Physical Description: Of average height and build, Ludmila has short blonde hair (cut à la Joan of Arc), clear green eyes and a piercing on her left eyebrow. She is usually seen wearing worn combat boots, a Wind of Freedom suit and, sometimes, a pair of aviator sunglasses.
Back Story: Nothing predisposed Ludmila for life in the Zone. In fact, she was the daughter of a rich Russian oligarch, shareholder in Gazprom and the owner of a huge estate outside Moscow. She was the man's second daughter, the offspring of his marriage with an American model. Ludmila, like her older brother and her older sister, lead a life of luxury, blissfully unaware of the world and its realities.
Ludmila was the archetype of a spoiled child as her father's wealth could buy her absolutely anything. However, things began to change when she discovered her father's affiliation with the ultra-nationalist movement. She was at university when she met a young Armenian, who was involved in several Left wing student movements. She became good friends with him, as his modest background was so different from her own. However, a few weeks after meeting him, he was beaten to death by militants of the ultra-nationalist party her father endorsed. Shocked by his death, Ludmila confronted her father, who seemed utterly unaffected by the young man's brutal death, and even praised his murderers for ridding the Motherland of such "sub-human filth".
Disgusted, shocked and confused, Ludmila ran away from home. During her flight from her family, she met two soldiers who had taken part in the Russian mission along the Zone's borders. The two men, being rather drunk, told her everything they had seen during their time in the Zone, and the tales they told fascinated Ludmila who had lead such a sheltered life until then. Ludmila was soon found and brought back to her family, but another idea was forming in her head: to flee the Russian Federation and enter the Zone, where she would be free of her father and this world she was starting to detest. She planned her escape meticulously, and finally gave her "captors" the slip (not before stealing her father's Colt Anaconda and some ammunition). She travelled through Western Russia, crossed the Ukrainian border, and finally ended up outside the Zone. Using money she had taken with her, she paid a smuggler to get her into the Zone.
She arrived at the Cordon at one in the morning, wearing just a pair of jeans, a leather jacket, walking boots, an old Soviet gas mask and armed only with her father's Colt and a switch-blade. Life in the Zone turned out to be very hard for her, but she refused to give up. After spending a few weeks in the Cordon, she left with a group of other more experienced stalkers who were going North. As she travelled North, she braved bandits, mutants and other stalkers before she and her companions finally reached Rostok. After spending a few days in and around Rostok, Ludmila decided to head North with another rookie stalker to look for artefacts. Their trip was a disaster however, as her partner was killed by a bloodsucker, leaving her alone. With little ammunition, food and water left, Ludmila was picked up by one of Freedom's patrols, and was taken back to their base, where she met Adder and Maginot, the former making a deep impression on her.
Freedom's ideals as well as its way of life quickly seduced Ludmila, and she joined the Anarchist faction. She later became one of Penumbra's first and most loyal members. She also honed her survival skills quite quickly, and her loyalty, energy and enthusiasm earned her the trust of Freedom's commandant, who gave Ludmila leadership of Penumbra's patrols after she returned from the disastrous expedition North. She earned the nickname "wasp" due to her aggressive and easily provoked nature.
