Karc listened, slight anxiety stirred as he heard of the garbled message, checking through his PDA he found a transmission had been sent.
Replaying it the message was in his voice, but the words were slurred and haltered, as if the act of speaking was a foreign act. The message went on for almost a minute. The moments after were greeted with a ominous silence as the three took in nonsensical message.
"Well..." Karc started, but was at a loss for words, "I guess that answers your question on who sent it."
With no desire to linger on the situation Karc quietly, got ready for the medical examination that, looking down at his heavily scarred and tattooed frame, leaning against a table he went along with the examination, it was more in depth with a lot of scanning using various machines that Karc had no idea what they did.
The tests went on, but Karc's mind went back to the message he'd sent, was it a distress call or a strange chance that he'd sent the message. Gut instinct told him that that perhaps part of his consciousness had been mentally aware of the situation he was in and had reacted in desperation. Forcing the thoughts from his mind he awaited any further parts of the examination.

Shade listen of the recorded mutterings of the Merc and was reminded of the video feed that he had recovered, it was all very disturbing. Both the video of the two shuffling around stiff and rigid and the guttered audio log of Karc seemly trying to relay their fate to the Mercenary HQ where so much like the zombies that roamed around pockets of the zone. As far as the bandit knew there was no cure for whatever caused stalkers to become those walking shells, some loners that had been overtaken by a controller could jump back if the best was killed fast enough maybe their's was such a cause.
The assassin now sat on the exam table, boots, suit , clothing and all other effects off to the side. He was glad that there was a curtain that had allowed some minute privacy. Tosya's wounds from his last mission where still fresh, a sign of weakness or an object of pity to others. Due to them he should have not embarked on this job, but pure greed had gotten the best of him yet again.
The women came in and began to run a the basic medical exam, her eyes spotted the track mark on his arm.
"I doubt that is from Anti-rad," Lisbet remarked in a low tone normally not one to make assumptions, " I don't care for the whys nor will I stop you, but I need to know what and for how long."
The Russian sighed deeply and covered his brow and eyes with a hand. The injection had been his dirty little secret for far too and he had hoped to keep that buried deep.
"12 mg Meth," he whispered, "last hit 47 hours ago, first relapse in ten years."
"Anything else?"
"No" ____________________________________________________
Lisbet noted the distress, disgrace and perhaps fear both of her patients showed, of course either would admit to the last. If she had her way she would have both as her lab rats to test and experiment on at her whim, however she would not compromise her position, nor their usefulness and the fact she had some minor biological attraction. She knew that despite the curious event that had befallen their brains, she would need their muscle and marshal abilities more. Not to say that either man was not intelligent, they where clever amongst the ranks of stalkers but academia they fell short. ____________________________________________________
She had finniest the preliminary test and x-rays with the bandit and had approved him for the second phase of the test, now it was on to her favorite stalker Karc.
"Tattoos, scares and long following hair are rather a common motifs here," the Asian remarked upon see the Merc without his attire, "I must say your ink is more impressive by far."
She began her exam and took her X-rays once more. She was surprised by both men, for persons who have had little in the way of professional medical treatment, past injurers had healed fine. Such showed they had a rudimentary understanding of medicine, netting some of her respect.
"Alright your cleared for the next set of exams," she remarked, "You may want to redress into your clothing, it will be a while before I need you."

Lisbet hated the mobile MIR, sure it was a marvel of modern engineering, but difficult to maintain and operate. It was beyond her how it was to be deployed into developing nations without a team of expert technicians to service it. However the zone called all kinds people; it would seem. Every clan in the zone had some kind of rare expert or masterful mechanic.
She called the bandit out first, she watched as he studied the large device before him. Fighting instincts to avoid the unknown, and go along with the exam.
"Try to maintain clam synchronized breathes and stay as still as possible," she said as he laid down on the bed of the MIR, "it will allow for a better reading."
The tall Russian said noting as the machine began it's scan, keeping to that she had said.
The Asian sat behind her laptop as images of the assassin's brain surfaced. Damages due to over use of drugs and alcohol over many years where abundant over the image ans made her inwardly cringe. Then she saw it, the brainstem was active as if during deep REM sleep.
"Shade?"she called to make sure that the bandit was still awake.
"What," was the response but the scan was still showing a sleep activity.
"Are you feeling any pain?" she continued.
"None," he said.
She continued the scan seeing changes in the parahippocampal cortex region. She concluded that the abnormalities there explained the memory loss. What ever was done to him was done at a much different wavelength then other Psy emissions.
She would have to confirm this with Karc's exam.

"I must say your ink is more impressive by far."
"Uhh, thanks." Karc commented quickly, glancing around at various charts and other items in the examination area.
Dressing and waiting for the next step of the process seemed to take longer than he thought, taking the time load extra magazines, sort his gear and repack it, making the weight more evenly spread.
Eventually he was called for, passing Shade as he went in he looked at the scanner and wondered how such a thing ever made it into the zone.
He followed the instructions of calm breathing and remaining still, as the procedure started and the scanner passed over his head, he felt a vague tingle, forcing himself to remain calm he kept his breathes slow and steady.

Lisbet watched the tall twin colored hair Merc take his place, noteing as the two stalker sent sparing glances as they passed each other. Shade making sure that his clothes cover his badges as he returned to his area. She gave the same instructions that she had given to the assassin, to her slight sadness the Merc remained calm. Unlike the Russian Karc had a glimpse of curiosity in his eye about the scanner before him.
"The scanner is here as a filed test, " she remarked as she waited for the images to boot up, "the Boston based researchers felt that the zone would the best place to test it to it's full capabilities."
"It's a shame that your college did't have that same curious spark as you," she continued still waiting for the images, "but persons indoctrinated into old soviet ways don't ask many questions."
"Unbearably part of my education included psychology, and I sometimes find myself read people, it's a curse really."
Finally the images appeared on her screens, the same center where active as in the Russian's brain as the Mercenary's, but something was off. Karc seemed to live a much less drug filled life as Shade but had a much thicker membrane layer then not only the assassin but anyone else she had ever scanned. However this was not the first time she had seen this abnormality, a stalker from the past had developed some kind of natural Psy immunity.
"Fascinating ...Karc..I think I can explain how you made that call now...I need to do a EEG just to test that theory." She stuttered, "I can't believe I might have discovered the second known case of Psy immunity."

"Unbearably part of my education included psychology, and I sometimes find myself read people, it's a curse really."
"I find it a boon in getting me jobs. After all, a closed mind means less chance for stumbling on to something valuable." Karc replied waiting for the scanner to complete it's job. "I intend to discover the secrets of The Zone. But that's a long term goal."
Falling silent again he waited as the scanner completed it's job and for Lisbet analysis the results.
After a brief wait she pipped up, with some enthusiasm.
"Fascinating ...Karc..I think I can explain how you made that call now...I need to do a EEG just to test that theory." She stuttered, "I can't believe I might have discovered the second known case of Psy immunity."
"Immunity?" Karc said, a tingle passed over his scalp at the news. "EEG, what's that? Sounds less than pleasant."
The last part of her sentence tweaked his interest as well.
"Who was the other?"

"The EEG , electroencephalogram," Lisbet remarked with a slight laugh, before rummaging about one of her crates, "I just have to place a few electrodes on your head and face, it is harmless it just reads electric impulses in the brain."
A few moments later she came up with a helmet like bed of round electrodes and presented it to him.
"You'll be far more comfortable then I, as you get to sleep," she continued, "I'll be up interpreting data. I'll send for bedding to be brought up here."
"-Who was the other?" Karc asked seemly as excited as she.
"-A man, Kirill Malygin or 'Lutiy' as he was known in the Zone,"she said, "he was rather famous as well a ruthless from what I'm told, he disappeared after a battle near the power plant almost a year ago."

Swift walked along the hall, under one of her arms she carried a roll of bedding. Sarah found it odd that; the Asian woman was given such special treatment from the big boss, especially after the incident up in Jupiter with the Mutant reagent. It would seem being level 3 didn't qualify her to know such information. More peculiar she had been asked by Mr. mysterious himself to escort the Bandit south. She had only an hour ago discovered that he had become the Kingpin of the Southern Bandits, and given her past history with the black hooded rats a very awkward assignment.
"Professor Fossen I have the item you request, " the female Merc remarked before, "also if you'er done running test I'd been ask to escort the bandit back to the South."
"Yes, very well he is no longer needed," Lisbet said, "I have far more pressing maters with your associate." ____________________________________________
After a long night of watching readings from the electroencephalogram the scientist compiled her data. In the dim light of the makeshift lab, she smiled the readings indicated true.

"Ahhh, of course..." Karc said, he knew the answer before he'd asked it but, was curious. He'd read up on the Bandit, he'd even traveled with his younger brother for a stint. "Slip of the memory."
Swift delivered the bedroll exchanged quiet words with Fossen before departing.
Karc was lost in his own thoughts thinking of possible use and advantages of this "blessing" he'd seemed to have developed.
Once the other merc had gone Karc took the bedroll and the strange monitoring device. Rolling out the bedroll he sat down and placed device on his head. Once it was fitted he lay back and closed his eyes, not feeling tired he let his mind wander, after several minutes he finally drifted off.
When he awoke hours later he looked around, Fossen was still watching over the reading, but her smile indicated the results were positive. Feeling rather pleased Karc suppressed the urge to smile, and asked in a inquisitive tone.
"So what's the next step? I don't to be stuck doing test after test in a lab."
