portion of the concrete missing and scattered debris littered the area. Continuing forward several of the fanatics that had been shot when the first entered the stadium lay strewn about the area, just beyond them was the them was collapsed shape of Sigbrand, there was a pool of blood on the ground beneath him. Staying low he made it to the the prone body of Sigbrand, he was laying face down. While he would of moved the young man, the firefight was still very much in full swing, but now Rurik could use the PKM instead, checking it over quickly he sighted a group running across the stadium, pointing the machine gun in their direction and fired a stream of lead at them cutting down most of the group.
One of the other Dutiers came from another direction, stopping by Sigbrand and checking him over and applying whatever assistance he could to the sergeant, "Where's Shapko?" Rurik asked while firing at another group before ducking.
"He's three aisles up and to the left." The Dutier replied nodding in the man's direction as he bandaged Sigbrand's injuries. Rurik nodded, loading a warhead into the RPG before laying it down and taking up firing on another unfortunate fanatic.
"We need an exit strategy, and quickly." Rurik said as he reloaded the PKM and continued firing, the blind firing having limited success against the advancing fanatics, “The tunnel we used to get here is on the other side of the stadium behind the small army down there. The front gates are the closest but are likely to be guarded.”
Several rounds smashed into the ground inches above the Dutier's heads. The situation was seeming more and more hopeless, surrounded, low on ammo, and an incapacitated comrade, peeking over the edge of the low wall Rurik spied the front gates, they were heavily guarded with most of the Monolith's forces moving there so as to block their chance of escape, while the CNPP side of the stadium was much more sparsely guarded.
“We should move for that entrance, it's has practically no guards.” Rurik shouted over the racket, before shooting two more fanatics that were making their way into the aisles with a hail of PKM fire. The other Dutier had made his way closer to the others, he had a graze on his left biceps, but was otherwise unharmed, the Dutier that had been tending Sigbrand conveyed the message to him, with a unison of nods the 3 began to back away from the main gates, firing on any fanatic that followed.
Rurik was holding the recoil heavy PKM in one hand while carefully moving Sigbrand, but the powerful suit coupled with the sheer will to survive along with the assistance of the other two Dutiers they make it to the exit and into the tunnels below the city.
((I hate posting things like this, it's tl;dr: Duty kicks arse and saves Sigbrand))
