Well, gentlemen, we all have to admit that the ZSG's RP section has gone well beyond the "grab artefact, sell artefact, win moniez" phase and has developed its own (probably very ridiculous to outsiders) version of the Zone, with its own legends, people and items.
This would probably be incredibly confusing to any new guy who joins the Skype chat and is put through a conversation pertaining to the DEAGLE or some other obscure ZSG RP shenanigans. It is time we solved this problem.
What I propose is this: a compendium of all the plots, characters, items n' stuff in the RP. A who is who, what is what, and especially WHY compendium to help the (rare) newcomer understand this strange and disturbing world and get a proper footing.

Characters... I'll start with my own since that's easiest. Everyone else should probably follow. List your living character first.
1. Lt. Col Rurik: Rurik is basically the acting leader of Duty, encased in a massive exoskeleton suit and standing 7"2' he is easily spotted by stalkers, he has lived within the zone's borders for as long as most people can remember. Often travels within the zone exploring new areas and escorting rookies to Rostok. Usually calm but can crack under pressure. Tends to shoot down helicopters... and pull things apart with his bear hands.
2. Karc: Karc is a mercenary who has been doing this line of work for more than half of his life, having reached the zone Karc often tries to forget the work he did outside of the zone, he became a skilled killer. Karc now works as an agent for the mercenary faction carrying out missions ranging from scouting through to search and destroy to assassination missions. Tends to stay upbeat regardless of a mission even if it's gone to shit. When the situation is available Karc will use his knives instead of firearms.
3. Schwarz, El and Four: These three mercenaries work with Karc, having worked together outside of the zone for several years they work well as a team, often able to gather information about any mission Karc. Briefly on these three Schwarz basically works as extra firepower for missions and a think tank if one option in a certain mission isn't working he also specialises in hand to hand combat, El is a sniper/free runner being skilled at climbing he often scouts areas from places most couldn't reach, and Four simply is another gun for hire, but is able to talk to bandits.
4. Renegade: This character is my latest one, a quiet cautious stalker who was terribly scarred before entering the zone, he is quiet capable of blending into his surroundings, and rarely removes his gas mask or scarf. Terrified of fire.
Past Stalkers...
Dark: Was part of Schwarz' group but was killed in X16 when attacking several mutants. He was slightly fat so it's funny...
Rusty: An infamous bandit, was part of Leon's small team which which was hunting Lutiy, they managed to not only sneak into Rostok but infiltrate the holy grail, Duty's armory, stealing an expensive suit, Styer AUG and Dragunov SVD, made it to Pripyat Stadium and killed a pseudogiant, was killed in Red Forest by Adder and her lethal venom ammunition.

Example:
Adder/Nadya Orumov, also known as "Addurrr":
Freedom's paranoid commandant and leader of Penumbra. She is mostly known for her reptilian pupils, the result of a mutation back in the Wild Territory (see One Does not Walk into Yantar!). She is widely seen as the Zone's "most rape worthy" character, although whether or not this is a compliment has not quite been established yet.
She is currently involved in a vicious feud with psychotic stalker Balalaika, and is a good candidate for the "Target of Most Failed Assassination Attempts" award.

Sgt. Sigbrand Myrvang
At nineteen years old, standing 5' 11" tall and weighing in at 125 pounds, Sigbrand is hardly a menacing sight. His appearance, however, is deceiving as his skill with a sniper rifle is almost unrivaled. After entering the Zone with his brother, Harmund, he left with a group of other stalkers along with Duty's Lieutenant Rurik. Once the pair reached Rostok, they joined Duty and left on another mission with Rurik and some of the same loners (See "One does not simply walk into Yantar!"). During the trip, Harmund and Sigbrand became lost in the Limansk underground. They were attacked by a pack of bloodsuckers and Harmund killed almost all of them to protect Sigbrand. After Sigbrand rejoined the group and fought for a brief period of time in the battle of Limansk, the group returned to Rostok and Sigbrand was promoted for his valor.
Skomorokh Skomorokh is a poor minstrel boy turned batshit insane psycho-killer. He usually wears a tattered black trench coat over his armor and always carries his Balalaika with him.
Aristotle & Diogenes Two members of Freedom, these guys work as a marksman and spotter team, usually working as a pair or in smaller squads. Aristotle tends to think too much for his own good, and his mind wanders often. Diogenes is too cynical for his own good, and is quite reliant on his flask and cigarettes.
Rodent Rodent used to be a Loner. He accompanied Leon and Co. to hunt down the bandit Lutiy (See Wolves in Sheep's clothing and Against all Ionized odds.). The group followed Lutiy all the way to pripyat, but their journey ended (for everyone except Leon anyway) at the stadium in Pripyat during a battle with a Pseudogiant. The giant smashed Rodent into a downed helicopter with enough radiation around it to make the entire population of combined eastern Europe grow tumors the size of basketballs that also glow in the dark. The radiation, instead of killing Rodent, caused him to loose the upper layer of his skin. The rest, however gained the ability to bend visible light around it rendering him completely invisible. This also left him blind. As his mutation developed, Rodent was left with little of his sentience left, and still roams the zone.
-----Dead Stalkers----- Harmund Myrvang Quite the opposite of Sigbrand in every way, Harmund went with his brother in the Yantar thread. He fought off an entire pack of bloodsuckers to save his brother, and died in the process.
Lt. Sergei "Wolf" Tarasov An experienced soldier, Tarasov lead recon teams and strike forces into the zone for the Ukrainian military. After his team was killed and he was left for dead during a battle with Monolithian forces, Tarasov was driven mad and went on a crusade to kill every wrongdoe--uh--Person he though was responsible for the death of his men. Tarasov eventually ended up fighting Victor the magical robot stalker and was impaled by the latter's massive homemade sword. Before he died, however, Tarasov pulled the pins on about 9001 grenades which made him, Victor, and the surrounding hillside, quite dead.
Vasily Kozlov Leader of all (official)scientific research in the Zone, Vasily was a pretty cool guy. After some batshit plot I came up with while I was probably drunk, he intentionally mutated himself. The result was bones as strong as $800 china plates, skin as thin as paper, and a passive mental link to the Monolith. This was all well and good until I realised I had no Idea what I was now going to do with a gimp'd character. So I had Vasily kill himself after receiving a letter of unknown origin and content. Trolololol.

Balalaika/Anastasia Malenkov, also known as "Trololaika" and "Midget":
A small, dark-haired and blue-eyed bundle of insanity and violence. Started out as an unremarkable and soon to be forgotten little lady with good sniper skills, but was later recruited by Duty to go on the nigh impossible mission of killing Adder by herself. After almost stabbing Adder to death, she was caught in an explosion and sprayed with an unknown corrosive chemical that disfigured her and sent her over the edge.
Her current goal in life is to kill Adder and Voronin in the most cruel way possible. She also underwent a mutation after chasing Adder through a blow-out, and can control fear. Her best friend is Mr Stabby, a very eloquent saw-toothed bayonet.
Maginot/Yves Castel, also known as "Frenchman":
The Zone's only French stalker. Does not comply with the usual surrendering, cheese-eating stereotype and is Freedom's current leader. One of the few people who went one on one with Balalaika and lived to tell the tale.

Ferret: The Ex-Bandit or Adder and Mags expendable lap dog. (faction affiliation changed in For a Few Rubles More) His is a part of Freedom’s elite troops, Penumbra. In the The Point of No Return he received a mutation that allows his mind to leave his body for short periods of time.
Swift: The short, knife toting, Gopnick slaying Navajo. (Down and Out in Rostok) .
Morak: Ex Soldier, don’t like Bandits, mutants or other stalkers so he joined Duty. Is called Voronin's rent boy by some members on this site.
Verona: Sister of Morak, enough said.

I suppose it's my turn to post in here. Oh boy...
I'll do my characters by current status and in order of appearance in the RP.
First the dead and gone:
Victor - Deceased. Probably the first character to appear in the RP. Medical student turned stalker. Traveled North and back with Rurik and the rest of the first generation RP characters (One does not simply walk into Yantar). Worked for Duty for some time afterwards as a loner (Exodus). Assisted Freedom in preventing the spread of the virus in "Epidemic" and acquired a mutation in the process that bound him to a mechanical body with telekinetic abilities. Eventually traveled North to Jupiter where he was grenaded by Zeno's Tarasov after impaling him (The Point of No Return).
Seth - Deceased. First appointed Freedom leader in the RP and a agent of the mercenaries for a very special mission to shut down the NPP itself. Was a swell guy. Led an expedition composed of himself, his two aides, Karc, couple other mercenaries, Vasily Kozlov, and some other members from Yantar to Pripyat (Against the Ionized Odds). He left everyone at Limansk in order to continue alone for fear of endangering everyone on his mission. Was killed by his rival, Lutiy, at the stadium before he could continue (Cursum Perficio). Passed Freederp leadership to Maginot before he could continue.
Thor - Deceased. First aide to Seth. Almost as huge as Rurik. Traveled North with him until Limansk where he stayed back to hold off a huge Monolith force (Against the Ionized Odds). Got caught in a tower during a huge explosion and very nearly died. Was eventually captured by the Monolith and zombified and attacked Seth at the Stadium(Cursum Perficio). Eventually killed by Lutiy.
Jericho - Deceased. First appointed Monolith leader. Mounted an assault on Limansk and the mercenaries there with a huge force while Seth's group was trying to move through north(Against the Ionized Odds). Was killed, unsurprisingly and once more, by Lutiy.
Leon - Deceased. Initially a mercenary sent by the bandits to kill Lutiy. Led a group North that included Rusty, Duke, and Rodent. Robbed the Duty armory of a ton of shit and snuck into the Freederp base as well (Wolves in Sheep's Clothing). Traveled all the way to Pripyat where he caught up with Lutiy and Seth. Successfully shot Lutiy but was captured by the Monolith all the same, and eventually became its new leader after Jericho's death and eventually went completely batshit. Went on to capture Seth's second aide and zombify him as well before shooting himself.
Meph - Deceased. Asian Mafioso sent to kill Adder. Did a ton of pretty cool shit in a couple long RP threads (Epidemic, For a Few Rubles More) but eventually got killed by Sigbrand nonetheless.
Sokol - Aforementioned second aide to Seth. Arguably best sniper in the Zone tied with Sigbrand. Traveled with everyone to Limansk, came back alive. Went with Adder and Maginot to destroy the Scorcher (For a Few Rubles More[/i] and succeeded in that too. Got stabbed fatally by Meph, but was captured and zombified by Leon before he could die. Currently the de facto and once again batshit leader of the Monolith, and has some curious psychic abilities to show for it. Struck a deal with Sigbrand to capture Adder in return for a very special item, which he has since lost (The Point of No Return).
Dober - Old, smelly bandit and former superior to Meph. Wasn't an actual major character until recently, although he cameo'd in the RP for a while. Managed to travel to Zaton from the Garbage, wound Sokol, and steal the very special item promised to Sigbrand (The Point of No Return). Was later captured by Midas, with whom he still remains (Chasing Shadows). Deceptively deceptive.
Midas - Obscenely rich mercenary initially hailing from another S.T.A.L.K.E.R. RP interrelated with this site. Weapons and unique equipment/artifact trader that people want dead. Current target of a group moving from Rostok (Chasing Shadows). Has a small army of mercenaries under his command, as well as a base in the Red Forest.
Peregrine - My current main character. Brother of Lutiy, and came to the Zone to search of the latter. Currently tasked with killing Midas, and has some curious mental issues where his brother is concerned, and is in many ways his opposite in the moral sense. (Chasing Shadows)
Lutiy - Deceased? I'm not even quite certain where to begin on this one. Somehow played a part in almost every thread in the RP despite being dead for a while, and is still a major influence as far as plot lines go. It's almost impossible to explain the exact role Lutiy played in all the plots. The troll character of the ZSGRP.

Items...
DEAGLE: Gordon Freeman's gun, this gun has a tendency to change hands very quickly having at least 4 previous owners. Rumoring to preserve part of the owners soul? ALTERNATE: A highly customized Desert Eagle that fires the 9x39mm round. Originally owned by the stalker Gordon Freeman, it then passed into the hands of Harmund Myrvang. After Harmund was killed in the Limansk underground, the bandit Lutiy discovered the DEAGLE and kept it for himself. When Lutiy was killed, it passed on to the now Monolithified Sokol, who then had it taken from him by Dober, the smelly bandit man.
Resonance Crystal: A tool used by the high preachers of the monolith. It acts like a radio, allowing the Monolith's minions to project its will to wherever the crystal happens to be. Usually used to Monolithify stalker that High Preachers find promising.
((Feel free to edit how you see fit.))
