Sergeant was being held at gunpoint. He got one good look of the massive dutier.
Fucking bastard.
All of those bastards...He recognized some of the faces. They were all ex-army officers. He noticed a man in a blue kevlar suit. His face was vaguely familiar.
Then, something hit him. He knew the face. He recognized it.
Kirill mother-fucking "Lutiy". One of the most wanted men in the Zone. Sergeant heard about this man, as he was a pretty dangerous criminal. However, the Duty monster didn't seem to know about this.
Excellent.
He stood up, shaking off the dust, laughing. His men were in no shape to fight, he was in a nasty situation, but...He was still laughing.
"Excuse me, stalker" he said with a sarcastic tone in his voice, "but aren't you...Duty? Was it Duty? Aren't you 'Duty' fellows supposed to be protecting the people around the Zone? Why have you got the most wanted criminal in fucking Ukraine with you? And to think you were the 'good guys'... Look at you! Throwing off your uniform, just like that! You were once soldiers, good men! I used to work with you! Look at you! What have you got in here? Protecting criminals, walking around holding hands...Hah."
He spat out some blood and coughed loudly. Some Duty fellows lowered their guns, murmuring...Excellent. He continued
"You were here to protect the people from the Zone and look what you've done! You've decided to become criminals yourselves! Look at him! I've personally seen an entry about him! Former lieutenant, served for twelve years, one of the best sniper shots in the entire fucking army! He was going to be awarded a medal for his services! Look at you, stalkers...You disgust me."
Before anyone could do anything, the sergeant drew out his "Vikhr". A quick double tap...The dutier fell to the ground, both bullets still in his chest. With the blink of an eye
"Good bye, stalkers"
The sergeant shot himself.

Lutiy watched the Duty private fall. Before anyone could react, the bandit drew his Beretta, brought his arm around and put a round in the main pilot's head. The ex-Dutier quickly walked up to one of the remaining soldiers who was still standing, jamming the barrel under the man's chin.
"Maybe I'll have to reconsider going to Yantar thanks to you, officer" he ground out "how was the lab? The emitter still active? Well, it shows, at any rate."
He turned to the Duty squad about him. "What I find funny," he exclaimed "is that all this comes from a bunch of men who protect scientists who have just disengaged from an active link with Duty to work with guess who?" He dropped the snork head, lifting his sleeve to reveal the semi-burned Freedom wolf tattoo. "Criminal? Perhaps. But at least I have the guts to wear the mark openly instead of concealing it beneath another shade of green!" he pointed to the remaining soldiers.
"If I, as a soldier, had a choice, I would unhesitatingly walk down the road that every so called 'criminal' Dutier here has walked down instead of killing their compatriot stalkers without questioning orders." He pressed the barrel tighter to the military stalker's skin. "So tell me,how many rookies that met their end near the Cordon to 39mm rounds will I avenge right now, Mr. Righteous?"
Victor noticed Chaos sitting off to the side by the tunnel entrance. "You look like shit," he noted. The loner's suit was shredded, and he himself was bleeding from several gashes made by humanoid claw marks. Easy to fix, Victor thought, although a coagulative artifact would greatly help. "Here, let me patch you up." he told his friend "just hold still and I'll make it quick."
He pulled out his kit and began sanitizing the wound before bandaging it up. He pulled out his Meat Chunk artifact, cutting off several long strips. "Place them over the wounds when they stop bleeding. It should repair the tissue a tad," he instructed, giving the artifact bits to Chaos. Then he remembered something else. He pulled out the Berill vest, folded up in his pack. "Here," he said, holding the suit out "looks like your old suit isn't of much use anymore, and I don't need this one anyway now."

Chaos had felt foolish for getting himself attacked by a bloodsucker, but he had heard rumors of the legendary creatures singlehandedly killing off entire military patrols. With a shrug, he'd sat down near the mouth of the tunnel, watching one of the other loners and Victor risk the tunnel to reap the rewards. The wounds on his neck and lower jaw were slowly getting worse as the bloodsucker's saliva dissolved more of the flesh on his face and neck.
Memories of the dog attack from a few years back returned... He'd been outside at a park with some companions of his, playing Ultimate Frisbee. They'd spotted some stray mutt wandering the park and decided to see if it belonged to anyone. Chaos had volunteered to go check on it because it looked a little sick. As he approached, he'd been able to see bare patches in the surprisingly large dog's fur.
"You okay boy?" he'd asked. It turned and looked at him, bright silver eyes staring at him hungrily in the daylight. "Oh shit..." The large dog started charging him, leaping and colliding with him full force. It's sharp teeth locked shut across his lower jaw and the bridge of his nose and he could feel the bone growing in danger of giving way. There was a burst of gunfire and the large dog was dead. Chaos had been treated for rabies, mild radiation poisoning, tetanus, several minor fractures.
It occurred to loner as he sat there that the "large dog" that day had actually been a pseudodog... the treatment for radiation made more sense now as he thought about it. So... The Zone marked me... it willed me to come here... he thought, looking up when Victor approached him.
"Yeah... bloodsucker ambushed me..." he said, gritting his teeth against the burn of antiseptic and blood coagulants. He was handed several bits of a yellow artifact that he wasn't quite able to make out in the light of his torch, but he gladly took them. "Thanks Victor..." he said, forcing a smile. Chaos had missed his old friends from Warsaw at first, but his new companions in The Zone were quickly becoming like brothers to him.
The state of his vest was mentioned and he almost laughed. "You're right, it won't do me any good anymore," he admitted with a chuckle. He gladly took Victor's vest and stood and took off his old one, which he simply tossed aside. The deafening crack of thunder told him it had landed in a nearby electro anomaly. The Kevlar vest had been damaged beyond repair by the bloodsucker's claws, but it had absorbed enough of the damage to keep his beloved over shirt from getting ruined.

Rurik looked at the corpses, then back at Kirill, "Your Lutiy?" he asked in disbelief. "I'm in two minds here old friend. As that bastard said, your one of the most wanted in the zone, but you served Duty before that." He paused before continuing "Freedom is working with the scientists? How did you know that?"
Rurik turned back to the remaining soldiers. "Men prepare to fire, gentlemen if you don't tell me what you were doing, who lead you, and where that man is now, My men and I will shoot you. You have 10 seconds to start talking." Rurik warned pointing his PKM at one of the men.
He started to count "10, 9, 8..."

"Most wanted man in the Zone?"
Adder's green eyes seemed to glow venomously as she looked at Lutiy, her suspicious nature now in full throttle.
"I knew we shouldn't have joined them, who knows what he'll do? He'll stab us while we sleep...", she snarled. Maginot roughly took hold of her and dragged her away from the main group before she could embark on a paranoid road trip. He took her to the entrance of the underpass, still holding her firmly by the arms.
"-Adder, this is excessive." "-Excessive?! That guy is a criminal!" "-You don't even know what he did to have such a title", said Maginot calmly. Adder's eyes seemed to be boring into his head, if she had slits instead of normal pupils, she would look very reptilian, "just calm down and go easy with the venom."
Adder hissed in her usual way and lowered her gaze. Maginot almost felt an invisible weight lift off him as she stopped looking at him. He looked back at the group and saw they were still interrogating the soldiers. Adder breathed in deeply several times, breaking loose of Maginot's grip. "-I'm sorry...I have no control over this. And the fact he's a criminal didn't make it any better." "-How come?"
Adder took another deep breath before speaking. "-The Mafia is after me, I saw something I wasn't supposed to see and now they're trying to bump me off. I didn't come to the Zone for profit, I came here to hide." Maginot looked at Adder thoughtfully before answering. "-Not the best place to hide. There are bandits here, and they're bound to have ties with the Mafia." "-I know, but I thought I'd stand a better chance here than in the Big Land."
Adder fell silent, looking down at the ground and carefully avoiding Maginot's eyes. Maginot sighed slightly before saying: "-Everyone has a different reason for coming to the Zone, wether it be profit or something else. I came here to find a slightly more meaningful existence, but that's rather silly and poetic compared to your reason for being here." Maginot looked at Adder and saw her flash a venomous glance at Lutiy, but she was obviously trying hard not to let her suspicions and fears run away with her.
"-I'll be calm", she said finally, "I'll try to keep my suspicions under control, but I don't guarantee anything." "-That's very good", said Maginot with a smile before patting her on the shoulder, "you saved my sorry skin back in Cordon, and it wouldn't be good if we let each other down now. We're a team." The ugly light in Adder's eyes was completely gone, and she was smiling. "-Damn right we're a team", she said with a laugh.

Borisov could hear noise outside...The man who was in the helicopter seemed to be holding a soldier at gun point. He turned around, only to see Danilov unconscious. Wasn't he supposed to be...Wait a second...Where was the prisoner?
He could hear another shot outside. Leaning out of the helicopter, he saw the man executing a soldier...Bastard.
The sergeant was lying in a pool of blood, dead, next to a soldier in red...But, what was this? The men in red were murmuring, and he could hear their commander, a lumbering giant of a man, counting down...What the hell was going on?
____________________________________________________________________________
Limping, Burner managed to get away from the wreck unnoticed. The only thing he needed was a distraction, and that helicopter crash managed to give him just that. But, where could he go now? Vasily was still in Yantar, but...So was the captain. And he did not want to meet him again.
"I have nowhere else to go...I have to go and warn Seth of this!"
And then he bumped into a man. A soldier, to be precise. Captain Dimitri.

Out of the corner of his eye, Lutiy caught two of the loners edge out of the main group. He holstered his pistol, stepping away from the soldier. "Make no mistake, if I didn't have so many bodies on my hands already, I'd do it without any hesitation, but I think I'll leave it to Duty to figure out what to do with you pricks." He took a glance at Rurik, who was still counting down. "Your time's running out, folks. If I were you, I'd tell us everything you know, especially since Freedom's out there gunning for you too."
Pulling his hood over his head, the bandit walked off to the side from the group, seeing that his cover had already been lifted and further involvement in the mess would grant him little benefit. He stole a stealthy look at the two who had walked off from the group. Frenchie and the chick, he thought, and nearly broke out laughing when he saw the woman give him the evil eye. He resolved to teach the obnoxious rookie a lesson or two should they ever run into each other again, alone...
((slight time frame shift into the past))
As he was putting away his medical equipment, Victor heard two shots fired in rapid succession from the direction of the helicopter, and another, and then once more. Something told him that it was not Dutiers executing wounded snorks.
"Shit," he muttered, quickly stuffing the medkit into his pack and getting up "looks like Rurik and his folks can't go anywhere without getting someone killed." he said to Chaos, who was still sitting beside him "let's go see what's going on over there, they probably need our help."
With that, he started towards the clearing.
Taking care to make as little noise as possible, Seth climbed the rusting construction crane. He pulled out his binoculars as he reached the top of the corrugated structure, peering into the distance.
He could now clearly see the helicopter and its surroundings. Several bodies littered the ground beside it, the remaining soldiers apparently held at gunpoint by a group of no less than twelve loners and Dutiers. He noted the unmistakable seven foot figure of Rurik, the leader of Duty himself, several faces he had never seen in the Zone before, as well as a single trenchcoat-clad man, whom he could not identify due to a large hood covering the stalker's face.

"3, 2, 1." Rurik finished the countdown drawing out the moment, before simply giving his order "A poor choice. Duty, fire." a storm of bullets were fired into the soldiers who fell into a pool of red.
"If you rookies want to pick through those remains you can you probably won't find much." he said to the loners in the group, turning to Lutiy, "On the basis that I've known you for so long and served Duty, I'll excuse your previous actions for now. Was there anyone in the helicopter?" Rurik asked. If anyone else was alive they might be more willing to talk after seeing their companions dealt with. Turning back to his men, "Stay alert and keep an eye out, people will have noticed the smoke by now."

Leaning out of the bunker, Borisov nearly got his head blown clear off by a hailstorm of bullets. The remaining crew was executed..."Oh man...Run or gun? With my leg like this, the answer's pretty much clear."
He saw the stock of his RPK under the bunk he was lying on. He pulled it out. Two magazines left. He was going to make them count. He leaned out, firmly holding the grip.
"This one is for the sergeant."
He pressed the trigger...One, two, three...The Duty stalkers were going down like ninepins. The fire was a total shock...
"They must have thought they got us all...Well, here's where they made a mistake!"
____________________________________________________________________________
The captain? What the hell was he doing here?
"YOU! WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME? WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE? WHERE ARE MY MEN?"
Burner had anticipated the punch. Despite his leg, he managed to dodge the captain's fist and quickly pressed the barell of his USP against the captain's head. The cat and the mouse swapped their roles.
"Calm down, you maniac, or you'll get us both killed! What was that in the lab? Why did you try to murder me? What do you know about that thing? I'm holding the strings here, now talk!"
The captain turned around. The rage in his eyes had disappeared, but there was no fear. Just sanity. He seemed to have realized what was going on.
"Shoot me now, and you'll never know. You will be lost, for ever...You will be bound to Him."
Burner considered the option...Shooting the soldier would mean less trouble for both him and Seth, but on the other hand...That thing in his dreams was haunting him, day by day. He finally spoke
"Speak. Now. Talk!"
The captain hissed through his teeth
"No. Not now. After we rescue my men. Later."
Initially, he thought the captain was going to trick him, but, as he spoke, there was something determined in his voice...Could this man actually be speaking the truth?
"All right, they're over there, by the helicopter, pinned by Duty and some rookie stalkers. There was also another man, and, judging from what I've heard, he's a bandit and a nasty one, that's for sure. I'm coming with you! I'm not a big fan of Duty, that's for sure. I think your sergeant shot himself, or at least that was what the stalkers were murmuring. I don't know, I managed to sneak away without getting noticed by them...The boy who was shot in the leg is still in there, as well as his hyper-active friend. Not sure about the rest."
The sergeant was dead?" A good soldier, and a better man...".
"Follow me, and keep quiet. You are going to see how the Army treats traitors!"

Seth watched the gunfight unfold. The Dutiers opened fire on the remaining crew of the helicopter, only to receive an equal dose from a bunker across the clearing. He saw three or four Dutiers drop, the trenchcoat stalker dove into the wrecked helicopter. The remaining group managed to sprint into cover while their companions were shredded by the machinegun fire. In an instant, he realized the full firepower both sides were willing to pack and expend on achieving their goals, in which he was no doubt involved.
He pulled his PDA, and spoke, sending a message to the remainder of the Alpha Squad, who he hoped had managed to deal with the mercenaries' firestorm in the meantime. "Sokol, Thor, we have some serious shit going down here." Seth announced "Pripyat plan is delayed undefinitely, for now. I need you two in Yantar and quickly. I see a Duty expedition moving through Rostok, and things are no doubt going to get ugly." The Freedomer stopped abruptly, switching off the communications device. Panning the Wild Territory with his binoculars, he caught sight of two figures that he did not expect to see together...
Lutiy peered into the helicopter's trashed interior, searching for any survivors. So Rurik had decided to let him off of the hook? Truth to be told, the bandit did not expect the sudden amnesty, temporary as it may have been. It didn't make a difference anyway, he thought. It seemed that his stay in the group was about to come to an end. He didn't need to make any of his further intended exploits public to either the loners or the Dutiers, especially since the levels of trust in the group towards him seemed to be rapidly disintegrating.
He was about to exit the chopper when gunfire erupted. Dutiers began to fall right and left as the group scattered across the clearing to find cover from intense machine gun fire coming from a bunker not too far off. Lutiy dove back into the wrecked vehicle as bullets slammed into the metal all around him. He cursed as a round caught his arm in mid-leap, taking a sizeable chunk of flesh as it went through cleanly.
Sitting up inside the craft, he immediately pulled the Soul and Slug artifacts from his belt. He squeezed the disgustingly slippery and squishy Slug, which released a considerable amount of slime. He began applying the compound to his wound, wincing at the pain. Nevertheless, the injury almost immediately stopped bleeding. He then took the Soul, his single most prized possession, and cut off a small piece. Unlike the Meat Chunk, this organic matter was easily malleable, and resisted any form of infection through its sheer anomalous nature. he pressed the artifact piece to his wound, and it instantly shaped itself to fill the missing tissue, repairing nerve endings and re-connecting blood vessels underneath the skin as it changed its own structure. He pocketed both artifacts once more, and waited for the shooting to subside.

Chaos was glad he stayed near the entrance to the underpass, although he took up a defensive stance with his rifle to his shoulder, but not looking through the scope just yet. When the shooting stopped, he picked up a comm intercept on his PDA and pulled it from his belt, holding it to his ear.
Sokol... Thor... Seth...? Who are these stalkers? Are they bandits? What about Mercs, or Freedom...? he thought, finally standing up. "Is everyone all right?" he called, looking around. The loner looked around in shock. Most of the Duty squad was dead. He hoped Rurik was okay. He pulled out his PDA again and brought it up.
"Is everyone okay? Give a shout if you are," he said, kneeling near one of the dead Dutiers. He grabbed the dead stalker's PDA and picked it up, although it was ruined, a bullet had gone right through it.

Sudden machine gun fire from one side erupted dropping 4 Duty men quickly, bullets hit Rurik's plated armor, while not harming him, shocked a lot. Running to cover the firing stopped. From behind cover held his PKM aiming in the direction of where the firing had been he returned fire covering the area in bullets. Silence followed.
Chaos' PDA was asking if people were alright. Standing up and looking around he saw the stalker checking over his fallen men, all of his men had been killed or injured, walking over to the mess of bodies he replied "I'm fine, shame I can't say the same about my men." He took the RPG and Groza from one of his fallen. He looked about whoever had fired was either out of ammo, hit by the return fire or moving to get another shot. Cursing, he crouched next his Sergent who was bleeding badly from multiple wounds. "Hold on soldier we may be able to save you yet. Chaos where is Victor? CHAOS!" Standing up he saw Chaos looked puzzled, "What is it? You look confused."

The loner blinked. "I... I'm not sure where Victor is. I hope he's okay..." Chaos answered, looking around nervously before clicking his torch on. He saw that Rurik's armor was soaked with blood, but he looked all right. Sighing in relief, he pulled out his PDA and browsed through a couple of files, finding what he was looking for.
"Rurik, I picked up a comm intercept after the ambush," he explained, a little apprehensive about giving his PDA to someone else, but he had yet to find a reason to distrust Duty or their soldiers. "I think the guys in the message might have been responsible..." He handed the PDA to the large man and glanced around, trusting of the Dutier.

"Excellent...The gunfire stopped...Must have thought they got me...But I can't give up yet!
His thoughts were interrupted by a loud moan coming from the short man who seemed to be waking up
"Borisov, what the hell hapenned here?"
Without taking his eyes off the stalkers, Borisov responded
"Keep your voice down! They think we're dead! God bless this helicopter! In a nutshell, we got shot down by stalkers, the team's dead, the captain shot himself and I just had to kill four men. Anything else?"
Holding his head, Danilov tried to stand up. Head trauma was nasty, as he had remembered that quite well. He tried to find his AK..."Damn, where is that thing? I've got no weapons here..."
"You got a mag?"
Borisov responded, still looking down the barrel of his weapon
"Nope. I just wasted both mags on these bastards...Shit, we're basically screwed here." ____________________________________________________________________________
Burner was trying to keep close to the captain, who had sped up...He still didn't let go of the trigger, remembering what Cherkesov said about the Army..."They'll shoot you the moment you turn your back...Never keep your guard down.". Burner was still hesitating whether to believe the man...Was he really going to tell him about that dream of his? They came up to a clearing, behind the helicopter.
"Stay here, stalker. I'm going up there... I hate to say this, but watch my back."
Despite everything he had heard about the army, he decided to listen...How did a man like that end up in the army? And how did he know about his dreams?
"Captain, I sure hope you know what you're doing..."
The captain climbed the tower. He turned on his PDA. Two friendly signals and eight or nine unknown...Would this mean that only two of his men survived? He decided to try the communicator again.
"Dimitri speaking, over!"
Over in the helicopter, Danilov heard a noise from the back. Snooping through the debris, he managed to dig out his PDA. It was still intact, if a bit dented.
"Private Danilov speaking, state your orders, captain!"
Danilov! That devil was still alive!
"Danilov, quick, I'm reading another signal, who's communicator is it?"
Turning around, Danilov patted Borisov, who responded by nodding his head, still trying to figure out if he had actually hit someone.
"Borisov...The rest are dead. Captain, I'm picking you up on my PDA signal, as well as an unidentified dot right next to you...Must be a malfunction."
"You mean right behind you."
Both of them turned to see a gray-faced man holding pistols in both hands. Before they could speak, he interrupted
"No. Both of you. Shut up. I'm going to pull you out of here. Try to stay close to the bushes, they can't see you. Your captain is waiting by that water tower, o'er there. Don't worry, if you hear shots, run towards Yantar. From what I've heard, your suits can take a beating. Ugh, your leg! Then that was...Never mind. You can carry him, right?"
Danilov nodded...Even though Borisov was one heck of a man, he could carry him on his back without much trouble.
"Oh, and, before you go, I have to tell you...You're on your own. Your army ain't responding. The captain just got a 'fuck you' sort of signal from the base and he nearly broke his neck trying to climb down. I'm suggesting you head over to Yantar now! And, please, could you ask your captain to apologize to the scientist? That shot wasn't very kind of him. Now go!"
The men disappeared into the bushes. Burner knew it was time. He got out in the open, still limping.
"OI! STOP YER SHOOTING!"

Taking the PDA he saw the Seth's name immediately, "Shit, Seth is in the area somewhere." he had probably seen the entire fight, looking around Rurik knew Kirill would be interested in that info, he held his PDA next to Chaos' and copied the file. Handing the PDA back, he checked his own PDA, 2 almost silent beeps indicated that 2 stalkers had entered within it's detection range.
Squatting down and checking the Groza he had just picked up. Before he could move out to investigate the newcomers someone was fired, which was followed by someone shouting 'OI! STOP YER SHOOTING!'. "Stay here , try to contact Victor and the others. I'm going to check on whoever that is." Rurik said to Chaos before moving towards the voice, standing in the open was a man who looked like he had burns to his entire body. His skin was a ash gray, he was limping also. "Stop where you are stalker." Rurik ordered "And state your business here."
