So last night (and early this morning) while I was playing Stalker SoC, I though to myself "I'd like to try living like a Stalker for a week." After some review (and some sleep) I decided that it would be more or less just like camping but without the usual stuff I bring to amuse myself (PSP, Gameboy, music player, etc.) and I'd have to walk everywhere instead of biking/driving.
I want to know what you guys think of the idea and what you think would be "canon" to bring along in terms of food and amusement (Would books be okay? What kinds of canned food do you think?) Also, do you think I'd even be allowed a tent, or just a sleeping bag?

In terms of food? Prepare for a week of constipation. ;D S.T.A.L.K.E.R.s usually eat dry food, stuff such as luncheon meat or sausages. Oh and bread. About the drinking, that's going to be much more difficult-Energy drinks or vodka, if you're thinking of "going canon" Amusement is also a tough cookie. You can't fish, you can't read much...You could go hunting .

I don't see why there wouldn't be books, you could learn the guitar?. A week of energy drinks and vodka, will leave you feeling very dehydrated. Priboi had fresh water available in it, and a larger selection of food.
Well you could sleep in old houses, seeing as they've been abandoned.

I could sleep in an abandoned house, but that's against the law I think. I have a small tent and a lightweight sleeping bag.

Depends how closely people monitor them? And if there's a fence around them...
But most stalkers a trespassers...

Where exactly were you planning to spend a week in the wildness?

I haven't decided yet. There's a number of places I'd like to give a try. There's some farm fields about a day's walk from my home, but I'm not sure the farmer would take kindly to me hanging out in his fields. I suppose I could go to a national park, but the nearest one is like a week of walking there and back. My mom suggested our backyard, but I don't think that really qualifies.

It is not that large, maybe a half acre. I was looking for something more like The Zone, but I don't think there's anything even close to that where I live.

Yeah that might spoil the illusion a bit.

I know a few places outside my town. But then again, over there I'd probably catch a bullet or fall asleep next to a training charge.

I might try something like this when I go visit the Russian countryside this summer.
It's pretty much the closest you can get to an authentic Zone, minus of course the mutants and anomalies.

Yeah, that's the problem with living in the US. Nothing special about the outdoors. You Russians are lucky.
After giving it more thought (and more playing of Stalker without rushing through areas and trying to be stealthy instead of blowing the living crap out of everything that moves) I decided that I'm really gonna need to plan this. I'll need to find a suitable location and gather the necessary provisions (it would seem that real Stalkers live on a more or less starvation diet.)
That kind of diet leads to a rather nasty constipation. Have you noticed that your character never has to,you know, make peace with the Germans?-Edit by the almighty ruler of migratory herds himself.
