Jurgen laughed. "The dumb bastard shot at us because we wouldn't lower the drawbridge. My men shot back while I watched. Seth and his companions obviously wanted to talk to the boss, but with the ruckus they caused, they won't be coming into our base any time soon." He changed into his new suit and sat back down. Although he was armed, he was still a prisoner.
He was still as the medic worked on patching up the few injuries he'd gotten from the few bits of rebar that had penetrated his armored exoskeleton. "I handed a flash drive over to Seth with a message from the boss for him, I don't know what was on it, but I was told it was important. That was shortly before our shoot out," he explained, feeling like he was letting on a little too much. "I don't know what else or who else you can expect in Yantar, might be some zombies in the factory, but the loner camp in the east usually deals with them," he explained, remembering leaving a couple of medkits behind for Sparrow and his squad.
"A guy who looks like he was in a stove...?" Jurgen asked, blinking. "Don't know anything about anyone like that. I remember passing a pack of mutts on the way to the Burner tunnel, but I didn't see anyone other than Seth and his group and Nail and his gang..." he paused, looking past Rurik and past the now ruined construction. "That reminds me, it may interest you to know that Nail's bunch is waiting to ambush anyone that made it past my group. Your medic killed Nail, but command got turned over to me," he explained.
"I suggest you give me a radio so I can tell them to hold their fire," the Merc explained, smirking.

((hate to be pedantic, but it was Victor that killed Nail, and Nail who killed the corporal. Not that it makes much of a difference, besides the corporal being dead.))
Victor finally applied the last bandage to the mercenary's bruised frame. The man had gotten off remarkably lightly, considering he had been buried under several tons of concrete. "All done!" the loner exclaimed, "mind you the cuts and bruises will hurt for a while, but they should go away soon enough."
Leaving the mercenary to his own, he took to examining the remains of the mercenary squad. The snipers that were trapped on the roof when the building fell had been quickly disposed of, and their gear was left largely intact. Without much thought, Victor made a quick search of the bodies for artifacts, finding three droplets and two fireballs on various bodies. Evidently, the men had walked through some sort of burner anomaly zone.
Lutiy kept quiet, examining the captured merc from aside. Something was amiss, the bandit thought. Naturally, the man seemed preoccupied with his own safety, but his appearance here was certainly of Seth's doing, as was the attempted ambush. Whether the mercenary was lying or not, Lutiy placed little faith in his words. Only four Dutiers remained in the group, including Rurik, the two brothers, and the sergeant with the PKM. The rookies had done a spectacular job of staying alive so far, the bandit thought. But whatever was waiting for them at Yantar was going to be no picnic.

Picking up the injured Dutier and slinging the man over his shoulder, Harmund carefully made his way down the ladder, jogging over to Victor. Victor had just finished patching up one of the surviving Mercs when Harmund set the injured man carefully down on the ground. "He's hit bad." Harmund said, "Several chest wounds and one in his left arm, I did what I could during the fight, but I don't think it was enough, I didn't get a chance to check for exit wounds while I was patching him up." Looking up from the injured sniper, Harmund could see Sigbrand picking his way around the chunks of rubble on the remaining part of the top floor.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Walking over to the two snipers he had killed, Harmund knelt down next to the closest one. The 7.62x54 round had almost torn the man's neck in half, but to Sigbrand's amazement, there was only a small puddle of blood next to the corpse. Flipping the dead merc over, he searched the body. After placing the man's weapons, a Scoped LR-300 and a Browning HiPower and discarding the PDA, Sigbrand padded down the corpse, feeling a bulge in the merc's vest, he cut it open and out fell a fist sized slimy lump with a few ridges and protruding edges. Wrapping the artifact up in a fragment from the dead Merc's vest, he placed his prize in his pack.
The other merc's weapons had fallen and been crushed by a block of concrete, the same with the mercenary that Harmund had shot. Checking the body of the semi-headless merc Harmund found little of interest but a glowing red sphere. He had seen Victor walking away with one, and wrapped it up in another fragment of vest for Harmund. [CHECK]

Rurik looked at the merc as he spoke, Another ambush? Between here and Yantar there isn't many hiding spots for them. "Here are they located? How many, and what are they armed with?" Rurik continued his questioning, he knew in the back of his mind they were probably going to miss Seth, and anyone else who was involved in whatever business had drawn him there. "Also, are there any mercs lingering in Yantar?" Rurik added.
"What business does Freedom and your faction conduct?", he looked at the group who were standing waiting for a sign of moving on, "Anything you'd like to add Kirill?" Rurik asked looking at the Bandit who was looking around rather impatiently. Rurik looked at his injured soldier, he was breathing in grasps. "Is there anything you can do for him Victor?"

"Ain't much more I can do, boss," Victor replied, shrugging "his lungs got hammered pretty hard, so it'll take a while to heal fully. He's got a full belt of endurance boosters though," he pointed at the shimmering electro artifacts hanging from the Dutier's midriff "He should make it through just fine, just give it some time." he concluded.
Lutiy watched as the sun dipped into the horizon, bathing the sky over the Zone in a reddish orange light. Somehow, he thought, the sunsets over Rostok were always the best.
"We should stop to rest," he addressed Rurik "doubtlessly it'll give our enemies more time, and although I'll take this guy's word for granted." he motioned to the mercenary "But the last thing I want is to go through more merc territory under the cover of dusk and night. Most of our group doesn't have night vision, and who knows what kinds of beasts we'll find in the darkness on the road ahead to Yantar, not to mention Seth could easily set up some kind of an obscure trap for us we won't be able to see."
Lutiy knew the latter point to be null. From his experiences with Seth, he learned that the Freedomer could set up a devious trap just as well in broad daylight as in the darkness. "Besides, the rookies need their rest after such a wearisome day of fighting for their lives, no doubt." he added, hoping to convince the Dutier.

Rurik sighed, Lutiy was right, he had not had a proper rest for 5 or 6 days. "Ok we'll stop for a few hours, we'll have to find somewhere less open, or we'll never be able to guard ourselves." Rurik helped the injured sniper to his feet. "Well Jurgen you have two options, hand your weapon over for now, and remain here or you go, and take your ambush with you." Rurik stated bluntly. He waited for the mercs reply. The two Duty soldiers went to check the area for somewhere secure to stay.
The Sergent and the freshly patched up sniper came back from scouting around, "Sir, we can stay at several places, the house nearby can be accessed easily, the electro tunnel all the rodents seem to have been cleared recently, or in the railway car just beyond that wall there, they can be guarded by 1 or 2 men." Rurik nodded "Anyone have any preferences?"

Jurgen laughed and looked at the Dutier. "I guess remaining a prisoner isn't all that bad... at least for now..." he said, unholstering his pistol and tossing it at Rurik's feet along with with rifle. "I expect those back in the morning..." he sighed, getting up and looking past the Duty soldiers again. I should still contact them... but then again... he thought, pausing, his gaze falling on the ever present fog from the Burner tunnel. They're as good as dead... he thought with a smile.
"I personally recommend the camp sight just beyond that wall," he said, pointing toward the abandoned railcars opposite the ruins of the construction. "It's relatively easy to defend and difficult to sneak up on," he explained, drawing a few suspicious looks from the other members of Duty gathered. "If I was really trying to lead you into a trap, do you think I'd be so obvious about it?" the Merc said, rolling his eyes.
-----
Chaos was on his feet immediately following Jurgen's statement. Without any prompting from the remaining Dutiers, he moved swiftly and silently toward the campsite the Merc had pointed out. Quickly, he scouted it before returning. "He's right, Rurik, I don't see anyone trying to sneak up on us without our knowledge," he said, drawing a smile from the prisoner.

"Electro tunnel?" Lutiy raised an eyebrow "doesn't sound too inviting..." he mused. "If it really is safe, we can split up. The sergeant and I can guard our mercenary friend by the railcar as he suggested, while the rest of you folks can take the house. Besides, that car and campground isn't big enough for all of us. I don't want this guy near the rest of the rookies, and neither do I fully trust him." he took a slight pause, thinking of the defensive arrangements "We'll be closer to the road to Yantar, so if this guy tries to call a few of his friends in here, he'll be the first to go down." Lutiy finalized, "You can take care the rest of the squad at the house while we stay here, right?" he asked the Duty leader.
There were less than eight hours remaining until sunrise, the bandit thought. Eight hours was preciously little, and, at the same time, far too long...
Victor slowly walked back to the house near the construction site. The structure was intact, and could easily accommodate eight or more people.
"Kirill's right," he announced "It'll be safer to leave him and the sergeant force by the railcar guarding the mercenary so that'll they'll also be able to stall any attackers and give the rest of us some time to prepare." He looked Rurik over "You look like total crap, and need some rest, especially if we're going Freedom hunting tomorrow, and so do the rookies. I suggest we have one or two stalkers on watch by the railcar while everyone else gets their sleep." he looked around, no one seemed particularly up for the task.
"I'll take first watch." Lutiy stepped forward. "I can deal with a few hours of sleep less a week. The rest of you," he looked around the group "need to settle down. I want everyone fresh for battle tomorrow morning. We've got a force of mercs and Freedomers up ahead to deal with."
Motioning for the mercenary and Duty sergeant to follow, he made his way towards the boxcar, leaving the rest of the squad by the house.

Rurik nodded his head in agreement "The only way into the house is through the roof or kicking a window in, set your PKM to cover the road Sergent, if anyone comes, do what you need to ensure they don't make it here." Looking to Jurgen, "I'm sure you have no problems with this arrangement?" He watched as the 3 moved off.
Turning Rurik motioned for the rest of the group to follow flicking on his NV he examined the windows into the house, one was broken outwards, pulling the remaining bits of wood out of the way he climbed in, "Wait here." There was some radiation lingering in the area, checking each room he settled for a largish room, that could easily accommodate the group, it was easily defended due to the single door way leading in, and boarded up windows.
Poking his head out the window, "Alright, come in." He waited till the group was inside and settled, "Two people keep guard, swap after each hour. I'll take the first 2 hours myself. Have something to eat and get some rest." He stretched and got comfortable, he checked his PDA, no activity registered. All quiet, finally. Rurik thought.

Harmund and Sigbrand followed Rurik through the window, and sat down in one of the corners of the room. Propping his rifle where he could easily reach it, and placing his MP5 on his lap, Sigbrand pulled out a small loaf of bread and tore it in half, handing half of it to Harmund. "Thanks." Harmund said, and returned his attention to the door.
Sigbrand leaned back against the wall and closed his eyes. He would've played his Violin if there weren't potential enemies around every corner in this damned place. With his hand on his sub-machinegun, Sigbrand quickly fell asleep.

All quiet, finally, Lutiy thought, perfect...
It had been two hours or so since he, the Dutier, and the mercenary had settled down in the car, out of sight of the rest of the squad. As the last coals in the small campfire died out, the sergeant continued his vigil over the road bend ahead. The mercenary, having nothing more to do, sank into sleep in the corner of the rail car, or at least pretended to do so.
Lutiy checked his PDA once more. There were no signs of life in a radius of kilometer aside from the group, and the fatigue was already beginning to show on the man by the window, as his head drooped lower and lower onto the stock on his weapon.
The bandit gave a crackling laugh. "So much for the arrangement, sergeant!" he said good-naturedly "You're hardly awake, you know. Even if someone decides to step foot into our line of fire, you're probably going to fall asleep with your finger still squeezing the trigger." He walked over to the window, looking outside. "Look, there's no one in the radius of nearly a mile, and I doubt anyone will decide to pay us a visit at night." he reassured the man, who was looking at him questioningly "if someone comes into the area, I'll wake you up myself. So get some sleep, you'll need it. We're going to have a whole lot more problems tommorrow, I fear." he chuckled inside at his last statement. It just couldn't be more true.
"Alright, fine, Kirill, you old bastard..." the sergeant grumbled "but if you fall asleep on the post, Rurik will take your head off for sure, and probably mine as well." With that, the Dutier retired to the other corner of the boxcar, removing his exoskeleton and PKM to settle down more comfortably.
Lutiy settled into position by the window, staring intently at the road. Out of the corner of his eye, he took quick sneak peeks at the Dutier in the corner. After several minutes, genuine snores could be heard from the direction of the sergeant. Lutiy quietly got up and walked over to the man, making sure he was asleep.
Once he was certain that no one in the area was watching, he drew his Beretta, walking over to the mercenary in the other corner. Bending down to the man's level, he pressed the barrel of the gun to the mercenary's temple.
"Yes." he whispered, as the mercenary woke instantly "that's a gun. Now, let's walk outside into the yard very, very quietly. It's about time we had a little chat."

With a sigh, Jurgen leaned back against the aging wall and closed his eyes. No sense in not getting at least a little rest... he thought, folding his arms across his chest. In a way, the Merc felt defeated, his entire team had been wiped out by Duty and some loners, his exoskeleton had been ruined, and his heavy machine gun had been totaled. He heard a vague conversation beyond the realm of his conscious mind, but paid it no mind.
Jurgen didn't know how long he was out, but someone pressed the tip of a handgun to his temple, waking him instantly. Normally, he would have shot the man, but given that his handgun and rifle were in the hands of a Dutier, he wasn't about to argue. He stood and followed, feeling more like a prisoner than having willingly surrendered out of convenience.
"Well, bandit, what do you want? You were there, I haven't got anything of value to steal," he explained, his hands up as he stood outside in the dim moonlight.

Lutiy slowly walked the mercenary outside, then quickly slid his sidearm back into its holster. He sized the mercenary up in a quick fashion, it was time to stop taking advantage of Rurik's hospitality, he decided. As a group, the raid would end nowhere. Seth would find out all too quickly if he was being tailed, and after that, there would be no catching him.
"I'm not here to rob you," he spoke to the merc. "Although," he smiled, eying the mercenary's shining artifact belt "those are pretty neat," he pointed to the glittering spheres. "Maybe some other time..." he concluded wishfully. "That doesn't mean I won't have someone else to rob tonight, but that's all for the greater good, of course." Ending this rambling tangent, he launched into the real reason he had dragged the merc out here. "You see, I have about as much desire to stay a part of this squad as you do. Yes, it was useful for getting past your blasted mercenary barricades, and fighting off mutants. But there comes a point when staying in a group of this size becomes... inconvenient, to say the least. Not to mention that our Dutier friends distrust me." He looked around, the sergeant's snores could still be heard from inside the rail car.
"I can get some decent backup gear to spare and free you, in return, you'll have to promise to lead me to the Dead City, which is no doubt where Seth is headed at this moment. I'd say it's a fair deal, considering you're eager to get back there yourself" the bandit offered. "We'll have about as much of a chance getting through Yantar alone as with an entire army by our side. You're an experienced stalker, so we should be off fairly well, and get to our destination quickly." the bandit fell silent, awaiting a response from the mercenary.

Jurgen considered for a moment before nodding in agreement. He would much rather be back with his companions instead of being the prisoner of a Duty patrol. "But what exactly do you plan to do with me? I don't have any weapons or armor to speak of at this point, you saw what Rurik had me do..." he grumbled, still kicking himself for letting the Dutier more or less rob him. "Or have you got something up your sneaky little sleeve?"
Admittedly, he didn't trust this man, but getting back to headquarters to make his report was more important at this point. He needed to report Nail's death and the destruction of the construction, that would put a serious damper on their presence in the area. "Fine, I'll go along with your little plan," he said with a sigh. "But if you betray me, I'm going to hunt you down and make sure you're Bloodsucker food," he warned, putting his hands down.
"So what's the first step? You got a stash of weapons and armor around here?" the Merc asked, glancing around in the darkness. "Or are you just going to give me a rifle and tell me to tough it out?"

Lutiy laughed "I knew you'd cooperate" he told the mercenary "as for the 'stash of weapons', well, I suppose you could say that." he glanced around before walking over to the fence behind the boxcar, pulling himself up. Glancing around, he could detect no movement. The house in the distance was dark and silent, although he knew someone was holding down the fort on active watch. He climbed back down. "We'll have to climb up the fire escape in the back and go around the building catwalk to get out of here. Rurik's boys will probably see us if we try to take directly to the road." he glanced back at the boxcar "in the meantime, wait here, I'm going to get you some neat armament." With that, the bandit quietly slunk back into the boxcar.
The sergeant awoke as he felt a tap on his shoulder. "C'mon, enough snoozing for now old man, you've got second watch." he heard Kirill's voice say in his ear. Without moving, the sergeant pulled his PDA from his belt as he checked the time. "What the hell... It hasn't even been three hours yet," the Dutier muttered as he turned, his eyes adjusting to the darkness around. "Dude, either raving or your PDA is malfunctioning," the sergeant heard Kirill reply "just look at mine, it's just two hours 'till sunrise." What the hell was going on? the sergeant thought, looking up, trying to get a clear view of the ex-Dutier through the gloom. The last thing he saw was a fist coming at his face through the darkness. Then his world went black as the impact sent him sprawling across the rail car's floor.
The bandit walked out of the rail car, hefting the sergeant's Duty exoskeleton carapace and physical augmentation system in his arms, and with a PKM strapped across his back. "grab those and prepare to get out of this place," he told the merc, dropping the suit and machine gun before his accomplice. He quickly tore off the red strips and Duty insignia from the exoskeleton's ventral plate "just put this thing on over your reinforced vest, you'll look just like any other mercenary. We can burn off the red paint job with an ember by the burner tunnel" he explained. Lutiy quickly climbed up the ladder of the fire escape and sat down on the catwalk, waiting for the mercenary to suit up. After finishing, Jurgen quickly climbed to the catwalk, his weight making the metal structure rattle slightly. The two crept around the side of the building, climbed down, and began to walk in the direction of Yantar. Jurgen/Lutiy subplotline cont'd in We Solemnly Swear We Are Up to No Good
