[limegreen]Although the 4A engine was good, I don't think S.T.A.L.K.E.R. would really run that well if based on it. 4A is more combat/stealth oriented with minimal emphasis on inventory functions. In my opinion, it would feel rather clumsy whilst running a non-linear game. Plus, 4A are GSC-defectives. GSC are developing a new engine, apparently similar to the existing X-Ray 1.6. On the other hand, detail rendering on 4A felt really good (even if all the models apparently had constipation, judging from their faces which were nearly all the fucking time) and the few levels on the outside were really awesome. Texture-work was grimy, filthy, raw and bleak - perfection. If this new S.T.A.L.K.E.R had more of an urban touch and, say, saw more linear scripting, 4A would be my first choice for it.[/limegreen]

The 4A on Metro looked pretty awesome on my computer. In fact I can't think of any other game (perhaps call of duty) with that amount of detail to run so smooth (it was always in the 30-60 fps range on my computer, running with dx 9, with staggering detail). My problem with it was ... I never liked the outside levels... for me everything that was indoors looked awesome but as soon as i stepped outside (the framerate would drop obviously) and everything looked kind of unnatural. But now if I think of it, thats not really a problem that would be transfered to another game with the same engine; its just the engine not the whole deal. Also too many NPC's in a confined space would make the framerate to go pretty low. And about what you said Bentley, I don't think that it can't be modified to suit to a more rpg-oriented game with inventory functions; I don't see why it should be a problem.
Anyways that Nikolsky guy already said "...with the new engine we are building for the game..." so they are probably upgrading the x-ray. I just hope they keep the static - dynamic lightning option in the graphics settings. In my opinion that option alone made the engine great. If you had a rubbish pc you just played on static -the game looked good enough and it was running smooth. If you had a better machine you just turned on dynamic lightning and everything looked 10x better... so you could play it on almost every pc unlike other games where setting everything on low doesn't really help. It somehow reminds me of Half-Life 2 with Source that was one of the best engines ever; that game looked good and it was playable on every toaster. I also hope they put a lot of work in the optimization part. The worst thing that could happen is to end up with a game like GTA4 or Cryostasis, the sort of games that don't really run on anything, not because the graphics are awesome (which are not) but because the engine is terrible. Let's wait and hope for the best.

www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/10/08/permanent-internet-access-for-stalker-2/Can anyone tell me what the hell these fuckers are doing ? It just sounds to me like they are doing a mess. I'm not in any position to judge game developing, but to me it sounds like a bad idea... There is also a link on that page, to an interview with GSC's studio director, but it's russian ... Dim maybe you can translate if they have other shitty ideas. Also the article is older, but I couldn't find any discussions on the topic around here. P.S. Sorry i didn't post in a while, I had so much stuff to do lately...

Not sure what going to happen but it seems like GSC is getting pretty worried about pirates. But I would not worry too much until GSC makes an official statement on their site about the game. I've done some hunting and so far can not find the source about the DRM, save for this kp.ua/Default.aspx?page_id=2&date=220711&news_id=291887&p=1 I can't read it so Dim will be of more help So far all we know is there is going to be a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 and it will be out some time in 2012. The rest we will just have to wait to find out.

Lots of irrelevant stuff concerning the books, merchandise, etc. I jotted down some of the more important notes. - NPCs will talk in languages other than Russian. (i.e. ohgodnoukranianbullshit
- The game engine will be distributed for free, apparently.
- GSC is active on military forums for the most complete and accurate reproduction of firearms in-game.
- Some bullshit about touring the Zone in real life.
- Kinostalker is apparently an independent and unrelated production to GSC.
- Apparently a full-length movie production is in order after the rumored series, and it WILL be about Strelok. The movie will be released at the same time as the game.
- Havok technology has been licensed for use in the new engine.
- Dodgy answers to the voice acting queries.
- Multiplayer may or may not be cut from the final release.
- No need to beta test STALKER 2 because all beta tests do is promote popularity. Because the games don't have a history of being buggy at all, so why bother!?
- Around 60 people currently working on the project.
- Official STALKER 2 site will be unveiled approximately 6 months before release of the game. Same goes for concept art, etc.
- Possible 3D support.
- Duke-Nukemesque "IT'LL BE DONE WHEN IT'S READY, AND WHEN THE MOVIE IS"
- STALKER 2 will be a trilogy, like the first part.
- The game will require a constant internet connection, and content will have be downloaded directly from the main server as the game progresses as a means to fight piracy.

Can't say that list is filling me with much hope... Seriously considering getting it on Xbawks instead of PC to avoid the constant connectivity.
The fact they are making a movie as well... Certainly not jumping for joy there either.

pfffffaaahahaahaa nice one Dim. Love the sarcasm. Are they really ditching beta testing? Why do they have such bad ideas? When the game comes out should I expect something worse than CS when it was released ? Also the movie... if that's not a marketing strategy for promoting the game than I don't know what is. Anyway thanks for summing up Dim. For me, the best candidate for the worst idea i've ever heard is still the constant internet connection concept. I hope this information is wrong, or they just consider rethinking it... what if i want to play singleplayer and my internet connection is down ? What if THEIR SERVER is down when i want to play, and the required downloads don't work? Every game developer faces piracy, and they should just live with it instead of resorting to any stupid ideas. The game will be pirated anyways.

Chances are like all games it will be cracked eventually, but I do hope they rethink that one.
Maybe it's me, but does distributing the game engine while talking about anti piracy seem a little ironic?

It's geared towards the Russian consumer base, so the end product we get may be different after all based on the wants of US and Euro Stalker players, but idk. I'm kind of looking forward to the movie, but at this point it all is starting to seem a bit gimmicky. Also, if they're going to cut multiplayer play (if it even comes out decent), I don't see why I should get a single player game that requires a constant internet connection.

Possibly cancelled, sure hope it isn't. Though details have been vague, the news report is in Russian so a translation would be nice.

*deep breath* A poster from Ukraine posted a thread on Krautchan's /int/ board with a lot of concept art for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. He claimed that he was fired and that GSC is closing down. Bernd responded with "loltroll", as usual, only to come upon a horrifying revelation when a moderator posted a picture which clearly pinpointed the IP of the OP to GSC. Everything fell quiet for a moment whilst Bernd looked for other sources. A couple of Ukrainian articles on various news sites stated that GSC had indeed been closed down by its founder and director Sergey Grigorovich. A menacing message from an employee of GSC's rival company, 4A Games also supported this claim with a post on some forum, albeit without any sources to back himself up. Not long had passed before the OSFB and OST pages were literally crapflooded with thousands of posts asking the PR guy for GSC (Joe Mullen A.K.A. JoeWillBurn A.K.A. Sasha) whether the whole thing is true. Some Russian bloke, apparently the director of Mail.ru (hilariously mistaken for Sergey Grigorovich by several mainstream gaming media websites) also stated that GSC was closing down and that it was being shut down "for Sergey's personal reasons". Joe soon responded with something in the vein of " I don't know what the hell is going on." 4chan's /v/, 420chan's /vg/ and Krautchan's /int/ were/are full of different speculation threads about why GSC may have closed down. All of a sudden, Joe comes in on Twitter and says: "Everything is fine, don't worry, GSC is not closing down, Stalker 2 is still indev." A burden off our chest? Nope. Ten minutes pass or so and Joe deletes his post. Shitstorms and crapfloods ensue, random wild guesses and troll threads arise - what is happening? All the time, GSC is bizarrely quiet about this - not a single word - on the forums, even. And then comes in what to some may be the final drop for some - Joe posts the following message on his personal Twitter: " Retweet this, I'm looking for a new job." There are various theories as to why exactly GSC is/is not shutting down. I'll list them here in order of ridicule (from a personal POW). Ukrainian mafia involvement - murky rumors from different Russkie/Ukrainian posters claim that Grigorovich wasn't exactly on the friendly side with the underground. He had often been visited by several unknown people [citation fuckin' needed], often believed to be members of the Mafia. Reeks of bullshit.Ukrainian government involvement - apparently Ukraine wasn't too happy with the way their soldiers were being portrayed and/or wanted in on the deal. Sadly for them, the IP for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is apparently registered outside Ukraine [citation still fuckin' needed] and thus the government have no right to it. Thing is - S.T.A.L.K.E.R. may as well be one of Ukraine's top exports - ShoC and CoP sales have exceeded 4 million copies or so. Reeks of bullshit. Piracy theories seem to be coming exclusively from imageboards and are usually posted by trolls. Following examples of other games (and subsequently studios) "ruined" by piracy (such as CD Projekt's Witcher 2, for whom the number of pirated copies is apparently 4 times larger than the amount of sold copies, which is still a large amount considering Witcher 2 had sold around 1 million copies), they claim that Sergey shut the studios down because they had low income and that the employees weren't paid. Considering Sergey had bought himself a Ferrari with a customised "Stalker" licence-plate, not mentioning the fact that game sales have exceeded 4 million copies, this one is probably bullshit. However, this theory may supplement the publisher deal (depending on your POW on piracy and whether it really affects game sales). Likely bullshit. Aforementioned developer CD Projekt pulled a PR stunt during website transfer for GoG (Good old Games) announcing they had disbanded and halted further production on their game. This may also be the case for this studio, as there was no foreword to this sudden shutdown - it came out of the blue. Unsourced claims murmur about GSC buying a new studio to transfer to. However, recently discovered evidence seems to be against this theory (notably the fact that Joe announced he was looking for a new job). Every single member of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. community is hoping for this one, as it will be feel good mens. A bad publisher deal seems to be the most realistic and, sadly the most likely cause of GSC's shutdown. As we all know, the majority of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games were sold on the predominantly PC-oriented Eastern market (think Second-world countries). GSC was apparently having problems with their publishers for all three games [citations needed for this one, fuckwits], with all of the publishers believing for some BIZARRE FUCKING REASON that a story-driven shooter isn't really a thing for both PC and console markets. Apparently, GSC couldn't publish the other game by themselves, so they fucked about with coding for a year or so before finally announcing that they couldn't do it. Considering how retarded publishers are (think Ubisoft), this one seems very plausible to myself. There are plenty of other theories which are just far too unsourced/unlikely to happen/blatantly stupid (for example, Sergey Grigorovich's mother, the Iron Lady of GSC who actually controls everything). The last official update came from Joe on Facebook who told us to wait for Monday when all ought to be explained. He doesn't seem to be troubled much by this, happily exclaiming on his Twitter account that kangaroos have 3 vaginas... among similar statments. I'll keep you up-to-date, if you want. In any case even if it gets closed, I sent an e-mail to Gaben asking him to pool in the monthly income from the Hat. Co store and buy GSC, all its subsidiaries and all of the people who were at one point in time employed at GSC. Even if it takes him 10 years (in Valve Time!) to release it. *exhale* Read more hereBurdo Bordo

to sum it up in as few words as possible... the ONLY thing we know for sure is that there will be some sort of comment made on monday, 12/12. as stated on twitter.com/gscstalker . the main GSC game world site, either russian or english, has no definite info regarding all this, just tons of speculation in the forums. well, less then 24hours left till monday, we should know something within the next 2 days. going somewhat offtopic, i just watched that 3part interview that was discussed earlier in this thread. the owner didnt seem unhappy, didnt sound like there was any serious problems with S2. im not sure how old that interview is, so things could've changed since then. personally i doubt that they had trouble getting a publisher, theyre a pretty well established(were?) development company, they've shown that their games could sell, as said in previous post the 3stalker games out now sold over 4mil copies. and lets be real, a good publisher, running a serious promo campaign, S2 could've easily outsold the previous 3games combined. so i doubt that was the reason for closing gsc. even if they couldn't get a publisher for s2, they have other things going on too, stalker isnt their only product. anyway, this is all soap bubbles until we hear something from an official source, so cross your fingers, hold your breath, pray, do whatever it is that you do. hopefully s2 is still on.

I now feel bad about that last thing I posted
"Our website will continue, with the forum & tech support. The shop will continue until the nearest planned items sell out. This includes knit-hats (uploaded now) as well as the pants (coming soon)" - Joe of GSC.
The future is glum.
