With no father, conversation the group became to walk to the freedom base. Night had fallen and the rain had not stopped. The rookie had taken the mercenary’s advice grudgingly, as he made sure his PDA was off.
The cold rainy evening and Ferret’s lack of sleep made the Freedom HQ look even more inviting to him. He almost forgot that this place could be his grave if this assassination did not go right.
They entreated the compounded with out much trouble from the guards, mainly because of Schwarz and his documents. However it soon became clear that the new leader and his commandant where not present at the base.

Schwarz looked at the smallish stalker, "I didn't know she had that, shall we say skill. Thank you that little piece of info." He said looking to Meph who had replied about the surprise attack. "Indeed they won't be expecting it. I take it Duty didn't hire you as well?"
Walking in the dark wasn't so bad but the rain was, holding the Bren gun as they moved quickly to the main entrance, the guard waved them over causally standing in the small checkpoint building they huddled in. "What are you lot doing out here in this weather?" An exoskeleton clad Freedomer asked looking the group over.
"Looking for the commandant or the the leader. We have information for their eyes only." Schwarz replied showing the guard one of his many forged papers. The guard skimmed over it and handed it back. "Well I'm sure they'll very interested to see those papers but they aren't here, gone off towards the radar, gonna take down the scorcher for good. You could leave them with Katya if you'd like?" The guard said.
Pretending to ponder the decision Schwarz shook his head, "No these a for the the leaders eyes only, and I'd rather not risk leaving them laying around for anyone else to look at by chance." he said. "I think we'll try and catch up with them, they can't be that far ahead, right?" He said asking the guard who shook his head.
"If you move quickly you'll catch up with them." He said pointing in the direction of the barrier. Schwarz looked to Meph and the others, "You right to continue?" He asked.

After listening to the military stalker's advice, Maginot turned to Adder.
"Do we help them?"
"-Well, considering the fact those Monolithians are in our way and that there are, well, lots of them, maybe it would be a good idea", answered Adder with her usual sarcasm. Said sarcasm bounced off Maginot however; he was used to Adder's venom.
The group moved into position behind some boulders, Penumbra leading the way, and were quickly mobilised and ready to fire at the Monolithians stationed in the base up ahead. A base that seemed to have been some old industrial installation in the past.
"We're in position, lieutenant, give us the signal to let the lead fly", said Maginot through his radio.
------------------------------------------
The motley band of bandits and murderers set off down the road at a fast pace, heading towards the Barrier. Balalaïka soon found herself walking by Meph's side.
"So, Mr Matrix", she said. She was already beginning to struggle to keep up with Ferret and the mercenary, whose longer legs made them move faster. "Where did you learn to swing those blades about like that?"

The rookie Bandit walked briskly towards the barrier, he wanted to get there soon as he wished not to meet up with any more hunger Bloodsucker. He over herd at the Freedom base that the abandoned village that was across the road from the small farmstead were had camped was a Bloodsucker breeding ground. The village was appropriately named Bloodsucker village, and most stalkers would go kilometers out of their way just to avoid the mutant infested ruins. As the group reached the barrier the night sky finally cleared and the moon light up the hilly area that was the Army Warehouses.

"So, Mr. Matrix, where did you learn to swing those blades about like that?" Balalaika had caught up to Meph, and was now walking rather quickly to keep alongside him.
"Daycare," he answered the woman absentmindedly, his eyes still staring steadily ahead at the fortified hillocks before them as the group made their way towards the Freedom Barrier, but his mind strayed back to the blades at his sides, back before he had left his country.
He remembered playing mock swordfights with his friends with sticks, one side the Koreans, one side the Americans. His friends were always the Americans, as they always lost, seemingly no matter how many they were against him alone. He never put this strange inborn ability to waste. He remembered searching the scrapyards and dumps for hours for the two perfect pieces of scrapped chrome steel, ones that did not break or bend immediately when he smashed them with a heavy rock or hammer. Finally, he gave the two pieces, slightly over a foot long each to his grandfather. He kept practicing with shorter blades in the interim, butcher knives and long kitchen cleavers. At last, he had received the blades from his elder. The two pieces of bolstered steel were sharpened at both sides to a point that seemed to vanish. The tops were slanted slightly, and sharpened as well. The blades sliced through virtually everything, even small trees, and were well-balanced for throwing. He was, at last, sated.
Eventually, he turned his interests to other fields as he grew up. He learned of countries outside his own, as well as their languages, until he finally decided to run away. His gift had never left him, and he took the two blades with him, two of the few things he had brought along. He had kept them sharpened ever since.
"And what will ye all be, exactly?" a tall, moustached Freedomer was standing before them, examining the four stalkers inquisitively. Meph hadn't noticed they had made their way to the Barrier while he was entranced in his thoughts.

"And what will ye all be, exactly?" a tall, moustached Freedomer was standing before them, examining the four stalkers inquisitively.
"A traveling quartet of sopranos looking for our backing band." Schwarz answered sarcastically from under his mask. "We're looking for your bosses, we got something for their eyes only. Is that a problem?" He asked.
"No that's not a problem, but seriously who are you?" The Freedomer pressed again with his question, sighing Schwarz clicked on his head mounted torch and showed the man the documents showing him just long enough to see the official stamps and signatures. "We're working for the Mercenaries and that's all you need to know."
The man inspected the group before shrugging and waving them on, "Good luck out there, the forest is crawling with Monolith and mutants."
"Good, more thing to shoot." Schwarz muttered before walking towards the barricade, the sounds of the gravitational anomalies made quiet shuddering sound, scooping up a handful of cracked pavement he scattered the pieces around to find a clear path. "Follow my steps, you learn quickly in the zone as my team did, we walked right into an anomaly that shredded our gear, leaving us with cheap back up gear." Walking at a pace that everyone could match Schwarz looked down before taking a second look.
"Is that a hand holding the neck of a bottle?" He said to the group before adding quietly, "Maybe it was one of those bandits from before." He mused.
On the other side of the forest, Rusty and Rodent had been trudging along when Gravel put his fist up, ahead was a sizable group of monolith troops moving towards them, "Shit, move now." He said picking Rodent up and slinging him over his shoulder moving quickly to hide before the group had converged on them. "Behind these pylons, Hammer take half and wait for them to pass, once their past, we'll rip them to shreds. As for you two, get moving quietly that way stay in the shadows, those suits will blend nicely."
Gravel let Rodent down Rusty had his arm supporting Rodent. "Our chances of against these guys aren't great but they need to be stopped. Go." He said turning to direct his men.
Rusty and Rodent moved silently through the quiet night stopping as the troop of fanatics went past. He looked back watching the violent trap several grenades exploded at once sending the monolith soldiers everywhere, it was followed fierce firing of shotguns, Gravels group had thinned the ranks but outnumbered and had lost their advantage, moving back and regrouping. They were getting overpowered by the monolith force, Gravel turned seeing Rusty. "RUN YOU MORON, RUN FOR YOUR FU..." He was cut off by an explosion which scattered his men.
Rusty ran with Rodent not risking a look back. His PDA beeped several times, Shit more of the bastards, I'll take a few of them this time. He thought, laying Rodent down, he checked his Styer before saying to Rodent, "We're trapped, maybe they'll forget about you if I make enough of a fuss." He placed the RPG, SVD and his pack down, before jogging quickly towards the oncoming group unaware of their intentions or even who it was. Looking around and quietly moving from cover to cover Rusty eventually managed to see the group. He looked through the scope trying to figure out which faction it was when he spotted the woman with the strange eyes and the guy she was with. Something in Rusty's mind disregarded the usual caution he would of taken, he hadn't known Duke for very long but here was his chance for revenge, standing up he took aim, firing carelessly at the group bullets flying at the group.

"Maybe it was one of the bandits from before", said the mercenary. Schwarz was it? Balalaïka had never been too good with names.
Balalaïka had no idea who was referring to anyway. Probably a group of people he had met some time ago and who happened to enjoy drinking. Nonetheless, the severed hand still clutching the bottle was sinister enough to make her hair stand up slightly. The Red Forest seemed to ooze danger and hidden menace, the place seemed to be telling them "you do not belong here, stalkers".
Balalaïka took her SVD and cradled it in her arms, ready for use against any enemies who might suddenly decide to attack the group...a likely possibility considering the place they were in. The tree's skeletal branches rustled and creaked slightly in a light breeze that seemed to stroke Balalaïka's cheek with the sensuous and terrible touch of death.
Unconsciously, she edged closer to where Leon aka Mr Matrix was walking. She realised what she was doing and hastily distanced herself again. The Asian man's skill at killing had horrified her before, but now, in this horrible place, they seemed to be a godsend.
--------------------------------------------------
"What the...?"
The two stalkers who had emerged up ahead had stopped and one of them had immediately started to shoot at them in a wild, haphazard way, forcing Penumbra and Maginot to duck for cover.
Bullets smashed into the boulders they were hiding behind, splintering rock and sending ricocheting bullets everywhere. After a healthy shooting session, the firing stopped, and Adder heard the familiar clicking noise of someone reloading his rifle.
In a second, she stood up once more and, pointing her VSS towards their attacked, squeezed off three shots. One bullet missed the enemy by a centimetre, one grazed his neck, leaving a nasty cut, and one slammed into his shoulder, perforating his armour and embedding itself in his flesh.
The deed done, Adder immediately disappeared behind the rocks again.
"Now we wait", she told the others in a neutral voice.

Schwarz chuckled at the hand before informing the group the group, "Did any hear about a group of bandits that managed to break into Duty's armory? I think that hand belonged to one of them, three of em were heavy drinkers."
He looked back seeing Balalaïka clutching at her rifle walking close to Meph, while Ferret seemed lost in his own world looking at the impaled heads of countless victims of the Monolith.
He said quietly to the nervous young man, "Don't worry to much about this shit, it's nasty but we ain't gonna end up like this. I hope." Chuckling grimly he drew both of his SMGs held them at the ready. "This place feels weird or unnatural even for the zone. Keep ya wits about, and watch them cliffs no telling whats watching us."
Rusty felt the bullets but the adrenaline overrode the pain, standing to fire again he felt slightly dizzy but fired again the gun fell from his hands as he bent to pick it up he began to realize it was more serious then blood loss, his head was already spinning wildly. Despite being hit twice he couldn't feel anything, probing the wound with his finger didn't induce the slightest bit of pain.
He was stumbling towards the woman who had shot him, a convulsion made him cough blood but he didn't stop, fumbling for his pistol he managed to draw it and fire off three shots before another convulsion wracked his body making him drop to his knees the visor on his suit fell off, blood was ebbing from his nose and mouth, he slowly staggered to his feet swaying heavily as he kept walking shaking almost uncontrollably fighting the venom he was 20 m from the group now, watching in horror and awe as he stumbled towards them.
Looking down he noted that his pistol was gone, he yanked to knife from it's sheath forcing every step, a mixed look was upon his face, his face was twisted in pain, but his eyes had a cold, dangerous look full of malice.
Fives steps from Adder he raised the knife for last attack, but over balanced and toppled forward the knife slammed into the ground inches from Adder's foot. Rusty gave one last violent convulsion before he finally died letting out a weak breath and a lot of blood. Giving the occasionally twitch.

As soon as the group was out of sight of the barrier outpost, Meph knelt by the road and opened his pack. Unzipping the olive armored Sunrise vest, he folded it up and put it inside. He quickly affixed the black reinforced cuirass of the lightened Wind of Freedom suit he had normally worn, switching back into the grey and black garb his employers had snagged going out of the Zone. The outfit seemed to meld into the shadows cast by the overhanging branches, as if the Asian himself had become one with the grey aura of death every square foot of this place seemed to exude.
"I doubt anything in this place will discriminate in what I wear when it starts shooting or clawing at me," he muttered grimly before nimbly springing up to catch up with the rest of the group.
He noticed multiple sets of clear tracks in the dirt, most notably several sets of exoskeleton tracks, much deeper than the usual imprints made by the heavily armored stalkers. "These guys were carrying something damn heavy with them..." he mused.
A hundred thin pillars of smoke rose somewhere far on the horizon, as if some vast fire or explosion was finally dying out. Meph said nothing, instead giving their silent surroundings a probing glance before returning his attention to the tracks that the group was following.

The rookie was a nervous wreck; the severed hand was enough to make his stomach turn. He fought the urge to vomit at the site of remains of the Monolith’s victims. Needless to say Ferret was rather glad that he had not eaten earlier. The whole forest reeked of death and suffering, this was a place of evil.
Every sound made his hair stand up on end. He held his gun in his shaking hands. He like Balalaïka found himself walking closer to the veterans of the group.
"Don't worry to much about this shit, it's nasty but we ain't gonna end up like this. I hope."
The words did little to rest his fear and anxiety.
It took him some time to muster up the courage to speak, his hear felt like it was going to rupture as it was beating so fast.
“Ar…are they true,” he asked somewhat foolishly his throat dry and voice shaky at best, “the stories about them.”

Gunshots rang out from the area where the Freedom stalkers were hiding, "Cease fire dammit!" Tarasov growled into the radio. Startled Monolithians began grabbing up their weapons and moving to defensive positions, "Shit, our cover's blow! Yakov, get an RPG into that barracks before they clear out!". Pulling the RPG-7 from his back, the captain stood up and took aim at one of the windows of the building. Before he could fire, a shot rang out from the Monolith outpost and a spurt of blood erupted from Yakov's chest. "Yakov is down!" Tarasov barked into the radio, "Sergeant, I need some covering fire!", "Affermative," said the Sergeant. "Freedomers, get your machinegunners up to the concrete barricades and move your marksmen onto the ridge, keep them suppressed!". Bullets smashed into the rocks and trees around Tarasov as he ran over to the limp form of the Captain, there was no pulse. Grabbing the RPG off the ground, Tarasov fired at the building, blowing a large hole in the wall and killing several nearby Monolithians.
Sprinting back to his rifle, Tarasov went prone to minimize his profile and opened fire on the Monolithians. Bullets began crashing into the boulder in front of him, and whizzing past his head. One hit the side of his helmet, ripping it from his head and leaving him temporarily stunned. "Shit! They've spotted me!." the Sergeant said over the radio, "I'm relocating to the south ea--Agh, FUCK! I'm hit!". "Just get back and sit tight, how bad is it?" Tarasov asked, ducking behind the boulder for cover. "Got me in the right leg," the Sergeant ghasped, "I can't tell how bad it is.". Swearing under his breath, Tarasov said "Do what you can for it, there's no chance of evac this far out so try to stop the bleeding.".
The Lieutenant leaned back out from behind the boulder, only to quickly pull his head back as a hail of bullets smashed into the rock. "I'm pinned down," he shouted into the radio, "Hit them from your side and try to draw their fire!"
-------------------------------------------------------------------
From behind the rock he was using for cover, Rodent heard the soft svhik of a VSS rifle and then a thumping impact as one of the subsonic rounds hit Rusty. Rodent heard Rusty pull back the bolt on his rifle, and push himself up to fire again. But then he heard a clatter, Rusty had dropped his gun and was staggering towards the unkown shooter before he finally collapsed. Standing up and stumbing towards where he heard Rusty fall, Rodent felt around untill he found the bandit's face. Moving his hands down to the man's neck, he felt for a pulse.
There was nothing.
A rage decended on Rodent, grabbing the VSS rifle from his back, he pointed it at where he thought the attackers to be. CLICK. Swearing, he gripped the rifle from it's barrel and staggered towards the nearest sounds of breathing, "Du Schwein! Ich töte jeden letzten von euch!" he shouted. Swinging the rifle like a club, he smashed its stock into the nearest objects, hearing several pleasing thumps and shouts of pain he continued failing blindly at the attackers, shouting at them furiously in German. With a loud crack, the bakelite stock of the rifle broke off, and he flung himself onto the nearest person. Judging by how he had heard the person speak, he guessed it was a woman. Grabbing her by the hair, he smashed the visor of his suit into her face and started beating at her with his fists.

"Damn it!", shouted Maginot as the insane German stalker attacked them before grabbing Adder by the hair and beating her savagely. Their presence had been given away now, and the Monolith was already shooting at them.
Maginot grabbed the stalker and dragged him violently away from Adder, whose face was now covered in blood. He then sent a strong punch into the man's face, knocking him over. The man fell to the floor and did not move. He was out cold.
Maginot, rubbing his fist, turned his attention to Adder, who was wiping blood from her face and groaning. She had a nasty cut on her forehead where the visor had cut her. It was bleeding profusely, but did not appear to be too serious.
"Go support the army boys!" said Maginot to the others, "I'll take care of the commandant."
He cleaned Adder's wound and quickly bandaged her. From the looks of it, she didn't need stitches.
"-I didn't know you could throw a punch like that", said Adder with a smile that made her wince. A large bruise was appearing on her cheek.
"-I've been in a few fights...when I was younger."
Adder chuckled. "I should be okay. Go help the others with the attack."
Maginot hesitated before patting Adder on the arm and heading off, unslinging his Sig rifle. The other Freedomers were pouring fire onto the Monolithians, and the fanatics seemed to be buckling under the pressure.
Maginot took up position next to his comrades and opened fire too, aiming at a Monolith soldier who had briefly emerged from cover and taking him down with a few well-aimed shots.
--------------------------------
Balalaïka stopped at the first gunshots. She turned to see what the others were doing and saw that they too had stopped. The gunfight seemed to be happening somewhere up ahead.
The group resumed its progress, moving faster this time. After a while they came upon a scene of battle. Balalaïka saw several people wearing green suits firing at Monolithians...Freedom. They had probably managed to catch up with the leader and his expedition.
She raised her SVD and scanned the area with her scope. She recognised Maginot, Freedom's new leader. He was shooting at Monolithians up ahead. Balalaïka's eye was drawn to the area closer to her and her group...here eyes widened as she saw who was sitting there, behind a boulder.
Dark red hair was clearly visible above a white bandage slightly stained by blood. The woman looked up, and Balalaïka recognised the eyes: green with reptilian slits.
"Target spotted" she said, "she appears to be injured."
Up till now she had thought it would be easy. Shoot the commandant in the head then promptly head back to Duty's base to claim her reward. The situation itself was perfect: the commandant's allies were too busy fighting the Monolithians, she was injured and was alone.
But now that she was at Balalaïka's mercy, Balalaïka couldn't imagine herself shooting the commandant.
Balalaïka turned to Meph. "What do we do?", she asked, preferring to delegate the responsibilities to the professional killer in the group, only to find him gone.

Schwarz had scouted ahead of the pack letting them decide their own way of dealing with Adder, he was quietly poking about when when knocked over a SVD and a RPG, looking down a faint glow shone out from under a small rock, grabbing the PDA he looked through it finding nothing of interest, he checked how much cash was on it almost dropping the PDA he found it contained 65600ru, stuffing it into a secure pocket. He looked over the SVD, he detached the magazine for Balalaïka. Turning he saw several Monolith approaching, firing at the Freedomers. He hefted up the RPG and aimed at a spot where the group was heading waiting for the right time he fired all 6 of the troops were sent flying, as well a large clumps of dirt and bitumen several piece hitting him about the head and chest. Feeling one of the light cuts gingerly wiping the dust off of him, he carefully went back to the group to see if they had reached a conclusion about what they intended to do now that they had caught up with their target.
"Hey kiddo, catch." He said to Balalaïka as he approached tossing the magazine to her before crouching down waiting to see what the others intended to do.
"You guys got a plan or what? She's right fucking there, take ya damn shot, or we should get the hell out of here." He said feeling quite content on finding the PDA and didn't really care what happened next but had his revolver out just in case things got heated.
Schwarz picks up Rusty's PDA containing 65600ru.

"What the hell is going on over there?!" Sokol barked through his intercom. The side of the forest encircling the compound where Penumbra was stationed had suddenly exploded in random shooting, and it wasn't towards the Monolithians.
Obviously, the brown and gray troops were slowly coming to, pouring out of the various barracks. Sokol heard the military open fire from the other ridge, and an RPG round now slammed into the nearest building, throwing several zealots, as well as bricks, dust, and body parts into the air.
"Who's still in command with you guys?!" Sokol roared as he saw more Monolithians pull off from the base and head towards the opposite ridge. Some were also headed towards the road, but Sokol and the two gunners were well shielded by the foliage. If the roaches spread out any further, they could encircle their attackers, and then things would turn quite problematic.
"The Commandant has fallen back, we've gotten attacked and she's injured. Alpha One is with her in the rear, but he's still up and shooting. We're getting swarmed here!" came the response. Sokol slammed his fist into the trunk of a tree, wincing as his knuckles cracked slightly and the glove on his hand ripped from the impact.
"Well, settle your positions then, you stealth rats, I'm telling you as Alpha Two! There's a squad of Monolithians coming right your way, and they'll have you by the neck if they get up close." the Freedom sniper waited for an affirmative, then fell back to the two exoskeleton-coated gunners. "Get those MG36s set up," he yelled "we're in for a little visit from the bitches north!" The fanatics were slowly approaching.
Then he noticed three figures approach from the road they were guarding, from the south. Loners or lone mercs, judging from their equipment, he thought. The tallest wore a mercenary suit, and carried a solid variety of guns on him, including a Bren and a hefty Colt Anaconda. The shortest wore a simple hooded leather jacket, but carried an SVD in her arms. The last wore a Sunrise suit, and carried an AK.
“Keep those bastards at bay if they decide to come around,” he said to the two machinegunners stationed in the brush “I’ll go and see what’s up with those three. If you hear shooting from behind and I go down, turn around and tear those three assholes that shot me a few hundred new holes in them.”
The Freedomer packed his rifle and slung it over his shoulder. Drawing his USP, he emerged from the undergrowth and walked up to the three stalkers. He judged his liquid-enhanced armor would be enough to withstand several hits from the smaller man’s AK, and that his reflexes would greatly outmatch the SVD wielder in close range combat if she decided to raise her gun. The mercenary however, would be a bigger problem. Sokol could now see he carried two SMGs, one in each hand.
Nevertheless, even if he was shot or killed by these three strangers, who seemingly appeared from nowhere, the two gunners behind him would instantly make short work of them. Drawing himself up to his entire height of nearly seven feet, he accosted the squad. “Stalkers!” he yelled “Identify yourselves! Can’t you see there’s a war going on here!?” Another explosion echoed from the Monolith compound, as if to back his statement up.
Meph could almost feel stealthy eyes probing him from the forest depths as he heard gunshots erupt ahead of them. Indeed, the Freedom Commandant, Nadya Orumov, was hardly one hundred and fifty feet away from him. A single shot from his silenced M16 would do the trick, he thought, as he stared through his scope at the woman, partially out of sight due a blocking tree.
But they were being watched, he thought. The second he took that shot, they would all be dead.
“You guys got a plan or what? She's right fucking there, take ya damn shot, or we should get the hell out of here” he heard Schwarz say. Evidently, the man didn’t even feel the danger they were all in at the moment. Meph felt more helpless and open than he had when the bloodsuckers circled the abandoned farmstead he had taken refuge in the very previous night. No, it was too late to warn them, time to take to cover, he thought.
As quietly as he could, he crept to the back of the group and slowly backed away into the forest, making less sound than the wind sweeping down the road. His dark gray and black suit seemed to melt together with the shadows once more. Several seconds later, he heard Balalaika’s voice speak, and then shut off abruptly. No doubt the woman had turned around only to find him gone.
He stayed at the periphery of the underbrush, silent as the grave. Soon enough, before the woman could apparently recover from his disappearance, another, unfamiliar voice spoke. Through the brambles in front of him, he could see an immensely tall figure clad in green emerge. A Freedomer! He had been right about the group being watched.
He needed to see no more. Turning around, he stealthily crept through the underbrush to get a better view on Freedom’s positions.

The shit had hit the fan and the plan had fallen apart at the seams. What was worse Meph had gone off and disappeared. The expert Bandit had just abandoned them leaving he and Balalaika at the mercy of the giant of a Freedomer. Yet hope was not all lost as they still had Schwarz, but could the Mercenary be trusted? What if he just decided to cut his losses at turn in the would-be assassins? He could get a nice juicy reward from Freedom if he did so, that just might cover all of his expenses and have a little left over.
"Balalaika," Ferret whispered so that only she could hear him, "the Merc might snitch, be ready to leg it."
