The guns immediately rose again, as the Tourettes-ridden captain waltzed into the midst of the nearly pacified squad. Rurik looked as if he was perfectly willing and capable to reach out, pluck the ex-soldier, and tear his head off his shoulders, and Sokol was surprisingly nearly in the same mind.
"You hypocrite." he seethed suddenly. "Your evacuation missions work pretty damn well when you pull out your own men and shoot half the rest." he said, recalling Seth's tale of how the Captain first arrived in Yantar, chasing down and trapping Karc and Falchion in the sewers, and then shooting an innocent scientist. "All for what? Finding people like me and eliminating them?" he smiled grimly "Well, here I am, alone romping around with you for the past couple of days. Now that master Sethy's gone, who's stopping you? Of course, the mercs aren't going to do shit once you shoot one of their associates that has been ferrying arms to them for the past year." The Freedomer shouldered his AW50, turning away.
"Maybe whatever it was you've seen in the North fucked your mind to the point of no return, but this can't be the Freedom leader I've heard all those stories about. How can you be a leader, when all you are is a blind follower of spiteful ideals of every sort? Dimitri," he said over his back "keep going on like this, and you'll burn every single one of the few bridges you have left. After all, how are stalkers supposed to know which half of the military choppers are there to gun them down, and which half is out to rescue them?" He walked away, having made his long suppressed disgust apparent.
He turned back to Rurik and his group, two of whom had suddenly left. "You've been tailing us for the past few days, and have killed quite a few people in your way at that. Now, I know nearly as much about why we're going North as you do." he glanced about. "The only person that seems to know is Seth himself, and he's gone for whatever reason. Two groups followed him North. One being a notorious ex-Freedom bandit and an accompanying stalker, and another squad, clad in all black, apparently stolen, goods. If you're searching for him, I'll join your squad, since I seem to be alone in wanting to help out the man that has saved the hides of a good many people here, and I won't last alone in Pripyat." he looked down in defeat "but only on the condition that no harm befalls either of us on your part once he's found."
NOT FREEDOM LEADER, one of the people who followed him to Pripyat. And I thought I didn't read the posts thoroughly.

"Yes! Exactly! Who amongst you would shoot me? The mercenaries have just received a lifetime's worth of information about the army! And who gave them that? Me! You think this'd go unnoticed?"
His features got darker
"The Yantar incident? . I kindly asked both of them to come out of their hiding spot, unarmed, on condition that they would come out unharmed and leave afterward! I'm not interested in what some random looter's garbage picking life looks like, I only wanted information on the scientists! And still, they shoot my men first! What would you do, 'freedomer', if I just pulled out a weapon in your base and started randomly shooting your friends? We try to leave, and another one of your lot halves us in the swamps!"
He gripped his VAL
"The scientist? You would not understand what horrors I might have done while I was serving Him. If you saw a friend of yours nearly dying from gangrene in the middle of nowhere, would you rather kill him to end his misery or leave him in agony? And yet, when you raise your gun, someone else approaches who might want to see him agonized. Do you think I'm a retard? I never intended to kill the scientist, you disrespectful turd."
He approached Sokol, clearly raging. The mercenaries raised their weapons, unsure who to shoot
"You can question my being as much as you want. Clearly, you Freedom members are more about smoking shit rather than fighting for the Zone. You want to know what does a medical helicopter look like? There's a really big red cross on the sides. Now, either you're blind and extremely lucky, or you're an ape with Down syndrome if you shoot down that one. They stop for every man, no matter if his uniform's green, red, black or blue. I don't care what the FUCK you have against the army, you do not shoot a medical helicopter unless you've really got evil intentions. Do you really know if there's one of your men on that same helicopter?"
The man's features twisted. Truly, it looked like he was possessed. His voice was growling
"You think I'm a follower of ideals? A mindless sheep in the flock? Who stopped me from murdering you in your sleep, when I had the right chance to do so? Several times? Ideals. Ideals I had, the ideals not to hurt one of my own. The ideals not to betray myself and those around me! And here you are, prancing about with 'him', calling out your leader's name. I joined Freedom because I supported my leader, who had his ideals and beliefs, and wanted them to come true. I supported those ideals myself, because I had those ideals too."
He seemed to have stepped out of his trance. He lowered his weapon.
"If this is what Freedom is...If this is what Freedom has become...May you all burn in hell."

The two loners made their way through the pipe, keeping conversation down to a minimum and being generally quiet. After a while, they arrived at the end of the pipe, which went updars to a rusted metal grill half covered with dead leaves. Maginot pushed the grill up and emerged into a small avenue in Limansk. It seemed to have been relatively spared by the vicious fighting, if the empty bullet cases, blasted car and a couple of buildings gutted by fire counted as "relative".
Maginot scanned the area with his binoculars as Adder came out of the pipe and rubbed dirt and dead leaves off her now rather grimy and battered orange suit.
"Coast seems clear...I see no Monolithians in the area", said Maginot, "let's move."
Adder and Maginot walked along the old tarmac road that wound between the few buildings in the area. They were on a small elevation on the Western side of Pripyat, and they could clearly see most of the town up ahead. They moved Northward quickly, meeting no mercenaries or Monolithians until they got to a relatively large building that seemed right next to the river's bank.
As they approched said building, they saw two mercenaries standing guard in the middle of the road. Adder shifted uncomfortably.
"Don't worry", said Maginot, "I'll handle this."
The pair approached the mercs, Maginot in front.
"-Halt! Where are you two going?", said one of the mercenaries, pointing his gun at the two loners. "-We're going North, merc", said Maginot. "-Sorry mate, but we aren't letting anyone past the river. We don't want any possible Monolith sympathisers going North to swell their ranks, so scram."
Maginot sighed heavily. This would be very inconvenient. Suddenly, he saw Adder raise her Vintorez and to his horror, pull the trigger. The two mercs were unable to react quickly enough as Adder's attack came out of the blue and with almost inhuman swiftness.
One merc got two bullets in his chest and fell down backwards, gasping, while the other one got shot in the neck and head, killing him instantly.
"-We had to get through somehow", said Adder flatly. "-Maybe not the best idea considering their buddies are going to come after us, RUN!"
The two loners sprinted past the large building block as three more mercenaries emerged, guns at the ready. A few bullets whizzed past the running loners, and Maginot couldn't help but remark that if the mercenaries had taken less of a battering, they would have had enough men to effectively gun him and Adder down in the blink of an eye.
They came to a bridge that had collapsed long ago and an old car lay rusting in the radioactive waters below. Jumping across was out of the question as a large whirligig anomaly hovered there.
"Damn! There should be another bridge up North! Come on!", said Maginot, dashing off along the river bank. The mercenaries were behind them, shooting and shouting, and a bullet grazed Adder's cheek. The two loners jumped over a battered old barbed wire fence and continued Northwards. They soon came to the Northern bridge across the river, but the path was blocked not by mercenaries, but by Monolith soldiers, five in number.
"Merde!", swore Maginot. The Monolithians had spotted them and were now getting ready to shoot. Maginot grabbed his newly acquired SG 550 rifle and shot at a Monolithian who was about to take cover behind a half collapsed wall of sand bags. The Monolithian fell, several bullets having slammed through his chest armour and into his heart.
Bullets flew as Adder took cover behind a tree and began picking off the enemy with her Vintorez. Maginot took cover in a doorway nearby, bullets ricocheting off the concrete walls and smashing through the glass panelled doors. Adder killed two fanatics with shots to the head, and Maginot shot another one down just before he was able to toss a grenade. Finally, they managed to exterminate the zealots, and they headed onwards towards the bridge. Maginot saw that the mercenaries had rallied three more men and were giving chase, intent on avenging the deaths of their comrades.
"-This is the game of death" said Adder as they ran, "we make one false step and we both lose." "-Couldn't have put it better", panted Maginot.
They reached the bridge, and to their consternation saw it had been blown up during the fighting. Their consternation alleviated slightly when they saw the Monolith's troops had made a crude bridge over the water by pushing a truck and a car into the river.
A bullet slammed into the ground next to Maginot, and the French stalker turned round to face the incoming mercenaries. He raised his rifle and fired at them, missing them but forcing them to seek cover.
"-Let's go!", said Adder, jumping onto the truck and scrambling across the makeshift bridge. They got across unscathed, barely avoiding getting shot down by their pursuers. As they got onto the Northern bank, they began to head in a North-Westerly direction.
As they approached a nearby building, they heard someone shout "heretics!", followed by several concealed Monolith soldiers opening fire on them. The two loners were lucky they didn't get mown down by the salvo, and they quickly saw the way North-West was blocked.
"Where to now?", said Adder as they both ran from the murderous fanatics, "we can't go that way because it's teeming with fanatics, and we can't go back because the mercenaries will be waiting for us."
Maginot was not sure where they could go now, but a strange distortion in the air caught his attention. The two loners stopped and looked at the strange phenomena nearby. A building had collapsed, or rather, half of it had "vanished" under the combined action of four, bubble shaped anomalies. The things distorted the air, but did not produce the same sound as gravitational anomalies.
"-What are these things?", said Adder, as they drew closer. "-I think they're spacial anomalies or something...I heard they can teleport you to another location."
The two loners looked at each other.
"-You aren't seriously thinking of jumping into one of these, eh?", asked Adder, "they could really crush us into powder for all we know." "-We're kind of stuck", said Maginot, "we can't really go North as there are probably more Monolithians there, and the South is blocked by the mercs...so, why not?"
He took a step towards the nearest anomaly and looked back at Adder, who was looking at him with a mixture of apprehension and incredulity. Maginot took a deep breath, and jumpd into the anomaly...
...it happened very fast. He never noticed any kind of change around him, it was like jumping through a hole in a wall. He opened his eyes and saw he was lying in a pile of rubble in a middle of a clearing.
The anomalies had transported entire sections of the building into another location...amazing. He looked at his PDA and saw he was somewhere North of Limansk, in the Red Forest. His plan had worked!
He heard a dull thud behind him and turned around to see Adder lying flat on her face. She stood up with a scowl, brushing dirt off her suit and looking around her.
"-Well, Frenchie, looks like your idea worked...where the hell are we? Out in the sticks?" "-In a way", said Maginot, tapping his PDA, "we're North of Limansk, in the Red Forest." "-Haha, oh wow...from one charming place to another. Fucking A." "-We should get some rest before continuing", said Maginot, sitting down on a pile of rubble and taking some bread, his camping stove and tinned beans out of his backpack.
Adder set down in front of Maginot as he set up the small, blue stove and set the beans on it. The two stalkers sat in silence as the tin's contents began to bubble ans steam and Maginot stirred them idly with his Leatherman's blade. Once the beans were ready, they helped themselves to its contents.
"-The trip through the forest is going to be hard", said Adder suddenly. Maginot looked up at her, chewing on a mouthful of bread and beans. "-Probably, but we made some very good and very fortuitous progress...hell, we might be ahead of Lutiy." "-I don't think Lutiy is that slow", said Adder, "he's as swift and as dodgy as an eel."
The sky was getting darker as they spoke, and they decided to make camp for the night, with Maginot getting first watch.

Rurik looked at the Freedomer, shaking his head, "Unfortunately my friend this isn't Seth, it Sokol, one of the Alpha Wolves, why he isn't with Seth however is something I'd quite like to know." he said to Victor.
Sokol aimed his gun at Rurik's head, Victor and Sigbrand both pointing their guns at him, looking around he saw every mercenary had their gun trained on his group, "My business is tracking Seth and finding out what he did at Yantar. Maybe you could fill me in on what he was doing there. As for Lutiy my only interest in him is the bounty on his head. Allow me to introduce my group" motioning toward Victor "This is Victor Yurievich, he has training the medical areas, a valuable member for any party venturing into the zone, and to my left is Sergent Sigbrand Myrvang. And these two, a Adder and Maginot." As he introduced then Maginot said "Sorry Rurik, but Adder and I have decided not to continue this dangerous trip. We'll be returning to the Bar. I thank you for helping us, and farewell." It pained Rurik to lose two more members, at least they weren't dead and they had gained experience, "Farewell friends, thank you for your help."
Looking at the approaching military stalkers, "I see you found Captain Dimitri, a fine man for the most part." he muttered to Sokol, observing him the mens uniforms, They have no insignia Rurik thought as drew near. Looking at Dimitri as the man accused him, "Flying a military helicopter near the Duty HQ was your pilots doing, we've warned you before. And since when did Spetsnaz save rookies?" Looking as Sokol and Dimitri "You gave these mercenaries classified information, civilian Baranov?" Rurik asked the ex-captain stormed off muttering.
Turning to Sokol who offered to join them, "I have an order to not harm Seth, I'll extend it to cover you as well should we come across any rouge Duty members roaming about up north. I'll accept for offer." Rurik said while he thought, "Lutiy was with Khan was he not? I confronted them on the out skirts of the city, as for that other party, what can you tell me about them, if it's the group I'm thinking of then we should try to find them, they'll hinder our progress, thinking we're also hunting Lutiy. But first I'd like to do some work on this suit and maybe grab a better shooter too." Rurik said before walking towards the merc technician and trader.

Following Rurik to the mechanic, Sigbrand put his STALKER suit on the counter. "Put everything you can on it." Then, he placed his MP5 and Mosin on the counter as well, "I'll have these modified a bit as well.

Time to get a bit of a makeover where weapons are concerned, Victor thought. His old AS VAL rifle had served him well for the duration of his trip, but the abilities of the mercenary mechanics, as well as the guns he had acquired, were too good to pass up.
He quickly made a stop by the mercenary weapons trader, examining the man's massive inventory. Without much thought, he removed the scope from his VAL and sold the rifle. Having deprived himself of an extra load, he continued over to the mechanic. Handing him the VSS and the HPSA, he ordered every single possible upgrade the man could perform. The upgraded guns would have much less in the way of recoil, would be lighter and more accurate, and the HPSA would be able to fire in full auto. After receiving back his modified weaponry, Victor walked back to where Rurik and the rest of the group were gathering.
"I suppose if we are to catch up with those two, we'd better move out?" he suggested.

Karc was searching the dead Monolith troops these bastards aren't worth the effort he thought pocketing another 50ru, all he had found on the dead so far was 750ru and one F1 grenade, when Burner appeared saying Karc jumped jumped up ready to fire "Calm down, and drop that dead...whatever he is. HQ's calling again. Time to earn our paychecks!"he said.
"Paycheck you say? Alrighty what has the boss got planned for us?" He asked walking beside Burner. Burner outlined what he'd been told "Search-and-destroy, that sounds like fun, what any ideas what we're looking for?" As they walked Karc caught glimpse of the of Rurik, "Who the fuck is that guy?" Karc exclaimed as they passed. Karc followed Burner into a quiet building where Anatoli was waiting for them, he beckoned Burner and Karc to follow him into a quiet office. "Alright boys I got a job for you."
Karc finds 750ru 1x F1 grenade
Rurik nodded to Victor as he approached saying "I suppose if we are to catch up with those two, we'd better move out?" Responding, "Yes, we'd better move, I think we've over stayed our welcome." Looking over to where Sokol was leaning against the wall, "Sokol, you ready to go?" he asked the Freedom member. Hopefully we'll find some answers now Rurik thought to himself as they began to head north.
Before they had left the base they came across two freshly killed merc corpses. "What happened here?" Rurik asked the merc who was standing guard. "Two stalkers were heading north, they were ordered to turn back, but seems they didn't like that order, one of em shot two of our boys and legged it." Maginot and Adder Rurik thought responding, "Well we're heading north too, is that going to be a problem?" The merc shook his head, "I'm not getting shot stopping you lot. If you find those two stalkers let us know."
"Will do." Rurik said as they moved away from the base.

"I'll be quick. Thanks to the information Dimitri gave us, we've found out that the army's hauling in UAVs all over the sector. The control for the UAV is mobile and protected , so this mess is, as far as I'm concerned, a few APCs and two trucks. Now, we definitely don't need the army looking around, so we've made a little deal with the local traders. They get us a few explosives, you two go and put them to good use. Now, you might ask why'd I pick you two instead of a fully equipped demolitions team. Simply put, the whole thing is in the middle of the Agroprom military base, and, sending in a demo team would be suicide. Two men are enough for this. I suggest you do the thing at night, between the hours of two and five, while the base is dead asleep. Also, try to find in a different way into the base, as going through the front gate will probably get you screwed, to say the least. If you want, I can issue you with a few suppressors and NV.
You will go from here to the 100 Rads in Rostok. Don't tell anyone about what you're doing, not even the mercenaries in the base. The barkeep should direct you to his associate who'll hand over the explosives. After you get the explosives, head to Agroprom and wait for nightfall. Head into the base, keep the casualties minimal as you approach. Once you plant the explosives, head to a safe distance and detonate them. Have a back-up plan in case something goes wrong. You'll lose contact with the base after you enter the Garbage. You can consult with the barkeep if you need anything. Now, get. Dismissed."
They saluted and left through to the armory.
"Oh man...I never thought it'd be like this. Two suppressors and a pair of NVG for me."

Karc followed Burner to the armory, "I've already got NV, but I'll take a couple of them silencers since ya offering them." He said being given two he attached them to his Colt and P-90. "These'll do nicely thanks." Nodding to Burner indicating that he was ready to move out.
"We'll take one of the secret paths that me and Torch took it's a long winding path but it fairly safe," Karc said tapping the blade that hung by his side, "And no one ever uses it. It'll take use right to Yantar, once there we can move to the Bar, meet up with the barkeep. I'll get us there just keep an eye out for the odd dog."
The two proceeded to Yantar, passing through without stopping. Making their way through the WT. "I could of sworn there was a building there before." Karc said point at the pile of rubble. They reached the northern barricade where they were stopped by the Duty guards. "What do you two want?"
Karc and Burner were at least a few inches taller than the tallest guard in the group, Karc poked his head into the guards face, "We're here to see the barkeep sunshine, now step aside. He's expecting us." The guard stepped back, radioing the barkeep. "Alright, go on through but stay out of the the Duty base and you'll be fine." He warned them.
The two mercs made their way to the Bar, Burner talked to the barkeep, he was given to bulky backpacks, Karc took on of them, adjusting his pack.

Sokol's PDA beeped. He quickly read the message Katya had sent him from the Freedom HQ, his face quickly turning gray. He shut off the device, placing it in his pocket, and turned to Rurik.
"Expedition's been cancelled," he told the man gravely "I just got word from the base, Seth's dead. Two stalkers came in from the North, carrying his gear, and knowledge of info they'd have never known existed without his telling them. One of them had a French accent, while the other was a woman, with some form of mutation causing slitted, reptilian eyes." he paused for a moment, letting the significance of the words sink in to the Duty lieutenant. "If I remember correctly, your group had two such members, until they ran off some time ago. Apparently, they're heads of the faction now."
He paused, before looking back towards the crossing by the river. "I need to get back to base to figure out what all of this means." he said. "There's one problem. I've been told someone reactivated some kind of psy-emitter installation deep in the Red Forest. Now, I have no idea how those two got past, but its clear we won't without proper gear."
He looked around "Not a single man in this base can properly fabricate and install psy-protection systems. Solely the eggheads are experts at that trade. So we're in a dilemma like no other. We simply cannot get past the irradiated part of the Red Forest."
Victor listened to the Freedomer's speech before speaking up himself. "I had a full psy-protection system installed in my suit before we left Yantar," he informed the group "I suppose I could get into and shut down this emitter, provided someone tells me how to do it."
The Freedomer and loner both looked questioningly at Rurik and Sigbrand. As much as Sokol may not have liked working together with his foes, there was little choice in the matter between cooperating, or being brain-scorched. "So that's our way out," he mused "provided this medic guy doesn't get himself killed on the way in. What do you say, Lieutenant?"

Rurik nearly vomited, "There's no point going north anymore, this will make General Voronin displeased." He muttered, "Maginot and Adder are in charge of Freedom you say? That is something I wasn't expecting. Does it say how he died?" Rurik paused thinking about what to do next, with Seth dead, he had no need to linger but the Brain Scorcher was blocking their path.
Sokol turned to Rurik "So that's our way out," he mused "provided this medic guy doesn't get himself killed on the way in. What do you say, Lieutenant?" he asked. "Victor grab anything you think you'll need from the armory, I'll cover it. From a report I read, to deactivate the device in Red Forest, you'll need to make your way into the lab there, X10 I believe. Having never seen it, I can only tell you that controls for it a deep underground somewhere. Monolith fanatics will probably all over the place."
"From the report it says that the room you'll be looking for has two larger boilers, or something of that shape, they need to be shut down via control panels near them, once you've done that, get out of there, chances are the Monolith will storm the lab looking for you. The scientists at Yantar have the best knowledge of it. Either way good luck." Rurik said "We'll be awaiting your return."

Victor looked back at the ruined city as Rurik gave the order to move out. Smoke rose from the charred wreckage of buildings and streets as the mercenaries milled about, salvaging their remains. The Duty squad made their way to the bridge not having completed their objective, their pursued target dead. Sokol trailed near the rear of the group, quiet and self-absorbed. The mercenaries at the gate, who had helped them fight their way through the city let them through without a word. The warning meter on the panel of Victor's suit began to beep, signaling that they were approaching the psy-field. The loner held up a hand to stop Rurik and his team, turning the alarm off. "I'm going on alone." he informed them "with any luck, I'll be able to deactivate the machine and get you guys through." The loner stepped forward in the direction of the five large antennae visible in the distance. He felt the coils in his helmet slowly warm as the emissions were reduced in intensity. Nevertheless, the medic's vision slowly turned a yellowish hue. He walked on through the forest depths, wary of any threats. None of the Monolithians had managed to make their way past the mercenaries' defences, but he did not wish to run into any mutants lurking about. Luckily enough, all of the local creatures seemed to have been driven off by the machine's activation, and Victor made his way to the compound unscathed. The five antennae loomed before him, the resonating cables discharging electric shocks as the current ebbed through them. Victor felt his hearing slowly fade, every single step he took down the gravel path seemed to be muffled. Nevertheless, he stepped through the doorway into the building and descended down the staircase into its depths. [time warp through Scorcher Thread]Sokol leaned back on the bridge railing and began to wait. The loner had disappeared into the Forest. Hopefully, the man would actually make it into the emitter complex. The Freedomer didn't particularly savor being stuck in the ravaged city while some squad of eggheads managed to get together to deactivate the machine. The rest of the squad was quiet, and the Dutiers seemed to be more or less disinterested in him. Soon enough however, the signal came. The loner medic had managed to turn off the Brain Scorcher, alone, without succumbing to its effects. Sokol smiled as the group moved forward into the Forest, their progress no longer hampered. After some time of silent walking, the remains finally came upon the tunnel leading to Yantar. As promised, Victor was already there. After congratulating the loner, the Duty Lieutenant turned to Sokol, surprisingly amiable, and said "I can escort you through Rostok if you'd wish or would you rather take the longer way through the eastern side of Red Forest? Which ever you choose, look after your new boss, he's a good man." The Dutier climbed down into the tunnel, waiting for the rest of the squad to catch up. Sokol stayed, giving the offer a solid dose of thought. "It's all right." he said finally "I'll find my way back. We've driven the Monolithians from this place, at least temporarily." he added "It closer to get to the Warehouses directly from the Forest than going all the way around anyway." giving a final wave of goodbye to the squad, the Freedomer checked the map and compass on his PDA, and walked off towards the southeast. It was time to find out who was the new man in charge, and what the hell had happened up to him and Seth in Pripyat.
