Last year I watched a documentary movie about Chernobyl. There was a group of scientists sedating wild animals and checking their radiation levels. From a chopper they took down a boar. AFAIR the level of radiation absorbed was 800 times higher than normal (since some kind of radiation is everywhere etc.), but no cell mutation occurred. They tested plants and other animals. Same story. Nothing changed. No mutants. Who about this huh?
The only mutations observed occurred shortly after the accident. There were some disfigured cows born plus a couple of handicapped children. That's it.
So in the end the lockdown is much more a preventive sanitary thing. Note that another reactor (reactors?) is still operational and there are people mantaining it.
Also, AFAIR there was a project to replace the old sarcophagus with some fancy advanced construction (supposed to be financed by the EU or something) ensuing that truly nothing goes out this time, but I haven't been following the story.

Ah, yes, in fact, there was this peculiar ZSGer called Chernobyl who...Never mind. I can't be arsed to explain Chernobyl to everyone (considering I never even met the guy!)

Funny too... in a weird sort of way. Dragunov can probably paint a delightful picture of him...

I was just reading the origins of this thread, and wanted to say: It's funny, even though I never went head-over-heels with SoC, and only discovered CoP the other week, me and a good STALKER-obsessed friend of mine (whom I'm attempting to drag into the forums) have been doing "STALKER-like" stuff for three or four years. It started as a lasertag league which kinda fell apart, and evolved into nighttime 'walks' or more accurately put 'semi-armed patrols' along country roads and in other... places at night. Pennsylvania is much more forgiving for the sort of thing than many other places in the country, so we'd take Airsoft weapons and packs with what we'd need for a comfortable overnight, and go for a walk. It'd never actually last overnight, but some of them did last six or seven hours, and we didn't end because we wanted to necessarily. There just wasn't anywhere to take or keep it in the daylight. Curse sensitive people and their being easily weirded out and the habit of police to take their side in everything.
Where could one go to get out of here stalker and do strange things like this? National parks you might be able to get away with it but everything's SO HEAVILY PATROLLED and monitored and regulated and insured out the ass
I think we should organize an expedition to a 3rd-world-country's forest and do it just so we don't end up with criminal records.
And to think, my father used to bring a shotgun to school so he could go hunting afterwards. I'd miss those times if I had the luxury of experiencing them.

Don't say that. I'm known to randomly go places, and be much too well-armed.

Negguhs, come to Bosnia. We have forests and and y'all can chill without the police. Same in Russia. I remember me and my friends in the village I used to spend my summers at (back when I was younger and still lived there) used to have little 'wars' of the sort with kiddie replica BB's. Nothing but countryside all around for miles, forests, giant open fields, you know the deal. Some of these raids lasted for a good part of the day, and we even wanted to pull an all-nighter doing it, but then things just kind of drifted apart. Maybe we'll still try it some day when all of us have the time to go back. But yeah, Eastern Europe gives off that definite stalker vibe like no other place in the world. It's a place where you can truly be alone for as long as you want to be, and just... do whatever it is you please. It's nothing compared to a national park. No police patrols, nothing. You could get mauled by a bear and no one would find you for a week, if there were bears there, anyway. So I definitely do feel for you, Kobura. If I and my friends had known of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. back then, we'd definitely try to pull something of the sort off. It would be easily feasible, day or night, and no one would really see, much less care even if they did. It's crazy how much I miss the place. All that wide open space, it's all very nostalgically Zoney. Too bad I won't be able to go back this year if I want to stay out of the Russian Army.

We have deserts, large boring deserts... Only idiot backpackers go out there.
You can still be S.T.A.L.K.E.R. like in the city, you just need to sneak around, or dressing like a Duty member with 5 other people and cutting the power to a friends house while they were having a party and storming the house... Raids in the suburbs!

We do that, it usually ends in red and blue lights. Fortunately, so far it's "Weird Kids in Camoflage and Airsoft Guns" - 3, Police - 0
We're getting extraordinarily good at being invisible. I even trip over my own people sometimes, it makes me proud.

Nah, police are too dumb over here and they don't creep into the forest.

Nah, police are too dumb over here and they don't creep into the forest. In my little corner of the world, we're up to our eyeballs in military . . . But, portions of our region have a definite Zone feel to them. I keep meaning to take pics of my drive into work, and post them . . . every morning I feel like some fool who decided to get one of those beat-down VAZs running and take it out for a drive . . .

Our region's population is over 50% military (either active, retired or reserve). We have almost 20 bases within a 30km range . . . it's a little ridiculous.
