Awake, my child.
Owen slowly regained consciousness, coughing up a mixture of irradiated water and blood.
The hour of your death is not yet upon you, arise.
Owen clearly heard the deep booming voice in his head, and had no choice but to obey..The voice seemed so, powerfull, stern and yet almost kind. What good would it do him to resist it? He pushing himself up, and stood there on the bank of the river shaking with cold, exhaustion, and blood loss.
Walk up the bank a ways, towards my voice. There you will find the body of a stalker long dead, use what equipment he had to staunch your bleeding and steady yourself.
Owen walked up the bank. Just around a bend from where he had been, he saw the corpse of a man in a regular stalker suit. Rummaging through the dead man's pack, there he found a medkit, and a few cans of food along with a knife and an old TT-33 pistol. After bandaging up his wounds, he ate the food and then swallowed a few antirads for good measure.
Take these weapons, and make your way north, towards the tips of the towers. I have a task for you here.
Looking up, towards the north, Owen could see the tips of antennae sticking up from the mutated trees. Limping towards them, he noticed how quiet the forest was. Besides the echoing sounds of gunfire and explosions from the Dead City, nothing seemed to be active in the forest. A slight breeze blew through, rustling the leafless branches of the trees, it gave the forest almost a serene feeling, almost. Eventually, Owen came within sight of a large concrete building, by the looks of it, the facility was just behind the antennae he had seen earlier.
That is your destination, tarry no longer, go! boomed the voice, and of course, Owen obeyed.
The former monolith base was deserted, skeletons littered the area and spent shells were scattered everywhere.
This was the site of a great battle against the craven invaders, said the voice, Go inside of the building, you will find a staircase leading to a vault, follow it.
Walking into the building, Owen saw the staircase right away, and started down it. He soon found himself in an underground lab, it seemed to stretch onwards before him into oblivion. A small light in the distance caught his attention and he started walking through it, passing through several chambers until he came to a large one, with an elevated grate catwalk. In a corner of the room, crouching over a decaying corpse, was an old bloodsucker. The black skin of his prime had faded to gray, and he seemed feeble and thin.
He is too old to cause you harm, simply pass by him. He will not attack.
Owen kept walking, the old bloodsucker staring at him the whole time. He passed into a room with two large concrete pillars both of which had consoles built into them. A catwalk lead around to them. Following the walkway, he stopped between the two pillars.
Look to your right, child.
Owen looked.
Do you see the lever?
"Yes." mumbled Owen, barely coherent.
Push it upwards, and your task will be complete.
Owen pushed the lever. He could hear machines rumbling to life, and shaking from even farther below him. He felt a sudden force pushing on his mind, his vision began to go yellow and he began to loose consciousness.
Your task is complete, now you shall ascend. You will be immortal to your brethren. Come, join me in paradise.
Owen slumped to the ground, his vision faded, he could feel his heart slowing..
Come.
And so passed Owen, in service to the monolith.
