"So, what are we gonna do now?" Durdan asked, slurring his words a little. "Assuming your staying with me?" Globe nodded and said. "If i were you, i would sell those documents you've got there real quick, they're worth a lot of money and will probably get you set up with a few of the good jobs from barkeep." Durdan considered for a moment. They're no use to me now, without my team i wouldn't stand a chance in the labs. He walked over to the bar, behind which was the infamous Barkeep- A grumpy middle aged man with tattood forearms. "How much would you give me for these?" Durdan said, handing the documents to barkeep. The man's eyes widened as he rifled through and he said. "I can give you eight thousand for this very helpful information." Durdan, his mind clouded by vodka, took a moment to comprehend. "I think that is not enough to pay for the deaths of my men, not to mention the helicopter." Barkeep looked surprised. "What did you say? You're one of those mercs that the bigland bastards send in for technology and the like aren't you." Durdan nodded. "Well, considering you must have lost a few friends in that helicopter crash of yours, yes i saw it flying around. I will give you ten-thousand and thats my final offer." "Deal." Durdan pulled out his PDA to recieve payment. After that was done, Barkeep leaned over and said in a conspiratorial voice. "Are you and you friend over there interested in any special jobs?"

Globe was listening to his new companion's conversation with Barkeep very carefully and when he heard the phrase "special jobs", Globe jumped up from his chair and ran over to the counter. "Yes, yes we would be!" said the loner anxiously. Durdan looked at Globe curiously, but didn't say anything as he was interested as well. "Well then" said Barkeep "you Merc, you don't work for your old employers anymore, to them you're dead, you work for me. And as for you stalker, this guy will need to be accompanied on his new job coz it's not a one man thing! These documents you had to get are very important and would really turn things around here... You don't need to know how just yet, but when I think you're trustworthy I'll tell you... Until then it's just very important paper." The trader looked at the pair questionably. "Now, you two think you're up for this? Because if I get ALL the documents I'm looking for and they're readable, then I'll pay you some big money! It's not gunna be easy, but it'll be worth it...". Without further hesitation Globe answered "Yes! We're in! Now what about the money? You see my equipment isn't as good as it could be... And I'll need a can of black spray-paint...". "Well, I knew you'd say that, and the spray-paint is on the house this time" Barkeep took out an old rust and half empty can of black paint and gave it to Globe, who put it in his pocket and took out his PDA for the money transaction, it bleeped and 5000 rubles were transferred to him. "Good" said Globe "Now where exactly are we going?". "X-19... It's a secret facility used by scientists and the Ukrainian government for mind control experiments and have resulted in the Brain Scorcher which you probably know about. If it's still operating then it's gunna be heavily guarded by Monolith and immensely hard to get into, but I'm sure you two'll find a way... Now get your stuff ready and get going! I need this stuff ASAP!"
Globe told Durdan to get his things and wait for him in the hangar near the Arena, they'll get some sleep and move out early in the morning. Globe himself went outside the bar and turned around the left corner into a dead-end. He took off his Wind of Freedom suit and spray-painted black most of the suit apart from things like the artifact belt etc. He still left some camo patches, but at least now he wouldn't be confused with Freedom and could avoid a lot of tension and problems. The paint dried quickly and when it finished Globe got his stuff and went to the Duty headquarters to upgrade his rifle... After that was done he went back to the hanger and joined Durdan who was already asleep...

The Merc watched his new friend rush out the door with a bemused smile. He turned to Barkeep. "I want to sell some stuff." He said to the burly man. Barkeep nodded and asked. "What've you got for me?" Welcoming the decreased weight in his pack, Durdan walked out of the door, walking past Globe who was spraying his wind of freedom suit with a can of black spraypaint. A prudent choice, seeing as Duty controlled this part of the zone and they didn't take very kindly to Freedom members casually strolling around their base. Durdan angled towards the Duty compound, coming to a stop infront of the guards who looked at him with hostile stares he said. "I'm here for some upgrades, can i come in?" "Alright, but no funny business or you'll end up like him." The sergeant pointed to a rotting corpse hanging from the tower behind Durdan. "You get the message Merc?" Durdan nodded, surprised by the hostility with which the Dutier said the final word in his sentence. He walked on, looking to his right he saw a sign saying Mechanic, he continued over into the building and saw a man sitting behind a counter, tinkering with an SVU. "You want trading or tinkering?" He said, not looking up. Durdan asked for what he wanted, took off his suit and watched as the technician worked. When the dutier was finished Durdan transmitted the money from his account, pulled on his Merc suit and was walking away when the man said. "You look like a prime recruit for our mighty faction, consider joining us, i wouldn't want to see someone as promising as you go to waste. If you decide to join talk to Rurik." Durdan was tempted, and mulled it over in his mind. Maybe after the job. He walked out of the Duty compound, passing Globe on the way and went to the hanger where they were to meet. He sat down in a dark corner and switched his new night vision device. All was in order, the night vision seemed very good quality. He walked over to the fire and sat with a group of loners, one playing a guitar and singing fairly well. Gazing into the flames, he thanked God that he was still alive and was lullled into sleep by the sweet music.

Globe woke up Durdan the next morning with a punch on the shoulder "Wake up Merc! We ain't got time to waste!". Not waiting for his companion to get up, Globe got his things and began to walk towards the exit of the building. It was empty of any furniture or machinery apart from a fire and some old mattresses in the middle of the place. Durdan caught up with Globe when he was just coming out of the building to meet the fresh Zone air. "The sun isn't even up yet!" said Durdan complainingly, "A Russian saying goes 'God blesses whoever gets up early' and we'll definitely need his blessing for this job...". The Merc grumbled something back but still carried on walking. They passed another building just like the one they were sleeping in not so long ago and saw a group of three or maybe four stalkers sleeping, it was too dark to tell. When they turned around the corner they saw the Duty checkpoint which was set up there to filter anyone coming from Wild Territory, which in truth wasn't much, and The Military Warehouses. This time the guards didn't bother Globe unlike when he came from the Warehouses in his new suit, when it's black it doesn't look as 'Freedomly'. They stopped at the cross-roads and looked at the signs. The one they needed was above a creepy looking, blood splattered gate. The companions looked at each other and nodded. Then Durdan went in first, Globe a bit after, covering him with his sniper. They came out of the gate into a narrowish courtyard with some trees and old trucks which Globe instantly checked in his mind as 'good cover'. He took up a spot behind a stump which gave a great view of the two floor building in front of them. Durdan crouched and slowly began to move forward from cover to cover. Then they both got interference on their PDA's and Durdan stopped behind a mutated oak. "I think I just saw movement somewhere near the entrance!" "Where?" "In the trees" "There's no one there!" "But I saw someone! I swear!" "Shut up and why the hell are you not using the private channel anyways?! Now whoever you presumably saw knows all about us you dumb shit!" "Sorry... I'm still not used to this..." "I don't care! Get back to work!" Durdan looked back at Globe who was looking at the second floor of the building through his rifle scope. The loner pointed up and put up two fingers meaning there were two targets on the second floor, he couldn't tell who it was yet. Durdan looked back at the building and then at the sky, it was perfect conditions to test out his night vision in 'field situation'. He put the goggles on and turned them on. His vision flashed and then went black and white with shades (I hope it's black and white and not green...), he could now see two heads looking out the windows looking into the space in front of Durdan himself... Durdan recognized them as Mercs and switched his PDA to his and Globes private channel and whispered "They are mercenaries, I can try and talk to them..."

Durdan opened the public channel on his PDA and spoke into the microphone in a calm tone. "You mercs in the bridge, can i talk to your leader, i mean you no harm." "Fine, but don't make a move or we'll fill you with so much lead that we can melt you down and make bullets out of you. Got it?" A harsh voice replied. Durdan stood up from his cover, making sure that his rifle was slung securely over his back and his pistol was strapped into its holster where he could easily reach it. He also made sure that his knife-hidden in the lining of his jacket- could be easily drawn when it was required. He switched off his night vision as well, thanful that the technician had installed it in the lenses of his gas mask. Durdan walked slowly and surely towards the building when he was half way to the building, an imposing figure appeared in the doorway and walked out into the sunlight, he wore a SEVA suit painted in the mercenary colours. He carried his helmet in the crook of his arm, revealing an arrogant smile. "I see we've got another little shit trying to play at soldiers." He said, his smile never leaving his face. "Why don't you run back to mummy, this is big boy land. This is our territory. What makes you think that we should let you through when we killed all those others for just for being here, eh?" He motioned to the bodies littering the ground. "Tell me." "I'm a merc. I'm on a mission with loads of money resting on my success, my whole squad are dead and i'm in a fucking bad mood!" Durdan said, appalled at what his kind had sunk to. This is why mercs are so hated here, no wonder i was looked at with suspicion. He thought. "That's quite a sad story my friend." The leader said. "But not sad enough to let you through i'm afraid." He looked Durdan straight in the eye, still smiling and said casually. "Boys, kill him." Quick as a flash, Durdan pullled his knife out of his sleeve and stabbed the man in the side of the neck, piercing the artery. He grabbed him and spund him around, using him as a shield he pulled out his pistol and started firing blindly at the mercs on the bridge. "Globe, take them down!" he shouted, slowly sidestepping towards the door. When he was close enough, Durdan threw down the bullet riddled corpse and sprinted for the door, bullets pinging of the old tarmac around his feet. Ducking inside the door he holstered his pistol and pulled out his Galil and cocked it. He then peered out from cover, looking down the long corridor. He two mercs rush in from the back entrance and start to run down the corridor. Durdan aimed and fired, taking down one of the men with a head shot, he then fired at the second merc, riddling the mans chest with bullets. The sounds of gunfire from above him stopped and he slowly lowered his weapon, still wary of potential attackers. Durdan walked towards the two corpses and started to looted them, he then walked back to the mercenary leader and stripped him of weapons, cash and his PDA, he had decided that the SEVA suit was in too much of a bad condition to be able to wear. He looked to his right and saw Globe looking through the pockets of a mercenary who had falllen from the bridge, a knife in his hand. He saw Durdan and held out an AKM, it was highly modified, with a PSO-1 scope attached to the top and some modifications to the barrel and stock. "I think you should use this." Globe said. "Thanks." "Another thing, come over here." Durdan walked over to the body and was shocked by what he saw. "I made a smiley face." His friend said, grinning mischeviously. The mercenary's shirt was ripped open, and large gashes had been applied on his chest, forming a crude smiley face carved into the flesh. Durdan looked at Globe, horrified. "Why?" he asked "I was bored." Globe muttered. Durdan was aghast, but he thought it would be prudent to keep his mouth shut. "I'll wait for you on the other side, be quick."
Durdan found:

Globe was watching the conversation from a distance through his rifle scope in case Durdan needed any help if shit went down. The Merc leader was wearing a blue-grayish SEVA suit without the helmet on. Durdan didn't seem to be very happy with the course of the conversation and then Globe read the leader's lips "Kill him". In a second a knife appeared in Durdan's hand and hit the leader in the neck. Globe pulled the trigger on his SVT three times and another Merc's head exploded. Durdan was using the dead leader's body as a shield and moving to cover whilst shooting at the enemies with his pistol. Globe fired a few more shots and hit a man's knee and then his neck. When the clip finished the loner didn't have time to reload, he sprang out of his cover with his Colt and ran towards the Mercs whilst shooting at them. There was one remaining Merc in sight. He was atop the bridge shooting at Durdan from a really good looking AKM. Globe aimed and shot him in the leg. The Merc fell off the bridge and into a bush. Globe ran over to him and was kicked in the stomach by the still alive Merc. The wounded Merc then pushed himself up and jumped onto Globe, but was met by a knife. Globe's knife entered the man directly in the heart ending his life instantly. The loner pushed him off of himself and then sat up. He checked his suit and then switched back to the Merc. "I hate Mercs like you. You're sometimes even worse than bandits." with those words Globe jabbed the man in the chest once again leaving a gash symmetrical to the first one and then undid the man's armor. Then he plunged his knife into the man's stomach and sliced a curve making all of the wounds come too look like a smiley face. Then Durdan came over to him. When Globe saw him he grabbed the AKM and stood up. "Hey! I think you should use this..." said Globe stretching out the gun towards his friend. "Thanks... You ok?" said Durdan back, examining his new rifle. "Yeah... Come see this" Globe showed Durdan the body of the man who fell off the roof. "Why did you do this?" Durdan was shocked by what his friend did... "Erm... I was bored" muttered Globe, he didn't want to reveal his over-vengefulness to his friend just yet. Back home he did some horrible things to his bullies at school for the smallest things like them call g him a nerd or a light punch on the shoulder. "We better get going..." said both companions simultaneously. They entered the building in front of them and then went out to a big train station. They climbed over the trains and saw a crash site of a helicopter and many rotten bodies in Merc and scientist outfits who seemed to have been there for a very long time now. They went passed a collapsed building site which seemed to have been destroyed quite recently. Then they reached a tunnel under a bridge in which the air seemed to rise quite wavy and felt really hot. Globe saw some Droplet artifacts on the floor and realized why the air was wavy. "Burners!" he said throwing a bolt inside the tunnel and moving through picking up the artifacts on his way, not forgetting to leave a few for his companion. After a few more bolts they were over on the other side. Globe picked up 3 Droplets and Durdan picked up 2. Then, in about half an hour, they were there. Yantar. Globe was shocked by the look of it, thinking that not so long ago it was a beautiful lake where people used to fish and couples used to go for picnics. Then he heard a bleep on his PDA and looked at it. It was a distress signal coming from the mobile lab. He looked down and saw flashes of gunfire. Globe looked at Durdan who had the same signal and they both began to run down towards the fight.

Horus hugged his trench coat tighter around himself and shuffled closer to the fire. It was a cold morning and he was still hungry after his insubstantial breakfast of stale bread and half a can of tuna. You would think, if you served as a guard at the scientist's bunker, that they might have some of their good food to spare. But no, they kept it all to themselves, giving the exscuse that they couldn't research on an empty stomach. His two remaining squadmates, Dimka and Boris were sitting on the other side of their meagre fire, holding their hands out to the flames, trying to expell the cold from their fingers. Horus got up, looking around him and taking note that all the watch posts were manned. It would be plain embarrising if they were snuck up on by zombies. Horus walked over to the door of the scientific lab and opened the door, after about ten seconds the outer door sealed and the inner door opened. He stepped over the threshold into the dimly lit lab, and walked round the corner to the counter where sat the grey haired leader of the ecologists, Professor Sakharov. "Me and my friends are done here, we want our pay now." Anatoly said in a menacing tone. "What? What did you say? Sorry young man, i'm a little hard of hearing, say it louder." Sakharov replied. "I said, me and my friends are leaving, we want our pay NOW." Horus shouted. "Okay, okay, no need to shout. So what did we agree your payment was?" "Those winter Sunrise suits, winter is coming and with what i have on now, i'm not gonna get through another firefight." "Very well," Sakharov walked away from the counter into the back room, Horus heard the noises of a glass cabinet being opened and the professor came back with three white Sunrise suits which he dumped on the counter. "Do you and your associates want to work for us another..." Sakharov was interrupted by the sudden whine of the alarm. "Zombies!" The old man shouted in alarm "Horus get out there." Horus dropped the suits and sprinted for the door, cursing the wait for the outer doors to open. Horus stepped outside and found his squadmates waiting for him. "Allright, Boris you go on the roof and provide sniper support Dimka, you're with me." Horus pulled back the mechanism on his AKSU and was greeted by a satisfying CHK-CHK as a bullet was chambered. He and Dimka jogged to the perimeter where another squad of loners were setting up a rusty PKP Pecheneg on a tripod. "Okay boys, get ready and don't lose your nerve." Horus said, crouching down and looking down his sights. For a few moments all was silent. Then Horus heard the sound of heavy, shuffling footfalls, moans and disjointed centences in many different languages. It was a few moments more until the enemies came into view. They had been stalkers once. But now they were nothing, their minds destroyed by psychic emmisions or mutants. Their faces were in various states of decomposition, their guns and suits in utter disrepair, Horus could even see one with an intestine hanging out of a rip in its belly. He had to resist the urge to retch. Then he gave the order. "Take them down." he shouted and the loner next to him opened up with the RPK, the zombies started to retaliate and soon the air was filled with the sound of small arms fire. One of the zombies went down, its arm blown clean off of its shoulder. Another, the one with an intestine hanging out of its stomach shot Dimka several times in the chest, and Horus' friend went down choking on his own blood. Horus roared and emptied his magazine on the 'mutant'. Horus stood up and sprinted for the wall of the compound, rusty corrugated iron, which offered little protection from bullets. The ex-soldier drew his combat knife and tackled a zombie, plunging it into the beast's throat over and over again, but still it would not die. Clammy hands reached up to his throat and started to throttle him, Horus hacked at the creatures arms and face but it would not let go, it was getting harder and harder to breath. Then the hands slackened and slid off his neck, and he looked up to see Boris standing over him with his pistol outstretched and a look of disdain on his face. "You alright boss?" he asked. "Yeah, i think i'm alright. Now get back to the fight." But it was over, none of the fiends was left alive. Horus looked back at the outpost and saw that most of the other group were intact. He then went about looting the zombies. After about a minute he heard a strangled cry and looked around just in time to see Boris's head pop like a ripe melon, a zombie's hand protruding from the ruptured skull. Horus pulled his AKSU out, walked over to the zombie and fired, point blank into the monster. After picking up Boris and Dimka's weapons he turned around to survey the group again and saw that two newcomers were standing with them. Horus was devastated at the loss of his comrades. He walked over to the fire and fell to his knees, cursing God for killing his only friends. He composed himself quickly when he felt a tap on the shoulder from one of the strangers. "Sorry to interrupt, but can you take us to Sakharov?" Horus looked up, seeing the blank eyes of a gasmask staring down at him from under a grey hood. He also noted the red armband on the man's right upper arm and the hammer-and-sickle patch on his left shoulder, noting him as a communist. Horus nodded, stood up and lead the pair to the scientist bunker. He lead them inside the bunker and said to Sakharov "Hey, new people for you." He then went over and picked up one of the three suits. "I want to give these back, my friends.....won't be needing them anymore, give me some cash instead." After the money was transmitted to his PDA he walked out of the lab and over to the fire where he changed into his new suit, put his trench coat into his pack, pulled the insulated hood up and gazed into the flames. Half an hour later the merc came up to him again. "Hello?" "What do you want?" The Merc explained that he and his friend were going into the X19 lab to find documents. Horus agreed on the grounds that he might find companionship on this journey and that the loot would be good. "I'll meet you back here at the fire in about half an hour." He ran to the bunker and opened his pack. "I need to sell this stuff and i want some upgrades" Pleased with his new upgrades Horus strode out of the lab he passed Globe and fired his AKSU at a nearby bottle, noticing that the improved accuracy and decreased recoil really made a difference. He headed back to the others and said "We'd better be going shouldn't we?" And with that the small group headed off for the factory that dominated the landscape of the Yantar area.

Durdan was not surprised when the sudden drone of an alarm and the sound of a large automatic weapon filled the air. He and Globe sprinted down the slope to the ecologists base and saw the chaos. Durdan didn't think, he just aimed and fired at the zombies which were shambling towards the camp, he saw a man in a trench coat ordering the others about and killing many. The merc assumed that this was the leader. A few minutes later and the fight was over and people set about looting corpses. Durdan thought that it would be prudent to follow the leader and talk to him about Sakharov. He and Globe found the man kneeling by a fire, his head in his hands. Durdan put his hand on the man's shoulder and said " Sorry to interrupt, but can you take us to Sakharov?" his voice was distorted by the gasmask but after a glance the loner nodded and started to walk through the camp. After introductions the stalker lead the pair into the bunker and brought them to Sakharov. "Hey, new people for you." the man said, walking over to the counter and taking a white suit from it. "I want to give these back, my friends....won't be needing them anymore, give me some cash instead." The loner then walked away, looking melancholy. "Well, what do you want young man?" The professor asked Durdan. "We want information on the X19 laboritory, quickly please, we're in a rush." "I will give that to you free of charge, providing that you do something for me. One of my friends was a researcher there, but he went missing several days before the second accident, i want you to find information about him." "Okay." Durdan replied. After a long explanation of the lab to them, Sakharov gave Durdan and Globe a map of the lab and sent them on their way, not before Durdan got rid of his excess stuff and asked for some upgrades. "I think that the stalker who we just met would be a good candidate to join us on our little expedition." Globe said as they walked out of the door. Durdan agreed and they set out for the fire that they had found the man at. He was sitting, looking into the flames. "Hello?" Durdan asked tentatively. The stalker looked around, he was in the white suit already, his trench coat nowhere to be seen, it looked like a regular sunrise suit, but its hood was lined with fur and it looked like it was insulated against the cold "What do you want?" the stranger said. "Do you want to join us?" "Where are you going.?" "On a dangerous mission, to the lab that housed the brain scorcher." The man considered for a moment, then said. "If there's good loot, i'm in." Telling him that he would meet Durdan back at the fire, the stalker rushed off to the scientist bunker.

Globe sold to Sakharov all the unnecessary equipment and got some upgrades for his suit. Then, when he came out, Durdan, Globe and Horus headed out of the main entrance and towards a large tunnel. The group was now a long way away from the lab and was heading through the tunnel towards the factory. Then, when they reached the end of the tunnel, they saw a large group of zombies heading towards them. "Shit!" said Globe "What we gunna do? There's three of us and about six of them!" "We take the fight to them" said Horus cocking his AKSU. "I agree" said Durdan "We're much more well equipped and agile than those empty shits" "Fine" said Globe "Let's move some boxes up here so we have at least some decent cover". In two minutes, before the zombies took a step inside the tunnel, the barricades were set up and the stalkers were all up at their positions. Then Globe fired the first shot, it hit a zombie in the head, but it carried on walking just more angry. And after that Durdan and Horus opened up with assault rifle rattle. The zombies were pouring into the tunnel now firing from the hip at the barricades. Every single bullet was hitting them because of the narrow tunnel and all of the zombies crammed in it. Three of the six zombies were lying dead now, but the rest was at their closest to the barricades. Globe aimed at one's head and pulled the trigger thrice. The zombie's head exploded and it fell dead, then Durdan took out a grenade, pulled the ring and threw it at the crowd. In a few moments the grenade exploded and all zombies bar one were lying dead, their faces and other body parts messed up by the grenade and the heavy gunfire. When the last zombie was quickly dealt with the group got out of cover and began looting them. When that was done they left the tunnel and came to a small fire. There were three dead bodies by it, fresh and not zombies. One was wearing a trench-coat and the others were in stalker suits. On close inspection Globe realized that they didn't have any wounds and probably died from an emission. Globe inspected the trench-coat and thought it was fit for use. He pulled it off the man and put it on over his Wind of Freedom suit. Then after he finished looting the man and his friends have as well they stood up and headed for the factory complex. They entered old rusty gates and, guns at ready, began to slowly walk towards the road to Red Forest. Thanks to a group of loners not so long ago the machine in the factory did not emit such devastating to the mind psy-waves, but zombies still managed to appear in big quantities here. While they were passing by one of the factory building Globe realized that he had some stash around here so he checked his PDA and discovered that he had a stash in the building next to him. Globe told his buddies to wait and then moved up to the third floor of the factory. He walked down the corridor and into the furthest room, there was a half buried safe there. Globe walked to it and opened it with a kick, inside there was a loaded RPG with three extra rounds for it.(this is in the game so I'm not making up or anything). Globe put everything in his pack, but the rockets didn't quite fit so they were sticking out and swung the RPG around his back and then went back down to his friends. Then they got back on their route to Red Forrest. They were close to the road marked on their PDAs and then, when they looked around the corner by an old irradiated truck and another small fire, there was no zombies! That was very strange for these places but at least they could pass quickly without too much hassle. They went out of the factory through another set of rusty gates and were on their way to the Red Forest.

Horus followed the other two out of the camp. He was wary of his two companions, they had not proven themselves worthy of his friendship just yet. His thoughts then wandered back to his dead friends. There had been eight of them at the start, eight ex-soldiers under his command. Eight men who were so devouted to him that they followed him through blood and fire. Eight men who he had failed. Alexandr fell first, gored in the stomach by the largest boar that Horus had ever seen, he had died clutching at his entrails and crying for his mother. Then Aleksei and Arkadi had been killed by those bandits. A week after that Dorofei and Evegni walked into the burner field. Their screams had been so terrible that Horus ordered them shot to spare them from the pain. When they had gotten to Yantar, Sakharov sent them to the old factory to recover a PDA from a missing stalker team. Kasimir had fallen under the spell of a controller and Horus had been forced to shoot him. Now none remained. Horus snapped out of his reverie when he heard a loud curse from globe. He looked up and saw six figures shambling through the tunnel ahead, straight towards their small group. "What we gonna do? There's three of us and about six of them!" Globe said desperately. Horus cocked his AKSU. "We take the fight to them." "I agree, we're better equiped and more agile than those empty shits." "Fine." Said Globe, looking more like he wanted to run away than fight. "Let's move some of those boxes over here so we can at least have some decent cover." Two minutes later the group had made a small barricade of boxes and were crouching behind them. Then Globe popped up from cover and fired at the leading zombie. The shot hit the thing right in its forhead, making a sizeable hole. But the empty shell just let out an angered moan and continued walking. Durdan and Horus then started firing as well, the old soviet mechanisms on their assault rifles making the distinctive AK series rattle. Horus shot one of the zombies ten times in the head and then emptied his magazine into the thing's torso. As he ducked down to reload Durdan shot a zombie clean through its head, felling it. "One shot, one kill." The merc said. Three of the zombies were dead on the tunnel floor now. Globe took out another with three shots too its head. Then Durdan undid one of the grenades from his belt and threw it at the zombies, shouting "Get down!" When Horus looked back over the makeshift barricade he saw a zombie feebly struggling to get back up despite its missing leg. He put it down without a second thought. When they had finished looting the zombies they proceded through the tunnel, wary of more hostiles. When they got out into the sunlight they were greeted by three dead bodies, one wearing a trenchcoat. Strangely they had no wounds so Horus assumed that they had died in an emission. He went over and looted one of the corpses, then stood guard as the others took their share of the loot. They then continued on to the factory where Globe wandered off to find a stash. Horus took this opportunity to find out more about the mercenary. "What brought you to the zone merc?" He said, leaning against an old crate. "I was contracted by someone to get secret documents. I had a team and everything but our helicopter flew into an anomaly in the military warehouses. You could say that Globe saved my life." At that point Globe came back with an RPG in his hand and three extra rounds poking out of his pack. "Let's get going then." Durdan said. After a few close shaves and false alarms, the small group made it through the Yantar factory and started on their way to the red forest.

The group entered Red Forest at about midnight. They were walking down an old road and past a bus stop. They had to climb over an old, fallen tree but that was no problem at all. They came to a turn and hesitated for a bit. There was a gate to the right of them which seemed to lead into the Forest. Instead they decided to turn left and follow down the road. Through the darkness they could not see further than a few meters ahead of them. Suddenly the sky went up flaming red and the ground beneath them began to shake violently. "Shit! An Emission! Run!" shouted Globe over the rumbling sound. The group began to sprint forward and ran past a two story tower but kept running on. Then they saw a tunnel before them and sprinted straight in. When Durdan ran in last he slammed the door shut behind him and locked it. They slowly went down deeper into the destroyed tunnel and found the best place for a camp. Whilst the others were putting down their stuff Globe went to explore the tunnel and smash some wooden crates for fire wood. He discovered that the tunnel was quite small. When he came back the Emission hit. His vision blurred and he dropped the fire wood he had gathered. His back began to ache and he collapsed to the floor. He could not hear himself or anything around him. Through his blurred vision he saw Durdan fall to his knees clutching his head, but Horus was still standing not seeming to be as affected by the emission, he only was holding his head with one and leaning against the wall with the other hand. Then, after a few moments, the emission seemed to 'cool down' and Globe's head and back began to get better. When the emission finally ended the group got their feelings back and set up the fire. "The monsters are gunna pour out of the Forest now, I don't know why but the emissions drive them crazy and they start to run from the centre back to the borders. We wouldn't wanna get in the way of that rush." said Globe staring into the fire. Durdan hesitated for a moment and then said "We should be near the Merc base, maybe they'll let us in." Globe thought about his friend's words and replied "That's a good idea. But I wouldn't wanna come too close in case they will be like the ones we met...". "Well then we'll do that tomorrow and now let's get some sleep, I'll do the first shift." said Globe and his companions lied down and fell asleep. Then after a few hours Globe woke up Durdan and they switched, now Globe took his place by the fire and fell asleep in minutes. Globe didn't see the rest, but it was not so important, Horus was woken up by Durdan and took his shift whilst Durdan fell asleep back where he was a few hours ago.

Durdan Vidic woke up bright and early the next morning. He opened his eyes, blinked, yawned and got up. His head still hurt from the emission the night before. He woke Globe and the pair made breakfast. Once Durdan had finished eating he went over to replace Horus so that the stalker could eat his fill. When the others finished they gathered up all the useful materials and headed out of the tunnel. Durdan walked towards the tower that they had passed the night before in their headlong rush to escape the emission. He made sure that he stayed on the opposite side to the crumbling wall that surrounded the Red Forest. The trees were swaying slightly in the wind and the darkness beneath their bows seemed to be watching them. When the trio reached the tower Durdan stopped and turned to Globe. "Can you climb up that tower and watch out for enemies, give us covering fire if things get hairy. If you see anything strange message me with your PDA." Globe nodded and walked into the tower, his footsteps clanging on the metal grating. Durdan and Horus continued on towards the bridge. It had once been a grand piece of architecture, its sculpted pillars made out of white marble. All that was gone now, eaten away by the deathly torrent of the river below. The central span had fallen into the waters but someone before them had managed to haul some bridging equipment down from the dead city and lower a narrow footbridge across the chasm. Durdan and Horus slowly and carefully crept across the bridge, guns raised and ready for an ambush. When they got across Durdan pulled out his PDA and messaged Globe. -I think its safe to come across now but don't take any chances- Before long Globe was by their side. Durdan looked around and saw a black ominous looking tunnel ahead of them. The way to Limansk he thought. The group continued through the tunnel and arrived in the city about half an hour later. ______________________________ Horus blinked as his eyes got used to the sudden light. He was happy to be out of the tunnel, although he did not like the look of this place either. He could hear the faint sounds of gunshots in the near vicinity and Durdan seemed to want to go in that direction. A while later they found the source of the noise. A small squad of mercenaries was attacking a house. The house had a heavy machine gun mounted on the top floor balcony and that seemed to be giving the mercs a lot of trouble. Two of their number lay dead in the street. A voice came over their radios. "Hey, you stupid shits, get into cover or you'll be shredded by that machine gun." The group ran behind some boxes just as the gunner saw them and started firing at them. "Good, now you need to help us. We've been pinned down here for more than half an hour and we haven't been able to do anything about it. There is a side door opposite you in the house, we need you to go in there and clear it out. We'll distract the gunner long enough for you to get in, the rest we leave to you." Horus peeked over his cover to see one of the mercs give a thumbs up sign and then start to fire at the house. Horus sprinted for the side door, Durdan and Globe following close at his heels. They reached the wall quickly and stacked up against it. Horus was in the lead with his AKSU, a gun specially adapted for just this kind of operation. Horus kicked the door open and sprayed the room with assault rifle fire, emptying a whole clip. He reloaded and looked around, no one was left so they continued upstairs, clearing that out as well. Horus went alone up to the top floor and aimed at the gunner, shooting him in the head and tossing him off the balcony. He then went out and waved at the mercenaries who were cheering. Fifteen minutes later the group had taken the lion's share of the loot and Durdan was talking to the mercenary leader. "We better take you back to base, the city isn't safe and it looks like the monolithians are gearing up for another assault. Follow us." The mercenaries then lead them through the dead city to the compound that was their base. Horus found: AK74x2 IMI Galil x2 L85 1000 rubles Durdan found: LR-300 AN-94 x2 AK74 700 rubles

After the fight, the rest of the group talked to the Mercs while Globe looted the bodies. He ignored anything rather than PDA's, he knew a long and a very hard journey awaited them, so he didn't wanna get bogged down with weapons. He was in the building looking out to how the rest of his group talked to the Mercs. He preferred to stay inside as long as he could, the cold wind outside was brushing the snow off the ground and throwing it at the people. Globe buttoned his trench-coat and put up the hood, he was getting very cold, the hood was heavy with the snow caped all over it. Then the group started moving. Globe rushed out of the building and followed them close behind. Walking through the old, but well preserved town of Limansk he noted that there wasn't too much mutants around. Not surprising keeping in mind the snow and the bitter weather that the Zone prepared for it's inhabitants. Trudging through the knee-deep snow was hard and tiring, so by the time the group got to the place the Mercs were leading them to Globe was nearly worn out. They were standing before a large grey building, which was supposedly the Mercenary compound. Windows shut, guards all around, and a locked firm looking door made the place look like a fortress more than an ordinary house. The Mercs were leading the group with Globe walking a few steps behind everyone, they went up to the door and the Mercs knocked, in a few moments the door was unlocked and both groups were greeted by the seemingly hot air pouring out. Everyone rushed to get in and when Globe crossed the doorstep, the door slammed shut behind him. They were led through the long corridors, past many rooms full of Mercs, towards the local bar. It was a cozy, but somewhat small room. The group was lead over to the biggest table and was greeted by some bottles of vodka.

While the others were finishing their vodka, Horus got up from the table and looked around. Mercenaries sat at tables all around them, drinking, playing cards or just talking. Some of them gave him hostile glares as he got up and Horus got the feeling that they didn't trust him at all. He walked over to the mercenary guarding the door, but before he could ask his question the merc said. "If you're looking for Cherkesov, he's across the hall, through that door there." He pointed to a heavy oak door which looked much out of place in this compound of metal and stone. Horus thanked the guard, crossed the hall and knocked on the door. A rasping voice called from within. "Come." Horus opened the door and wandered inside. Instantly he was shocked by the amount of high quality weapons and armour and also the amount of technology lining the walls. An elderly man in a blue suit stood in the center of the room and he looked at Horus. "You have the look of a military man, but that doesn't concern me. I presume you're here to trade...I'm Cherkesov by the way. What do you call yourself?" "Horus." "Then let's get down to business my good man." After their business was done, Horus walked out of the trader's 'office' and back to the bar. His friends were gone, so he ordered something to drink and sat down at a table to wait. Horus sold:

Globe didn't feel like getting drunk or even drinking at all. He stood up from the table after Horus went out and exited the bar area. Globe went through the corridors he walked up a few minutes ago and saw the metal door through which he entered the compound. Instead of going out that way he took a turn and went through a number more corridors. He then exited through another door to the opposite side of the base. It was cold, but thankfully, not windy. The snow on the ground was untouched. Globe sat down on a pile of concrete slabs. He took out his PDA and studied the route him and the rest of the group was going to follow to get to the lab. It wasn't going to be an easy job, but they were going to be very well paid in case of success. He looked up from his PDA again and put it away. Then he took out a cigarette and a zippo. He lit the cigarette and took a deep drag. His zippo was still opened, but his hands were very shaky from the cold and he dropped it to the ground. The moment he reached down to pick it up a bullet hit the wall where his head was moments earlier. Without standing up straight, Globe did a barrel roll behind a chest high concrete wall and took cover. He looked over and saw movement in the windows of the building straight ahead. Looking through the rifle scopes, the loner saw a sniper in a monolith suit. Globe pulled the trigger twice and the bullets entered the window, but they missed. More shots came from another window and another, they were hitting the wall behind which Globe was sheltering. The loner tried to get as low as he could so the bullets won't have got him when he was changing weapons. Globe pulled out his RPG and threw it up on his shoulder. He reached out of cover and aimed at the building the Monolith fighters were in. He aimed and pulled the trigger. The rocket flew just off target and into the wrong window, but the damage was still sufficient. The explosion destroyed the walls of the room and made it easier for Globe to see his targets. The loner loaded the RPG with the next rocket and shot at the bottom floor. The rocket hit a big bunch of explosives. The explosion was indeed huge. Globe couldn't hear anything for a few moments the explosion was so loud and deafening. When he looked back out of his cover he saw that half of the building the Monolith fighters were taking cover in had collapsed. Three or four left over enemies were already out of the other side of the building, retreating out of the Dead City towards Limansk. Globe put away the RPG and cocked his SVT. A big group of Mercenaries poured out of the HQ armed to the teeth, ready for an attack. They saw Globe looking around the ruins of the building, looking for some supplies or information, but the bodies were under too much rubble. He could only see a hand sticking out from under the concrete clutching a deformed sniper rifle. Only when everything was double checked and everyone was sure it was safe to come back inside did they go in. Globe explained to the Mercs what happened and they briefly thanked him. It was unclear to everyone how the Monolith group managed to sneak through the Merc outposts, but somehow they did. That night the guards were on full alert and the amount of the watch was also much higher than usual.
